Attraction details
Owner description: Built in 1544, the Castle was part of a series of fortifications constructed by Henry VIII around England's coasts to protect the country from invaders. Barely was the work completed when Henry VIII's flagship, the Mary Rose, tragically sank in front of the Castle. During the English Civil War, nearly a century later, the Castle was captured for the only time in its history, by Parliamentarian forces. Over the centuries, Southsea Castle's defences were strengthened so that it could continue to protect Portsmouth. In the 19th Century a tunnel was built to defend the Castle moat. Visitors can still enter the tunnel and see how the Castle would have been defended against invaders. The Castle has had many other uses besides defence. For a while it was a military prison. A lighthouse was built in the 1820s, and is still in use by shipping today. In 1960 the Castle left military service. It was acquired by Portsmouth City Council, which restored the Castle to its 19th century appearance.

Great for kids and anyone else interested in keeping up with Portsmouth's wealth of nautical history. Underground tunnels to explore and interesting info in the museum itself from Henry VIII era to it's use in WWII as a billet for local ATS girls who had to share the basement with the mice! Nice tea rooms and a good way to spend an hour or so, especially on a sunny day sat outside in the centre courtyard.

“A memorable wedding venue”
Reviewed June 23, 2013

Our daughter's wedding reception was held at the castle a week ago, and we were very pleased with the way everything went - apart from the rather windy weather which meant going up to the ramparts was quite an experience!!! (But it didn't rain, and the sun shone.....) Carly and her team worked very hard to ensure that all went smoothly, and all our guests enjoyed the delicious hog roast and tasty salads.

“a day out”

There were plenty to see for free, they let you wander round the castle from ramparts to a underground tunnel. Well worth a visit if you have a afternoon free.
