“History on our doorstep.”
Reviewed January 20, 2014

We have been to Fort Nelson many many times. IT'S FREE!!!! There is a history of weapons from part of the Iraqi supergun, back through WW2 and hundreds of years further back. I never tire of looking at and reading about all the items on display. There are the tunnels that the kids love running through and when they get tired/fed up then the cafe is very reasonable as well. During the holidays, there are special events held which cost a couple of pounds for the kids to partake in which always appear to be very well attended. The views of the city and harbour are excellent. The only downside is that you really need a car to get there. The website is very good re advertising any events being held there.
Well worth a visit.

It was more interesting than I thought it would be. On the day we went there were birds and displays. Very intersting historically. I would recommend a visit.

“Great Selection of Artillery”

Tough to get to without a car. Plan to take a train from Portsmouth to Portchester, then a 10 gbp cab ride to the armory (each way).

“Brillaint fun - and its free!!!”

This is a superb way of seeing one of the Palmerston forts, in great condition as well as the wonderful Royal Armouries collection of larger artillery pieces. The fort is a maze of tunnels to the various gun positions, with deep magazines to explore.

Exhibits are beautifully presented and if you are interested in guns you will need at least 3 hours for the visit. It is worth visiting just for the interesting fort itself.

For those interested in ephemera the Iraqi super gun is here. The staff are superb and the café good value and quality. In fact this place is great just for a stop off to the café or take the sun on the ramparts. Do try and visit when one of the firing days are staged with staff in period costume and some of the guns fired during the day.

Top spot, a must for all boys from 7 to 90.

“Armoury”
Reviewed January 10, 2014

This is part of the Tower of London Armouries and a great visit if you like cannons etc. During school holidays they have child-friendly interactive days. I've taken my grandchildren there a few times. Lots of activities, tours, demonstrations etc. You could spend a few hours there and there's a cafe.
