Owner description: Built in 1544, the Castle was part of a series of fortifications constructed by Henry VIII around England's coasts to protect the country from invaders. Barely was the work completed when Henry VIII's flagship, the Mary Rose, tragically sank in front of the Castle. During the English Civil War, nearly a century later, the Castle was captured for the only time in its history, by Parliamentarian forces. Over the centuries, Southsea Castle's defences were strengthened so that it could continue to protect Portsmouth. In the 19th Century a tunnel was built to defend the Castle moat. Visitors can still enter the tunnel and see how the Castle would have been defended against invaders. The Castle has had many other uses besides defence. For a while it was a military prison. A lighthouse was built in the 1820s, and is still in use by shipping today. In 1960 the Castle left military service. It was acquired by Portsmouth City Council, which restored the Castle to its 19th century appearance.

this a lovely castle on the edge of the sea, lovely gardens outside and if you walk up the stairs and walk around the top you get a brilliant view from every angle, the long underground walkways can be a bit tricky as not very wide or high,go upstairs and tell you the history of it from build to mary rose to later royals

Very popular destination with walkers. Steeped in history and well kept. Worth a visit as the setting is great.

Just to wander along the foreshore in Southsea and come across the fabulous piece of history is wonderful. Freely available to all and to look through the parapets was a very interesting experience. I can imagine the Mary Rose sinking in the distance

i'm not sure how long Southsea Castle can continue to remain free but it is brilliant fun. I really like how its been well maintained although not a fan of the cafe. Its nice to go upstairs on the battlements and stand on the cannons facing out on the Solent. Southsea Castle is a very small castle but nevertheless very atmospheric. i think it should have late night candlelit openings.

I popped into the Yellow Kite cafe on Sunday and had a fantastic roast! The museum parts are closed for the winter but the cafe and courtyard are open at weekends and the cafe was nice and toasty warm. Really enjoyed a delicious lunch with my two friends who hadn't visited before. It was perfect after a brisk walk along the seafront. Their coffee was great and they also have beer and wine available. Nice, friendly, helpful staff too! Only downside was the Castles toilets were shabby and very chilly!
