“A hidden gem”
Reviewed October 26, 2013

Been here twice for after-work meals with colleagues and both times the food has been excellent, service was good and the selection of drinks also very good. It's quite compact and can imagine it being tight for very large parties but for ours (8 people) it was fine.

“Warm ambience but you need to book ahead”
Reviewed October 20, 2013

We were staying in Portsmouth to see the Historic Dockyard and in particular the Mary Rose, so we asked the advice of the hotel owner who recommended this pub-restaurant; we were not disappointed ! However, it was extremely full on a Thursday evening and we were very lucky to get the last table, so I would advise you to book ahead.
The service was efficient and the food was really good. The atmosphere was excellent, as you might expect in a full pub-restaurant. Overall a very good evening and we would go back the next time we find ourselves in Portsmouth.

“Huge Plaice!”
Reviewed October 20, 2013

A great fishy Friday with a mackerel starter and freshly caught plaice for main course. The plaice was enormous and took up most the plate and left very little room for the accompaniments. Washed this down with a chardonnay gewürztraminer which I hadn't tried before and after a sample decided it was perfect for the meal. The only down side is the use of plastic bag type wine coolers instead of the zinc buckets they used to use.

The restaurant is usually very busy so it's best to book beforehand.

“Excellent food and ambience”
Reviewed October 19, 2013 via mobile

Went here tonight for a spontaneous meal, and was not disappointed after reading previous reviews. Lovely flavour combinations and excellent wine. I had the Serrano wrapped pork sirloin mad my partner had the steak, both were amazing! The pork came with a silky risotto and al dente broccoli. I couldn't resist a dessert so chose the Eton mess which had crisp and chewy meriengue with berries and cream, amazing! The staff were friendly and attentive and the atmosphere was lovely and relaxing. Definitely recommended!

“Delightful food and perfect for a special occasion”
Reviewed October 9, 2013

One of our best local restaurant/bars. We went there last Saturday for a special occasion and once again the food was delightful - try the Buckwells steak. Also a couple of lovely real ales and a nice pub feel around the bar. Highly recommended.
