“This is just a Travelodge”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 26, 2008

This is essentially a 'Travelodge'. Moreover, at £120 a night it's the most outrageously expensive 'Travelodge' that I've ever stayed in. Had to carry an ironing board up two flights of stairs by myself; no restaurant/room service options; disposable plastic cups and rough old towels in the bathroom, you know the sort of thing.

Stayed here last weekend for 2 nights. The location is good in terms of being close to the bars, shops and historic boats but the hotel itself is only ok. The breakfast is poor with very little choice and a extremely cramp self service area. The rooms basic but comfortable. There is a tea and coffee maker, tv, shower and comfortable bed.

My biggest annoyance was the noise. You not only hear all the drunks coming back to their rooms at between 2 or 3 in the morning you also hear the outside noise from the bars just across the road. I must have been woken up 6 or 7 times on the Friday and Saturday night.

This is good for a hen and stag party but not so perfect for families with young children.

We paid £79 per night per double room (a special rate out of the paper) but I saw the normal room rate to be advised at £200!! This was shown and changed daily at reception. If I had paid £200 I would have been mortified! I suppose its location, location, location!

Let me know if you have any questions

Before moving to Gunwharf, we spent several nights on various occasions during off-season. Apart from or inspite of the excellent location right in the heart of the Gunwharf Quays entertainment and shopping area, rooms are quiet and had a wonderfully comfortable bed. Equipment is pretty much standard for a budget hotel. (Wifi available)
Tthe breakfast buffet is nothing much to write home about, but okay. The price was right, compared to other options in the area.

We have recommended the hotel to friends and business colleagues visiting and nobody has ever found real fault with it.

In conclusion, a business hotel, providing good value for money.

I stayed here with my husband and another couple for one night last weekend. We paid £105 for a double room. The location was superb for the whole Gunwharf quays complex. Eating, shopping, drinking, the Spinnaker tower were all very close. It was also an easy 5minute walk to the Historic dockyard.
Included in the price of the room was 24 hours car parking in the underground car park which would have been £20. We had to pay just £2 for the second day.
We had our bedroom window open all night and there was a bit of noise when the clubs shut and you could clearly hear the trains passing.
I was amazed when in the shower that my husband turned on the sink tap and my shower first went cold then hotter than I had it. I wouldn.t have expected this in a new hotel. It happened to our friends too so it wasn't just our room.
Had lovely firm pillows, comfy mattress and nice weight bedding.
Continental breakfast was ok. It was very crowded and we struggled to get a table but this was 9am on a Sunday. The self service area was small and very congested. There was a good choice of cakes, bread, fruit and cereals.
All in all a good place if you want to be at Gunwharf Quay

We stayed here on the Friday of the August Bank holiday. Our pre-booked room rate deal was £69 inc breakfast and free 24hr parking, I wouldn't have paid anymore for the room as it was basic, the bed comforter was torn and the TV aerial was broken. We were very shocked that the advertised room rate at the hotel was £200 per night and that the internet prices for a double room varied from £85 - £125.
The hotel is based in an excellent location for the Gun Wharf Quays shopping centre and Spinnaker Tower. There are plenty of restaurants to choose from in the shopping centre and these are open until late. There is a land train to Clarence Pier and a beach not too far away.
Had we planned to visit the Isle of Wight this would have been the ideal place to stay as the ferry terminal was just around the corner and the Railway Station was by the hotel too.

The hotel is in the Gunwarf complex, a modern grouping of shops and restaurants centered around the Spinnaker Tower.

Best of all the hotel is steps away from the train station and next to the historic dockyards, Site of the Royal Naval Museum, HMS Victory, the Mary Rose and HMS Warrior. A must see for any history buff.

There was no room safe, but the beds were comfy, the bathroom clean, and the free breakfast fair to good.

For the money, almost 100.00 pounds a night, I would have expected a bit more, but we were only there one night pre-cruise out of Southampton, a 40 minute train ride away.

Suck it up and try not to think of the fact that the room is a tad over priced, everything else is just fine. Still I reduced my rating to three stars because of the extra expense.

Very good location but the rooms are very basic for the money, bar and buffet breakfast only fair. I am sure there must be better hotels in Portsmouth..
