Owner description: Built in 1544, the Castle was part of a series of fortifications constructed by Henry VIII around England's coasts to protect the country from invaders. Barely was the work completed when Henry VIII's flagship, the Mary Rose, tragically sank in front of the Castle. During the English Civil War, nearly a century later, the Castle was captured for the only time in its history, by Parliamentarian forces. Over the centuries, Southsea Castle's defences were strengthened so that it could continue to protect Portsmouth. In the 19th Century a tunnel was built to defend the Castle moat. Visitors can still enter the tunnel and see how the Castle would have been defended against invaders. The Castle has had many other uses besides defence. For a while it was a military prison. A lighthouse was built in the 1820s, and is still in use by shipping today. In 1960 the Castle left military service. It was acquired by Portsmouth City Council, which restored the Castle to its 19th century appearance.

We were stopping not far from the castle and popped in for an hour when walking along the seafront, admission is free and there is a small museum to look around. There is also a small cafe, but we did not use this. The views from the walls are excellent.

Perfect in every way, from the amazing setting to the very helpful staff. We were able to walk around the castle and ramparts and enjoy the brilliant sea views. Unique in every way.

Very interesting castle which was free to enter. The TV history programme was rather boring but Henry VIII model and cannons etc very informative. Would certainly visit again with grandchildren.

An enjoyable place to spend half an hour if you're walking along the beach. We were staying at the Premier Inn which is just a few minutes walk away. It's not a large castle but they make a good effort to display the rich heritage of the place. If you want to take your time there are quite a few display boards to read and a video to sit and watch. There are also some great views from the top and entry is free.

It's definitely worth visiting if your in the area especially as it's free entry.

We stayed just along the Sea front at the Southsea Premier Inn so it was very handy for us to be able to walk here and learn all about the history of King Henry and the tales of the surrounding area.
