We visited Monks for our golden wedding anniversary, When we arrived they had taken the trouble to arrange a pleasant table for us, appropriately and nicely decorated. The waitress was very, but not over, attentative. We were told there were three items they had run out of when we ordered and after placing the order we were told another item we ordered was not available.
We were also given a choice of pudding, on the house, which was very nice. I'm not sure wether it was to make up for the missing items from the menu or for our anniversary.
However, at the end of the evening we both enjoyed a very nice meal and felt we had been well looked after.

visiting Portsmouth for 4 days found this amazing place on our last evening. We entered Monks the decor is lovely the owners/staff all dressed smartly and very welcoming and friendly. We ordered the Sunday Roasts, 1 Pork and 1 Beef, the food was delicious, can recommend the Strawberry Eton Mess. The service was excellent. We visited on Sunday 27 October approx 5.30.

This is now the third time I have had a Sunday Roast at Monk's and it will definitely not be the last. All the food is freshly cooked with nothing frozen, I have had beef, lamb & pork roasts and all have been superb and full of taste and flavour. The vegetables are wonderfully bright and colourful and cooked al dente, the home made roast potatoes are unbelievably moreish and the meats cooked to perfection (beef & lamb slightly rare, pork belly with a wonderful crispy crackling).

The bar has a friendly and warm atmosphere and the staff are great and seem to be enjoying looking after everyone.

If you are out and about in Old Portsmouth and undecided on where to eat then this is the place for real home cooked food!

Everything on the menu looked good and the dishes we chose were very good. The room we dined in had views over the cathedral.
