“Very Enjoyable B&B”
Reviewed December 14, 2013

This pretty Georgian House is well located for the historic Portsmouth Dockyard and the town centre. Your hosts are charming and very friendly - an enjoyable experience. My wife and I stayed for one night in mid December 2013.

We stayed in this wonderful b & b and enjoyed every moment. As we are members of The Nelson Society we were delighted to meet the owners who were incredibly welcoming and had time to speak with us about Nelson and the Napoleonic wars, and Alex is so knowledgeable that it was a joy and a privilege to hear what he had to say, and the marvellous house has so many artifacts including a replica of Nelson's dress uniform. We could have stayed for ever admiring the beautiful house and listening to Alex and Finni, but after a wonderful night's sleep in a beautiful bedroom and a breakfast second to none, we had to say our goodbyes, but will look forward to another stay in the future.

Room Tip: We stayed in a double bedded room which looked out to the Cathedral, and was quiet, comforfable and...

We stayed in the 2 rooms of this b&b, and found the rooms comfortable and pretty. The street facing room was a bit noisy at night with revellers returning from pubs, but the back room was quieter. It was a prime location for walking to the Historic Dockyard and Gunwharf Quays. Parking was tricky, and even though they provide you with a parking permit, getting a parking space nearby can be tough. Having said that we were lucky to get one right outside! The hosts are wonderfully enthusiastic about the area and its' history, and breakfast was a feast.

Lombard House was built in 1600 and the owners have lovingly restored its original features. The owners are friendly without being intrusive and hugely knowledgeable about Portsmouth, its history, and Nelson in particular. Every room is like a fascinating museum, and the bedrooms themselves are very well decorated with comfortable beds, tea, coffee, tv etc and en suite. The breakfast is huge and of high quality from fruit to and enormous cooked breakfast - you won't need lunch! The location is ideal for historic Portsmouth and all the restaurants as well as port activities and the Boatability course, which we were on.

Lombard House is a B&B dating from the 17th century with enormous character. It has just two rooms; ours had a double and a single bed and was beautifully decorated and spotlessly clean. The owners were incredibly welcoming and we felt like house guests more than customers -- though not in the sense of feeling intrusive that one sometimes gets in B&B's. Breakfast was an experience -- in a room with a naval sword above the table and full of other artifacts including a replica of Nelson's dress uniform. The food was very high quality but slightly unusual and not to everyone's taste -- apricot juice rather than orange juice for example. As other reviewers have commented, Alex is a fount of historical knowledge and loves to discuss the Napoleonic era. A few words of warning. There are quite a few stairs: rooms on the second floor and breakfast in the basement -- might be difficult for some. And not suitable for younger children because there are so many expensive nick nacks. Also no locks on the room doors. But we thoroughly enjoyed our stay, and the location is great: 10-15 min walk to the historic dockyard, with the massive gunwharf keys shopping/restaurant complex 5-10 min away.

This place was utterly charming--a lot like staying in a museum or in a spare room of someone's lovely home. The owners are not only history buffs, but Alex plays Lord Nelson in historic reenactments, and knows absolutely everything there is to know about Nelson and British history. Talking with him and his charming wife were worth the price of admission! The room itself was a little quirky in a good way, and the entire place is filled with artifacts and treasures. His costume, historically accurate down to the stitching, is on display in the breakfast room. Alex made breakfast for everyone himself, and he served up quite a banquet--enough for a small army, and all of it fabulous. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay in the Lombard House. Plus the location was excellent--just a short walk to all the attractions in Portsmouth, including a very fine pub on the water recommended by our hosts.

Room Tip: There is no elevator, and it was quite a hike all the way to the top floor to our room. A room on a...

My husband and I stayed at Lombard House B&B for two nights. Car parking was easy-peasy thanks to landlord Alex issuing parking permits. Everything spotessly clean, comfortable and cosy. Wonderful friendly welcome, nothing too much trouble. If you like history this is the place for you with lots of artefacts of byegone days. Breakfast a mini banquet. Try it.
