Owner description: The D-Day Story tells of the people behind the events of D-Day and the Battle of Normandy. It holds over 10,000 items – preserving, researching and acquiring objects to share with the public through exhibitions, workshops and other activities. The museum is fully accredited, meeting nationally agreed standards for UK museums. Following a £5 million transformation project, it has moved from being an military-focused museum to one that tells the personal stories behind the epic day. The museum is also home to the Overlord Embroidery, which tells the story of the operation across 34 hand-stitched panels stretching for a total of 83 metres. The D-Day Story is one of six museums run by Portsmouth Museums, part of Portsmouth City Council. Responsibility for the museums service falls under the remit of the council’s cabinet member for Culture, Leisure and Sport.

I visited this museum with a class and greatly enjoyed the walkthrough portion. I liked seeing the replica scenes and the vehicles as well as little things that were from the war. We also watched the film that they show about D-Day and it was more a compilation of video clips than it was informative. I enjoyed it, but I wanted to learn more about D-Day.

We really enjoyed this musceum. Great dioramas depicting various stages of the conflict. The Tapestry something I have never experienced was fantastic. Even the Cafe had 1940's music playing to provide a bit of atmosphere.

Quite a compliment to the museum at Normandy. Very interesting for all ages and the magnificent Overlord Embroidery should not be missed. It's absolutely amazing.

We visited the museum today as first timers to Portsmouth.
I'd like to give a harsh but fair review.
A negative point was that we had to pay for parking, not the museum's fault but the City council I imagine but then nowadays this is normal.

The museum itself is good but one of those places that you just tend to need time to read all of the information scattered over each wall and display which can be a problem to take in. Sadly there is limited things to view at the price £7 for an adult ticket.
Believe me I would not say a negative point if the price was £4 or £5 but it just felt like too much money for what was there. (you were paying to read the boards)

Having said that if you need something to do in Portsmouth..go down!

An alternative would be the much better 'Royal Armories' in nearby Fareham which is much better with Free entry too.
