“Excellent Hotel”

We had a 2 night break as we wanted to visit the Historic Dockyard. The hotel is being refurbished outside with scaffolding so my heart sank when I first saw it. However as soon as we entered the hotel we were greeted by lovely professional, friendly staff. Our room as lovely, clean and bright and very modern. We had a room with a double aspect sea view and the view was stunning in the morning sun. The breakfast were among the best we had ever eaten and staff went above and beyond to make us welcome. I can't think of anything bad to say about this hotel. We had a thoroughly lovely weekend there.

Room Tip: As for room 305 - it's beautiful.

Stayed over one night after arriving off ferry from France before flying home to Scotland. Booked two twin rooms with a sea view !
Rooms were massive and very clean and fresh with lovely new carpets. Bathrooms were bit dated with the mixer tap showers not having much force, room 807 in particular had a constant stream running down the back of the shower head rather than out of the head. We paid for room only so can't comment on food.
There is clearly outside renovations taking place with most of the frontage covered in scaffolding and netting. So much for paying extra for a sea view !!! Did mention this to reception who said not all rooms were affected and she could move us... But after 12 hours travelling on a ferry, we couldn't be bothered moving. We weren't offered any other compensation (even a free drink would of been a nice gesture)... especially as there was no mention about the renovations when booking the rooms.
The weather was very warm and sunny and unfortunately the windows in the hotel bedrooms cannot be opened. No air conditioning, just desk fans, which made for a very toasty and airless room. The beds were very comfy though and we did sleep despite the claustrophobic air. Apart from my Daughter who woke in the night to find a man standing at the bottom of her Brother's bed (a ghost), who remained there after she closed her eyes several times before disappearing !!
We mentioned this to the girls on reception who informed us they have lots of guests reporting sightings and feeling someone tuck them into bed!!! The hotel was used as a hospital during the war and apparently these are the ghosts of servicemen, nurses etc from then.
All very spooky !
All in all an ok stay, would recommend if your looking for a clean good priced hotel.... as long as you're not scared of ghosts.

The situation of the hotel is first class but the facade was completely covered in scaffolding and waterproof sheeting. However this, presumably, is a sign of repairs and improvements on the way. Upon entering the hotel a sense of faded elegance was apparent but, hopefully, the current improvements to the exterior will be followed by internal work on the public areas and bedrooms. The staff were all extremely pleasant and helpful. The room was more than adequate for £78-00, of which the government takes £15-60, so for just over £60-00 we enjoyed a spacious room with reasonable facilities. Would stay here again and pay more when rooms modernised.

Room Tip: Avoid rooms looking out on to pipework, ducting and other mechanical horrors.

The hotel needed some attention on the outside, hence the scaffolding, but the inside was clean and presentable. The room we were given was at the front of the hotel and had a sea view. The room was much larger than we were expecting and had a large and comfortable bed. All furnishings appeared to be new and the room could not be faulted (the bathroom door was a little sticky, but that was all). The staff were generally helpful and polite and the food was a very good standard (we only ate in the hotel at breakfast). A particular mention for the staff at breakfast, who were very helpful and friendly, which is not that common in what was a busy hotel.

Stayed here for a quick weekend break. Was slightly peturbed to see all the scaffolding on the outside and struggled parking my almost new car in the extremely tight car park but they were the only downsides. Inside the rooms were comfy, the decor good and there was a pleasant bar / reception area. The staff were all very helpful and polite. Would return again once the scafolding has gone but would not pay the rack rate (bargain via late rooms).

On arrival disappointed to find front of hotel covered with scaffolding for redecoration. Disabled lift not working and an unsightly steep metal ramp covering most of the entrance steps making it difficult for healthy bodied people to enter withour tripping over it. Had booked what was supposedly a premium room with sea view but was given a back room. On complaint searoom apparently not gauranteed but an appropriate discount was given as 'hotel full'. Metal ramp was slippery-with normal shoes- when pushing up a wheel chair - at 70 not recommended.
Staff were very pleasant and hotel inside was nice. Our room was better than my friends room but the bed was a small double very uncomfortable with my feet sticking out the bottom. Reception told us the beds were all new- very doubtful for our room. The restaurant was good the food excellent and service exceptional. Will actually return to the hotel as the staff and food are so good. Hoping the bed was an exception and has since been dumped..

Room Tip: Seaview rooms appear better but are now £15 supplement.

Thank you for your comments and the compliments for the staff, food and service. On the day of your arrival our main lift which also serves as an accessible entrance was put out of action due to water ingress through the main shaft this creating the need for a temporary ramp and I totally agree that it is a nuisance, with regard your room please contact me should you decide to visit us again when I will ensure your request for a seaview room is taken care off, Chris Gilmore GM

Having used this hotel for business lately I found the hotel to be quite basic but functionally sound. Rooms are a bit tired and in need of some tlc although fairly comfortable. The bar and dining room offer a nice view of Southsea Pier. Parking can be a bit of a nightmare with a rather small car park available with on street parking required if this is full.
