“Fantastic location with a warm welcome waiting for you!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 19, 2010

We stayed in Portsmouth for one night - as normally we try and pack everything in one day, and wanted to be near the Gunwharf. We found Fortitude Cottage by Googling B&Bs in Portsmouth and once we saw the reviews we thought go for it! On arrival Maggie was very welcoming and showed us to the 'Spinnaker View' building right next door to the Fortitude and gave us the ground floor double room - and a small bottle of sparkling wine! The Gunwarf is literally minutes walk away (follow the 'millennium chain walk' that is carved into the pavement) and the sea is right outside the door - we loved watching all the boats coming into the harbour! The comfy bed meant a good-night's sleep and breakfast cooked by Mike was delicious (they appear to have an award for it which we saw in the breakfast room!) Afterwards we strolled along the promenade in the sunshine down to Clarence Pier and enjoyed the sea breeze. Then it was time to go and so bade a fond farewell......but we will definately be returning!

We have stayed in the Fortitude several times and when visiting Portsmouth we try to stay there if at all possible, The rooms are excellent having stayed in several our favourite being the top room with the roof terrace. The views from up there are excellent and nowhere other than the Spinnaker have those such views. Well what can we say about the hosts Mike and Maggie who have become good friends you will not meet anybody better, The breakfasts are excellent also catering to whatever you want to eat. My advice to anyone who wants to visit Portsmouth, stay at the Fortitude but you will have to plan and book early, you won't want to stop anywhere else.

We spent two nights in the double room on the second floor of Fortitude. It was very small, bringing a whole new meaning to "petite" in the context of the ensuite - so small that the basin and towels are in the main room, and you have to open the shower door before you close the ensuite door. With 2 international sized suitcases we had some challenges moving in and out (stairs are narrow and steep with an additional security door 3 stairs up the first flight), and spent a good deal of our time treading carefully around things. That said, the room was pleasant and looked out to the Isle of Wight ferry terminal. The tea and coffee tray was generous, and we were given a small "welcome" bottle of sparkling wine on arrival. The breakfasts were very nice and the dining room an oasis of relative space. Fortitude is very close to the Spinnaker tower as the crow flies, but is a good 10-15 minutes walk around the old port to get there. The local pubs are very good and reasonably priced; Maggie and Mike were very good hosts and there was free wifi with good reception. A previous reviewer has commented on the number of notes/warnings around the room (eg one talking about removing anything wet that is not IN the shower) and I agree, these give the air of being treated like a naughty child - not something one needs when paying 95 pounds a night. Parking is 10 pounds a day in an open air city car park over the road, but you will be given a parking pass.

From the moment that you arrive you know this is something special. Maggie and Mike do everything that they can to make your visit to Portsmouth a memorable one. This is the second visit for us and we hope to make it an annual event. It is of the highest standard that you could get, and better than a lot of hotels. The location of Fortitude Cottage is also a great advantage, you can park your car and then walk to all of the outstandong attractions, from the historic dockyards to the shopping venues and many lovely places to eat and drink. We would have no hesitation in recommending this to our family and friends.

My husband, my mother-in-law and I had a month long trip to England... our first stop was Fortitude Cottage... looking back... this place is in a perfect location to experience English food and local pub fun. Fortitude Cottage is in a GREAT location, has wonderful hosts that provide an amazing breakfast and has the most comfortable bed in all of England.

As an FYI... you will not find a more comfortable bed in all of England in a B&B but be advised that nearly all the best accomodations in England involve steep narrow stairs!

Just got back from a 4 night stay with Mike and Maggie at the Fortitude Cottage, staying in the downstairs room of the building next door (Spinnaker View I think it's called, and is what I will call it here).

We had originally planned to stay in the second floor room of Fortitude as the top floor was taken, but upon our arrival, we were offered the ground floor of Spinnaker View if we wanted it. There were plusses and minuses to this:

Originally, I liked the idea of a wonderful view across the water to Gunwharf Quays and the Spinnaker Tower, but the ground floor room offered nothing but a view of the van parked outside seemingly for days. However it was £5 a night cheaper and the second floor room's "bathroom" was so small, taking care of one's ablutions first thing in the morning would have proved difficult to say the least. Therefore, we decided to go with the ground floor Spinnaker (van) View especially since we didn't plan on spending much time in the room anyway.

The furnishings were smart and easy on the eye, the bed comfortable (an unusual asset in B&Bs these days I think) and the shower was fabulous - a huge walk-in job with superb water pressure. I noted it was also spotlessly clean when we returned to the room after a day in town. I have a feeling Maggie does this herself as only someone who's cleaning her own stuff seems to have this kind of fastitiousness about cleaning.

The aircon in the room was necessary as the windows don't open, but seemed to work when it pleased. Found it spewing out hot air one day for some reason and no amount of twiddling with the controls seemed to do the trick so I just switched it off. Such a small thing though and I didn't think it worth mentioning at the time.

Location is second to none. Smack bang in the middle of Spice Island with 2 pubs within 100 yards and another 300 yards away, you're never far from a refreshing pint. Shame that the corporate monsters who own these places staff them with children who know nothing about storing, pouring or serving the drinks they sell, or keeping their pubs clean for that matter (sorry - I hate sticky tables and stained cutlery), but they were mostly friendly and that counts for something I guess. The only downside with the location is the long walk around the streets to get to Gunwharf Quays and the busier part of town. Normally a nice stroll, but if you've spent the day stomping around the dockyard, the last thing you want is a long walk to the bars and restaurants.

Back to the Fortitude/Spinnaker View - the breakfasts were fabulous. Full English with quality ingredients and cooked well. Endless tea and toast too. Asked for omelette one day instead and it was no problem at all. Maggie and Mike certainly know their customer-care - again, something somewhat missing from a lot of places these days.

People have mentioned noise, and I know we had closed windows, but I noticed very little from our room. The occasional people walking past and the distant chugging of the ferry, but I didn't think it was a problem, and usually I'm the sort of person who leaps out of bed at the slightest sound at home!

I thought £90 a night for Spinnaker View was a tad pricy for a room of it's size and facilities, but as other people have mentioned, you're paying for location here and it doesn't come much better than this. It also includes a 24/7 parking ticket for the car park across the road which, having seen the prices, is worth a small fortune in itself.

The owners of this B&B were amazingly friendly. They gave us great advice on where to go for our first trip to Portsmouth and made a superb full english in the morning! The rooms were modernly done, clean and generally lovely. They even folded up my boyfriend's swimming trunks from off the floor! Quaint, yet professional. If I go to Portsmouth again, I will definitely look for accomodation here. Fantastic trip and my boyfriend refused to leave because he loved how comfy the bed was. Super B&B, highly recommended!
