We decided to visit The Royal Marines museum in Southsea yesterday as a birthday treat for our son's 9th birthday... And have to say, we had a brilliant day.
The staff were amazing, friendly, knowledgeable and cheerful. The museum exhibits were hands on for the children and beautifully presented...the medal room was awesome.
The children really enjoyed trying on Marine costumes through the ages and handling the guns, under the supervision of one of the guides, who was fantastic with them.
The cafe was very reasonable and again excellent, friendly service...food was good too.
The children loved the assault course outside and spent over an hour playing on it.
We had to sign a consent form in order for children to do the assault course and because the staff noticed it was my son's birthday, they gave him a certificate at the end of the day stating that he had spent his birthday at The Royal Marines Museum...what a lovely unexpected touch.
We felt that this gem of an attraction is very understated, but so worth a visit. It was excellent value at £21.00 for the six of us. The staff should be highly commended for their friendliness and knowledge of a truly amazing institution.

Went with my 7 and 2 year old boys who are still talking about it two days later. The commando fit team were brilliant and we are looking at going back again in the summer holidays with our 11 year old who's gutted he said no to coming. The museum is well laid out and just the right length for younger children, it has some nice hands on items too

Great museum for anyone interested in the history and heritage of the Royal Marines from the regiments inception up to present day Iraq and Afghanistan.Lovely old building and well laid out.I do find some museums to big and become a bit of a slog but this one is big enough to please but small enough to hold your interest without getting bored.Well worth it if in the area.

Fabulous museum in a great building and surroundings. Staff are extremely friendly and helpful and the various themes have been very well thought out and designed. A little out of the way but well worth a visit.

great museum telling the story of the royal marines from when they first formed until the present day, Interesting and reasonable entrance fee, You do have to pay for the car park though which is a bit cheeky when you have to pay an entrance fee also.
