Review of Southsea Castle

Attraction details
Owner description: Built in 1544, the Castle was part of a series of fortifications constructed by Henry VIII around England's coasts to protect the country from invaders. Barely was the work completed when Henry VIII's flagship, the Mary Rose, tragically sank in front of the Castle. During the English Civil War, nearly a century later, the Castle was captured for the only time in its history, by Parliamentarian forces. Over the centuries, Southsea Castle's defences were strengthened so that it could continue to protect Portsmouth. In the 19th Century a tunnel was built to defend the Castle moat. Visitors can still enter the tunnel and see how the Castle would have been defended against invaders. The Castle has had many other uses besides defence. For a while it was a military prison. A lighthouse was built in the 1820s, and is still in use by shipping today. In 1960 the Castle left military service. It was acquired by Portsmouth City Council, which restored the Castle to its 19th century appearance.

“Good - but not amazing”

Not that much to see but worth a quick visit - the kids will love the long tunnels underneath.

The small restaurant is very good and well worth it

“Free day out”

When you live locally it's easy to forget what you have on your doorstep. We live in Southsea and recently decided to check out Southsea Castle, we were surprised to find that there was no entrance fee. The inside is fairly small however hanging from all the walls there are little morsels of information about the castle and why it was constructed. The seaviews from the castle are great in the summer and inside the walls of the castle there is a small café serving warm drinks and snacks.

“small but alot of history”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 22, 2014

this a lovely castle on the edge of the sea, lovely gardens outside and if you walk up the stairs and walk around the top you get a brilliant view from every angle, the long underground walkways can be a bit tricky as not very wide or high,go upstairs and tell you the history of it from build to mary rose to later royals

Very popular destination with walkers. Steeped in history and well kept. Worth a visit as the setting is great.
