“Disappointing stay!”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 25, 2013

Hotel was very nice and we had a lovely room. However there was NO BAR! I booked by telephone and told the receptionist that it was a birthday treat ( 23rd) for my partner and as he likes a pint I specifically asked if there was a bar and was told yes, I was not told it would be closed! We do not stay in hotels with no bar! This very much spoilt our stay as we love to roam an area and come back and forth to a hotel bar for drink, tea/ coffee relax etc etc. We were able to get a drink but had to ask the lady in reception, who got it for us.We didn't feel we could ask her for another so we went out when we didn't really want to. We paid a considerable amount for this stay were not even offered any reduction or compensated at all for wrong information or for the inconvenience.

Also the Wi Fi switched off at 11.30pm...and we were unable to reconnect until the following morning. Is this usual? If so we were not advised of this either!

Unlikely we will book here again as obviously staff are not honest with information when booking so we could not be certain that the next time we would get what we booked for!

Overall: We stayed at the Seacrest the first w/e of June 2013, having booked rather last-minute (just 2 days before). Due to the young ages of our children we needed to book one room altogether which could have been a nightmare. The receptionist managed our expectations very well on the room on the phone beforehand pointing out that it would be very tight with a double, single and cot bed...meaning that when we arrived we were pleasantly surprised rather than disappointed. The situation was great right on the sea front and handy for the aquarium, castle, historic dockyard and old theme park The room was clean and functional and the coffee/tea-making facilities great. The staff were friendly and extremely helpful (even insisting I sat down when I got up to replenish the kids' juice at breakfast), letting us borrow a dvd free of charge and also letting us continue to use the handy nearby parking space for several hours after we checked out.
Facilities & Breakfast:
The lift was extremely handy in getting the luggage plus children up and down given we were on the 3rd flr. The parking was close by. Minor minor issue was that we couldn't seem to connect to the wifi from the room, but no problem from the lobby (where there was also a living room and enormous widescreen tv). Breakfast was superb - great waitress/self service with better than average coffee and a good selection of nicely prepared food, with no quibbles about some of our bespoke requests!. Our kids are reasonably well behaved considering ages but were noisier/messier than the other guests but we were still made to feel very welcome by staff (in particular by the proprietor) and guests (certainly not always the case with youngsters in some hotels!). Beds were adequate, clean and with plenty of towels, shower/bathroom facilities were also fine. Son's snoring extremely annoying but not a lot the hotel could do about that...sell ear plugs downstairs perhaps :-) ?!

Room Tip: Book further in advance than we did

A great hotel with friendly staff. We had a beautiful room with sea view that was spectacular.
We had come away so that I could do a little bit of research and write a few notes for my next children's book in the series Jay-Pea-Eyes aka Junior Private Investigators.
It was a really enjoyable stay for both my wife and I and we would recommend it to anyone.

Room Tip: I recommend the rooms with sea view!

First impressions were good the front of the hotel looked very nice. We had a warm friendly welcome from Ana the general manager . When we arrived they were busy refurbishing the bar but you can still get drinks and sit in the comfortable lounges to enjoy them where you can look out at the gardens across the road. I'm sure when the bar is finished it will be lovely. We had booked a superior room with a sea view and were not disappointed we had a great view of the Solent and were lucky enough to see Ark Royal on her last voyage from Portsmouth to Turkey where she was to be scrapped. The room was very plush and nicely decorated and the bed was very comfortable.

Breakfast was served every morning in the restaurant which had been newly decorated very tastefully. There was a good choice of full English or something lighter, which was always delicious and nicely cooked The service from Andy the waiter couldn't be faulted he was always very friendly and attentive. I'm very glad Kate chose this hotel because wherever we were the staff were always friendly and helpful.

We used the local public transport quite a lot on our weeks stay to get to many places of interest within Portsmouth and Southsea. It was a lovely weeks stay and we will definitely go back ! We would just like to mention this hotel has a lift which was very useful.

Room Tip: That's simple ask for a sea view!

I'm writing this review from our dirty room - where our wifi took half an hour and a member of staff to connect! There is bird poo on the windows with a view out to what one could only call a garbage collection on the windowstill of bird spikes, old soap, old plastic cups, dirt and cigarette butts!

Not to mention inside the room! ... There was hair on the bed and pillows when we arrived and the door has a great big black hand mark from the last people who stayed here. There is also a large stain right next to the lightswitch in the main room. How this was missed when the room was 'cleaned' is beyond me!

The bedhead has a series of 'mystery stains'.... I just don't want to think about it!

Bathroom was also dirty with mould and grime EWWWWW. The heater in thr room was really dusty.

When we booked on the website we were promised a bar and dining room (the main reason we booked) and when we were arived we were told that we would have to walk down to the other end of the street for a meal as it was closed * False advertising if you ask me *

We are traveling with an infant and the last thing i want to do is walk down the street at night for a meal when it's our little one's bedtime.

WARNING: Do NOT stay here.... it is truly unhygenic....

This is the traditional style B and B. Somewhat larger than many. Downstairs sitting rooms very nicely furnished. There is a lift, which was helpful with the luggage. Our room was at the back. Nicely appointed and very clean but small. The bed was very comfortable and pillows good. It is a long walk to the old harbour area, pubs and restaurants but quite pleasant if the weather is good. We were directed to Gun Wharf, which is a new development and not to our taste. We kept walking and found the ferry area and great old pub opposite with fabulous atmosphere and great food. The wifi at the Seacrest did not work in the room but OK in sitting rooms. Everyone was very friendly and the breakfast was very good and beautifully served.

Room Tip: Not room 13

I took my teenage son down to Southsea to watch Coventry play Portsmouth. Rather than stay in the standard Travelodge / Premier Inn, we decided to give one of the family run hotels a try. Easy to find and park. We were early and unfortunately couldn't get into the room all though the owner did try for us. She was very helpful gave us a free pass to park and lots of local tips.

We went over to Rocksby's for breakfast - the food was average, but the service was poor. We wished we had tried the Jolly Sailor across the common which was much more welcoming.

After the match we went back to the hotel. The rooms were lovely, just the ticket, comfortable and clean. Before going out to one of Southsea's well appointed restaurants we had a drink at the bar. The bar it's self is lovely but the beer a tad expensive £3+ for a can of Guinness. Enjoyed the banter with the other Cov fans 2 sets of couples, but won't mention the score.

The breakfast in the morning was fantastic - served in the basement restaurant, complete with open fire. My son did not stop talking about how nice his was.

Overall well worth a break from the chains to stay in this individual well run hotel.
