“Simple but nice”
Reviewed August 16, 2013

We stayed in the cottage behind the pub, it was clean and nicely done. The floor upstairs creaked and was apparently inhabited by insomniacs. But the location was great. We had breakfast in a cafe a couple hundred yards down the road. We used taxis to get about, all very quick and cheap. Back to te hotel - friendly staff, nice room. You get what gou pay for and we knew the price didn't include breakfast. Tea and coffee making facilities in room

Room Tip: The cottage was modern and clean but had creaky floors for those light sleepers. Iys an old building

I booked tickets to see Micky Flanagan as a surprise for my boyf for valentines day.... All the London dates were end of 2013 & I wanted it to be around valentines day.... So when I saw the Portsmouth show was on a weekend, I thought why not make a weekend of it.... I booked it via booking .com & the reviews for this place that was reasonably priced around the budget I wanted to spend.... We're good, so I booked it....

When we got there it was a little delight.... Went into pub to announce our arrival, the street outside is very busy & initially I was disappointed that it was all pay & display.... But the guy on reception gave us a permit to put in window screen to show we was a guest, so that was free.... We then walked thru pub out onto a cobbled courtyard out the back.... Situated behind was a really cute little cottage, with iron fencing around it..... This cottage is The sort u imagine in the country, the ones u draw when you are little with door in middle with 4 windows, 2 either side of door & above.....basically this cottage was split into 4 Bedsit type rooms... Our was top of the stairs.... Opening the door we was standing in a newly decorated modern room, neutral colours with a splash of colours this was plum.... In the curtains, cushions on bed & a wall art canvas..... Nice big bed.... Decent size flat screen tv on wall.... Tea & coffee making facilities on the chest of drawers..... There was a second room that also slept 2 more people & a bathroom with shower.... Tasteful decorated, modern looking neutral tiles with chrome accessories.....
Honestly this standard at £50..... We were really impressed......

The cab ride to the gunwhalf quays was something ridiculous like £3 or £4 which is like a starting price in London just to get in ..... I was less than 5 minutes..... Here you can eat a a massive amount of restuarants.... They're clubs & of course the outlet shopping....

Even though this is just behind the pub, we heard nothing.....

Would definitely recommend this place.....was really clean & staff were friendly & happy to offer advice etc

Located in Old Portsmouth, a really lovely area.
Easy walk to seafront and to Historic Harbour.
Room modern and fresh; food was excellent.
The staff were friendly and helpful. We needed to borrow a mobile charger and they were able to oblige with no fuss.
We paid £8.50 each for a fantastic breakfast; highly recommended, worth every penny.
A great bargain and a place we will certainly return to.

Room Tip: We were in the 'cottage' annex at the rear of the pub which was charming.

We stayed here for 1 night and just loved it. The room was small but had everything we needed. It was very cosy and clean. We found the staff to be extremely friendly and welcoming, they definitely made our visit for us and went out of their way to make us feel comfortable. Upon arrival we arrived to a rather busy pub which instantly concerned us given that the rooms were above. However, as soon we went upstairs we left the noise and were greeted by calm and quiet and had no issues at all about noise levels (particularly good as we were at the front near the road!). Definitely recommend this place, it’s basic but perfect for a 1 night whistle stop… Make sure you get the breakfast, it’s scrummy and the chef is the epitome of friendly.

Room Tip: Perfect place to stay for a 1 night stop

I stayed here with my husband and 4 friends. They have a cottage to the rear of the pub with 4 rooms of which we had 3. The rooms are decorated very nicely and are very clean .The room we had had a double bed and a separate room with a sinle bed. The only negative I had with the room it had velux type windows in both bedrooms which had no blinds or anything so it is very light in the morning so I was awake very early. The hotel it self is in a very good position with everything you need with in walking distance. Breakfast is not included in the price of the room but they do serve breakfast in the pub for £6.95 which was very nice.If you are visiting with children it is good to know other than breakfast children are not allowed inside the pub.

Room Tip: Ask for a room in the cottage.

The first time we stayed in Portsmouth we stayed here, in the small 'house' / annexe at the back and it was superb. Great room, good decor, excellent shower. This time we stayed on the top floor of the main pub. The double bed was up against the wall, so it felt cramped and small. The hot water ran out in the morning and I had to take a shower in the shower room on a different floor. Disappointing, this time round.

Room Tip: Choose the annexe rooms at the back of the pub.

I stayed at The Duke Of Buckingham for two nights on business. The price point was good at £60 per night especially for the location. Other places to stay in the area seemed more expensive, and I wasn't going to spend much time in the room anyway.

The rooms are situated on three floors above the pub. On arrival I was given a parking permit allowing me to park for free outside. I was checked in and up to the room. The whole feel of the pub and access areas to the rooms was good. It was clean and tidy.

The room was all that was needed. Modern decoration, flat screen tv, tea & coffee, nice furniture, en suite with shower. Bed was comfortable too. There was an "damage price list" on the table which indicated to me that the owners would like to keep it looking nice.

There should be free wi-fi but this was down for part of my stay.

They do not do breakfast on site, but there is a nice little cafe about 50yds down the road which did a good breakfast.

I did have an evening meal here on both nights of my stay and the food was excellent, service was good, surroundings were comfortable. So all in all a good stay, and one I shall be returning to when next in Portsmouth.

Room Tip: Less stairs to the first floor than the third but a little more background noise.
