“Great views - poor food”
Reviewed January 1, 2008

I have stayed here twice in the last two years. It really has charm to it. The rooms are very large and most have great sea views. We didnt experience noise and we all got a good nights sleep - It may be luck of the draw though !!

The only down side to our stay was the over priced food that was below standard in the restaurant. If you like grit in your spinach you will love it. Sevice is ok but not great in the restaurant. Breakfast was fine.

I may well stay here again in the future but I will definatly eat out.

If you are after a beach front hotel that has an old english charm to it - try it out. I just hope you dont book at the same time as a function of some sort.

My partner and I stayed 2 nights at this delighful hotel. We had never stayed at this hotel before and we had booked the first night through a promotion(i.e Nectar points). As we couldn't use my Nectar points for a second night, I directly contacted the hotel who very kindly gave us the second night at the promotional rate.
First impressions from the outside gave the feeling of old fashioned grandeur, it was directly opposite the pier so it was in a lovely location. The interior of the hotel was a bit on the old fashioned side but we were very surprised when we got to our room as it was lovely , light, spacious and furnished to a modern standard. The bathroom was very light and long. Although the grouting could have done with a bit of bleaching. Nevetheless, it was extremely acceptable and it was nice having natural light instead of bathrooms with no natural light. The breakfast was nice and the waiting staff were attentive. We ran out of some tea and coffee supplies and the reception staff kindly stocked us up with as many of the supplies required. On reading some of the material in the bedroom, I gather the hotel (part of the BEST WESTERN HOTEL chain) are gradually refurbishing the hotel so I should imagine it will be a very popular hotel when these changes have taken place. The only downside is the car parking which is quite restricted as there isn't much room in the hotel car park. However, we were very lucky to find a quiet spot on a side street next to the hotel and we could even keep an eye on the car from our bedroom window. The stay was very enjoyable as it was a lovely base to visit family. We would certainly stay there again.

We got this hotel for very cheap so were very surprised with what we got. The rooms are very spacious with a big bathroom. We had no problem with noise and had an excellent sea view. Would recommend this hotel to anybody and will be back!

My wife and I went with our 5 month old baby to stay at the Royal Beach for a couple of nights in Nov 06.

Good points:
Excellent large room with sea view, clean and modern decor. Bathroom a decent size, complimentary razor, toothbrush, toothpaste and vanity kit was a nice touch. Staff helpful and polite and all times. No noise at all from surrounding area (probably due to the time of year). Excellent food in restaurant for evening meal and breakfast. Equally good food in lounge bar for more informal dining. No problems with taking baby into restaurant or lounge.

Minor Gripes:
Large bed was really 2 single beds pushed together but with king size sheets etc. Hotel is child-friendly, but had to climb steps to get from car-park to reception, and also to get out the front of the hotel - not easy with pushchair. Non-smoking section should be more separate in bar (although this will change in summer 07 with new laws). Main lift in hotel a tight squeeze, reception area decor a bit dated in places, but not unattractive (considering the age of the hotel). Arrived at 3pm to check in but had to wait 30 mins until room was ready. We had a non-smoking room, but were confused to see an ashtray in the room! Although the quality was great the food prices were a bit steep (£14-£15 main course in restaurant, £5-£6 for a sandwich in the bar)

Overall it was a very pleasant stay, the gripes I've listed above may seem a lot, but they did not spoil our stay. The hotel has a lot of character, but to be honest we will probably go to a premier travel inn for our next break with the baby, saving about £100 over the 2 days and having a proper smoke-free, child-friendly restaurant on-site.

We booked a 3 night weekend break here at the end of July. On arrival on the Friday afternoon, whilst checking in I happened to notice that they were preparing for a function of some sort.

Once all the necessary forms were signed, we were told that our seaview room was on the first floor. At this point I asked what the function might be, as no mention was made during the checking in. We were told that there would a wedding disco immediately under our room. I asked if we could be moved and the staff helpfully found us room, also overlooking the sea, on the third floor but still immediately above the function room.

We went out for the evening, but on returning found the disco in full swing. Sleep was impossible, even this high up, as the furniture was literally shaking. We checked with reception how long the "do" would go on and were told it would finish at 1am. We also found out that they were having another disco the following night until 2 am.

I must say that the staff were thoroughly pleasant throughout and did all they could to help us, but as I had just come out of hospital I felt I couldn't stand another night of noise, so we checked out after breakfast next morning.

The previous comments about the outside noise are correct. There are several clubs nearby and the taxi's congregate opposite the hotel at chucking out time (2am-ish). Early mornings are disturbed by the street sweeper and staff emptying the previous nights bottles into wheely bins.

Other than that, the breakfast was nothing to write home about. When we stayed it was taken in a dismal function room at the back of the hotel that had all of the ambience of a prison dining hall.

It is such a shame we had a bad experience because this hotel has such a lovely location - the views across the Solent are wonderful!

Where to start....we were on holiday with our two small children during the heatwave in England. When we arrived at the hotel we were given a family room on the 4th floor - after carrying our luggage up to the room, we found the large windows that opened higher than my head - to also be sill level with the chest of our 2 year old! It made me nauseous so we asked for a change.

We were given a very lovely sea front room on the second floor. It was very clean and comfy. However, there was never any hot water. It wasn't even luke warm - you might say tepid to freezing. We boiled water in the tea kettle to get enough to make a shallow bath and then all have a turn - not bad if you are camping - but not great if you're paying a lot of money for a room.

Sunday morning when everyone was sleeping in - we did have luke warm!

Our room was right above the bar which was quite noisy until closing time. On the Friday evening, this was a bit later, and then a variety of scenes unfolded during the rest of the night as the party goers, tourists, locals, teens/college students - basically all drunk started to return home or somewhere for the evening. So you were able to hear any sort of selection of happy noises, shouting, fights, vomiting, etc. My favorite was the hour from 3:30am - 4:30am with four intoxicated young foreign men - one friend needed to vomit, and the rest were imitating him and trying to take his picture.

The Saturday night hosted a wedding reception downstairs inside that was so loud you'd think you were outside the door - my husband and I laid in bed playing 'name that tune of the 80's'.

However, it was the summer and windows had to be open and it is the sea front and folks are having a good time - so take it in stride.

Reception staff were very accomodating - other than the hot water. Dining room staff were nice, but not very well organized. The dining room really needed a maitre de to organize large groups etc for meals.

Over all - it's a comfortable place to stay - I highly recommend colder months when the windows can be closed and avoid school holidays.

I stayed here over-night for a friends wedding and thought the rooms were going to a bit shabby (as from other reviewers) however I was really impressed with the standard double room we had, the bathroom was huge, very clean and and modern, looked like it had recently been re-furbed, so no complaints at all. I have seen some people mention the clubs etc......yes being on the seafront of course there are going to be pubs & entertainment, however there is not a club right next door as one person wrote, there is a road which seperates the hotel from this area and generally you should not notice too much (OK a Fri/Sat might be a little worse obviously) but I did not hear any noise at all. You would definately NOT hear any music from the clubs because they really aren't close enough at all so that really is a far-fetched comment!! Overall there is nothing wrong with this hotel, if the other people who have written bad reviews want a perfect seafront hotel they should go stay somewhere other than Portsmouth - its hardly Marbella is it ?!! :)
