“Lovely hotel with the most amazing staff!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 29, 2013

We stayed at this hotel over the bank holiday weekend for 3 nights. the staff were extremely courteous and polite, very helpful.. nothing too much for them. I went to the gym at 6am and the gym staff even helped me open the door. the hotel itself was v clean, nicely done and the room was v spacious.
The breakfast was great and i had a meal at the restaurant.. very nice!

We will definitely return!

We stayed here only one night.
The hotel is nice, the lobby looks newly renovated has a basic restaurant where the breakfast is served. I also saw the lunch and dinner menu but we only had breakfast.

The room was very spacious and had everything we needed. Big comfortable bed, working area, coffee and tea maker, iron and what is important for me when I travel - really powerful hair dryer!

The breakafst was very nice, full English buffet but also a la carte options.

The hotel is located a bit away from the seafront and shopping area however it is only 15-20 min walk from port Solent that has a very nice marina and many restaurants.

Stayed for 1 night in Room 705 whilst on shopping and sightseeing trip, had booked a family room and was given a room (605?) that had someone else's suitcases in. The gentleman on the check in desk was not surprised at all and just gave us an alternative room with no apology - very strange!
The room was spacious and clean with very comfortable beds, unfortunately one duvet cover was badly stained (changed willingly by housekeeping) and we were not provided with enough cups or tea/coffee etc.
The room was on the 7th floor and was quiet apart from the fact that it overlooked the pipe/generator area on the roof so there was a constant noise, did not bother me due to the comfort of the bed but kept my husband awake nearly all night. The family rooms all overlook this side of the hotel I was told so may be worth bearing in mind if you prefer a quieter location.
The breakfast was very nice but we had to ask for nearly everything including cereal despite the restaurant area not being busy and comments from other guests suggested that this had been the case for them too. There was no communication from any member of staff at breakfast or check out.
Convenient for Portsmouth, easy 10 minute drive to Historic Dockyard and Gunwharf Keys and there is a Beefeater, KFC, Pizza Hut and Tesco superstore 2 minutes walk away.
To sum up this was an expensive stay that could have been a much more pleasant experience if some customer focus had been included!
I would be very interested in any management comment regarding the suitcases in the room we were allocated?

Dear Guest,

Thank you for staying at our hotel and for your comments on TripAdvisor and on the Marriott system. I have had time to investigate and we apologise for the inconvenience with the left luggage in the first room allocated to you. This room was occupied by a regular guest staying here for a year and normally my reception team would pick this up after his check out to store for the weekend. Unfortunately this was missed, but also our Housekeeping department should have brought this to lost and found. Thank you for ringing this to my attention and we have put systems in place to avoid this in the future. I have passed the other comments to my department heads for their follow up and I wanted to say that we were very busy for breakfast that weekend since the hotel was full on both days and my team was in the process of setting up the restaurant and buffet again after the earlier rush and therefore various items were not replenished quickly enough. We apologise for the inconvenience and we hope to see you again for another visit and you will see this was a one off.
Please let me know by phone your next reservation and we will look after you with a nice large room on the quieter side of the building.

yours sincerely,

BJ Schreuder

I daresay this hotel may have been the finest in Portsmouth in its heyday, but it is showing its age in some places. The lift lobbies, in particular are an interesting throwback to the 80's, but the rooms themselves are comfortable and obviously recently refurbished. Beware if you have an atrium-facing room (a benefit of which will be revealed later); the absence of daylight in the morning will encourage sleeping until late. Because of the hotel's positon on the outskirts of town, they can and do hold you at ransom for everything at a hefty (unreasonable) price. Amongst the most larcenous charges: WiFi GBP15.00per day, GBP7.50 for two disgusting coffees (Starbuck's, what would you expect?) in the bar, and the list goes laughably on. Particularly annoying is the sensorised in room minni-bar, on which there is a sign which states in no uncertain terms: 'do not use for storing personal items. Any moving of items will result in charges to your room,' which I regard as the height of presumption and particularly nasty. Solution: we made our own makeshift cooler with ice and cooling bags to store our perishables from the nearby Tesco and left the minibar and its overpriced contents alone. Now to the aforementioned benefit of staying in an atrium-facing room; the only thing in this hotel that does not come at a hefty charge is the WiFi in the lobby bar. If you have an atrium facing room, your wireless device will pick this up (select Marriott Guest) and you can enjoy its spoils. Other than the comfortable beds, the Marriott Portsmouth is largely forgettable, consummately overpriced and the staff are aloof and indifferent. First and most definitely last stay here.

Dear Guest,

Thank you for staying at our hotel and your detailed feedback. For your information our hotel was completely renovated in 2007 and 2008, whereby all the bedrooms, corridors and floor landings and lobby were updated with modern design.
The liftdoor and entrance doors were not changed since they are in good order. Unfortunately Marriott still charges for internet in the bedrooms, like most global players, but offers highspeed 10MB in the lobby for free.
The hotel offers galery rooms overlooking the Atrium and have triple glazing. They are popular with families and business guests who would like to have a quiet room and a good nights rest.
We do have a limited stock of free standing small fridges and please feel free to ask our reception team, next time your are in Portsmouth.

Hope to see you again soon,

best regards,

BJ Schreuder

The Marriott hotel is our favourite hotel n Portsmouth, it is a spa, swimming pool and gym which caters for all our family needs, whilst leaving me the time to concentrate on my business meetings. The rooms are spacious and the beds are very comfortable. We have stayed in many hotels in Portsmouth and Southsea but none has the wide variety of free facilitates as the Marriott.

We generally do not dine at the hotel, we use the Beefeater restaurant whist is about 100 meters from the hotel. Tesco. KFC etc is about 5 minutes walk from the hotel

The hotel is situated about 5 minutes drive and cost about £10.00 in a taxi to GunWharf

I stayed in this hotel for 2 weeks and had a good time. The rooms are spacious with peaceful surroundings. The staff is friendly and courteous. It is a decent hotel with all modern facilities. But if I have to spend similar amount of money, I would rather prefer Gunwharf Quays (holiday Inn) as the location of this hotel is little too peaceful to my liking when compared to the hustle and bustle of Gunwharf Quays.
