“Worth a visit”
Reviewed November 2, 2013 via mobile

Nice change after a week in Portsmouth to go some where that is free to enter and park! Attracted by the Egypt exhibit, we so enjoyed the Sherlock Holmes/ Arthur Conan Doyle exhibition and the history of Portsmouth. Very reasonable cafe. Good one for a rainy day.

“Pay a visit if you are passing.”
Reviewed October 22, 2013

A small museum, mainly showing items relating to Portsmouth and Southsea, but also a good Sherlock Holmes / Arthur Conan Doyle exhibition. Had a very small cafe and shop.

“Well worth a visit.”
Reviewed October 9, 2013

Great education for the Kids. It's free entry and they are always changing the events/exhibitions. Plenty to see and you will always find something of interest. If you are interested in local history, then you will find a huge variety of literature in the Museum Shop. There is a nice little Cafe if you fancy a light refreshment/snack.
Well done Portsmouth City Council for keeping the entrance and parking free. I am sure more vistors to Portsmouth & Southsea would make the visit to the Museum if they knew it existed!

“Interesting Historical Portsmouth plus bears!”
Reviewed September 13, 2013

Have visited on a number of occasions. this time it was to catch the Toy Bear exhibition. This was very interesting, history of and different manufacturing technics etc being displayed. The remainder of the museum is devoted to the history of Portsmouth which was also very interesting , an art gallery and the author of Sherlock Holmes, Arthur Conan Doyle. There is a small cafe which is incredibly good value for money, outside seating,a shop and changing displays. well worth a visit with free parking on site behind the main building , just give them your registration number on arrival at the counter in the shop.

“New Surprises and City Memories”
Reviewed September 9, 2013

We have visited the Museum on many occasions over the years, but not recently and with a damp day and having noticed external improvements we decided to call in. The initial impression is excellent with a much clearer and less cluttered appearance and a warm greeting from one of the staff who explained the latest exhibits . Apart from the temporary display area on the ground floor there are a number of favourite areas and it seemed they had been refreshed which we appreciated. We love the various room settings through the ages and the History of Portsmouth area set up by the Caravan Gallery team.. We can remember when the Verrechia Ice Cream Parlour was in the Guildhall Square and the mural of Victoria Park proves that it is virtually unchanged. With the Sherlock Holmes exhibits, The Portsmouth Football Club section and interesting local paintings there really is something for all tastes. The Museum is recommended not only for residents who wish to discover more about their city but also for visitors who look to dig deeper into the City.
