“Faded Glory with a 70's twist”

Grouopnd floor rooms are old world charm and lift is a nostalgic novelty. A shame tis hotel could not be refurbished it has so much potential. Great position close to ferries and outlet shops good sized carpark and free parking. Bedrooms are a bit 70's had a 2nd floor seafront room which was clean but worn, bed was comfy clean room certainly ok for one or two nights. View out of window superb of HMS Warrior. enjoyed the stay and staff were friendly and breakfast was good. Well heated and cosy I guess front rooms are best bet.

Room Tip: Front rooms high floor

Yes, it is a bit worn around the edges but for me that adds to the character of the place with its own identity . With these type of hotels the most important thing is clean bed and bathroom and I had both. My bed linen was immacuate as was my bathroom. Cooked breakfast was freshly cooked not one of those buffet types were the food is nearly always cold. I found the staff extremely friendly and welcoming. The location is excellent for the harbour, Gunwhard shopping and naval dockyard attractions. If you like a hotel with some character, don't mind the odd creaking etc try Keppels Head. This was my second stay and I will not hesitate to stay again.

Room Tip: The top floor overlooking the harbour great view of boats and HMS Warrior

Yes, I agree with the other negative points in other reviews regarding this old, dirty and decrepit hotel. I have a feeling there never was a 'hey day' for the Keppel, by the time it was finished it was already old fashioned and out io date.
It is very handy for the naval dock yard and the sheets were immaculately clean. The breakfast was wonderful too. I love tinned tomatoes, so that was a bonus. The dining room was acceptable, it does make you think there was a time you could have hired it for a function.
Next to my table was an empty magnum bottle of Dom Perignon champagne. I wonder for what occasion someone chose the Keppel to order one of these.

Top location for the dockyard, HMS Victory etc, Gunwharf shopping and food within a five minute stroll. Car parking next to the Lively Lady pub. Or main train station opposite. Room needs redecorating but so do some peoples houses! How long do you want to spend in a hotel room anyway? Beds comfy so slept like a log. Top view overlooking the harbour (if you ignore the bus terminus opposite) Breakfast was good. Good value for money. If you want marble floors and top quality painted rooms forget staying here. if you want value for money and a great location then this is the one for you. Enjoy!

The hotel certainly needs bringing into the 21st century with a coat of paint and wallpaper. However , the location is probably one of the best in the area. Most of the rooms are enormous, and the breakfast is always good. Another bonus is that the hotel is pet friendly, which suited us.
The trip in the lift is like something from a Hitchcock movie, but hey! it all adds to the charm of the place. You can also get some good deals on the rooms, which is always handy.
If you are after five star luxury, stay away. Somewhere cheap, comfortable and central , this is the place.

Room Tip: Bus station acroos the road can be a tad noisy. Choose a back room.

It's true that this hotel is tired and dated. However, we paid £79 per night for a really brilliant location near the harbour and Gunwharf Quays, so what do people expect?

The room was clean, it overlooked the harbour and the Pinnacle. Bit noisy as on main road, but preferred view rather than being in a quieter back room. Bath itself was clean; plenty of hot water, shower worked fine. Toilet didn't work very well.

The only meal the hotel seems to do is breakfast, which was very good. Well cooked, choose exactly what you want not necessarily sticking to the menu. ~And there are so many places to choose to eat at Gunwharf Quays which is nearly opposite, where you can sit overlooking the harbour, that we wouldn't have eaten at the hotel anyway.

The staff were all very friendly, and the hotel has a free car park (local council parking is £10 per day). All in all, I don't think it's bad value for money at all.

Room Tip: Front rooms have good view; back rooms most likely quieter.

This is a really dilapidated hotel. The carpets are worn and stained, the wallpaper on the staircases and in our room was peeling in places, the bathroom was awful - we expected a shower and all there was was a shower head attached to a rubber hose that we had to attach to the bath taps. It appeared that it had not been redecorated since the 60s (when I was a student in Portsmouth) and the lift belonged to the 50s! - it was an expensive night's stay so was very poor value for money. However, its position was excellent and the breakfast was OK. The staff were polite.
