Have been coming here for several years now, on average twice a year.
Parts of the museum do not change and other areas are updated regularly.
The fact that it is free is a bonus, however we like to contribute to the museum funds as we leave to help with keeping it running. The shop is also very nice to browse round and a great place to stock up on stationary, Portsmouth and Hampshire history books and lovely trinkets and unusual pieces. They also house a lovely little cafe to stop off for a cuppa and a cake!

Well it's free, so there's not much to complain about really. The exhibits are well presented, but I do not think that the Sherlock Holmes exhibition particularly relates to the City and it does take up around half of the lower floor.

The exhibition about what makes Portsmouth unique is very well done, the gardens are well tended and the building itself is beautiful - well worth a look at prior to entering.

There is a small tea shop within the museum, it's fine, but don't expect your table wiped clean during busy periods!

There was work going on so we could not see all of it. However, most of it was available and it was all very interesting. The houses over time exhibitions were really interesting, as was the Sherlock Holmes room. The art gallery was pretty good too.
I can recommend a trip while in Portsmouth.

Last time I visited this museum was about 7 years ago but thought it was about time to go again. As well as a trip in to the past history of Portsmouth they are currently showing an exhibition of Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes, what a fascinating insight to the writer who was actually a Doctor in the Portsmouth area and his connection to Pompey football club.
The cafe, although small is very good value and all food is cooked to order. Entry is free although a donation was put in the collection box. This museum offers a good day out for everyone.
