Can you say Love, Love, Love, this hotel. I was not sure about it when we driving around trying to find it. I thought my husband was taking us on a wild goose chase and wondering what in the world did he get us into. All that changed the minute we walked through the door. We were greeted at the door, offered a welcome drink while we checked in and I had never felt as welcome at a hotel than I did here. We were shown to our room, which was immaculate, beautifully decorated, and huge. The bathroom was….WOW!!! My husband said he was lucky enough to get the last room, which was the Luella Cherry room that explained the bathroom. It is not every day you can watch a movie while taking a Jacuzzi. Our stay here was comfortable and welcoming, we would definitely come back.

We chose this hotel for a two day business trip in Portsmouth and the Isle of Wight, and it has to be said that this hotel is different. The welcome offer of a glass of wine, beer or tea was very welcome whilst the formalities were dealt with was a nice touch There is a secure parking area and our car was placed in there, and there are extra parking permits for the street which was a nice touch. The room was best described as “quirky”, and Jenny the owner, even described it as such when I mentioned small issues with my room, such as two mains sockets at floor level, quite away from the desk. She explained that this was due to the sunken bath in the room, and electrical regulations, so if you have difficulty in bending, it might be better to choose room 2 rather than room 1. The décor in the room is superb, the wall covering a feature of the room, and free WiFi and movies a pleasant extra. So what about the bacon sandwich? Jenny knew we were leaving early so made sure that fresh bread had been baked that morning for my bacon sandwich. Thick cut crusty fresh bread and thick slices of expertly cooked bacon set me up for the day. I have stayed many times in Southsea in the last 38n years and this is the best hotel I have ever stayed in in the area, going back, probably, but no sunken baths neat time, I want to try room 2.

Room Tip: Room 1 has a sunken bath so if you have limited mobility chose another. There are eight rooms all...

We had booked The Clarence Hotel as the last night of our honeymoon.
We were welcomed with open arms & a friendly smile.
We were offered a complimentary drink on arrival (this was welcomed after the horrendous journey we had), once we had our drink we went to our room which had a lovely kingsize bed, plasma tv, bathrobes, slippers, double jacuzzi bath & tv in the bathroom (it is fun watching a film in the jacuzzi).
After a great nights sleep we went down for a full English breakfast, all freshly cooked to order with a selection of juices, yoghurts, pastries & cereals to keep you going whilst you wait for your cooked breakfast.
The hotel was clean & the service from all the staff was excellent, friendly & always made you felt at home.
We look forward to going back again soon.

Just returned from a one night stay at the clarence to celebrate our 3rd wedding anniversary. We stayed in the Luella Cherry room, chosen primarily for the spa bath with a telly next to it! The whole experience did not disappoint and we had a really lovely time. The room is stunning and impeccably decorated and very clean, as is the bathroom. (loo seat a little uncomfortable, but so what!?) ENORMOUS bed with a telly you can swing out so it can be viewed whilst relaxing on the bed...free movies and internet and chocolates on the pillow :) the bed was a little hard for my tastes, but I have dodgy hips and even my bed at home is uncomfy for me sometimes...husband slept soundly! We utilised the spa bath fully and watched a whole movie whilst luxuriating in it....the speakers hissed a bit which made speech difficult to hear and if you turn the bubbles on you can't hear anything (mentioned this at breakfast the next morning and was thanked for the info and told it would be looked into)....we also nearly drowned in bubbles having put foaming bath stuff in!
Breakfast was delicious and the service was amazing....polite, friendly and helpful, and nothing too much trouble. Would definitly suggest to others and hope to return myself (hint hint husband :D!)

Room Tip: Luella Cherry is worth it for the spa bath!

We stayed here as our son was graduating from Portsmouth University the following day so had two rooms, the Luella Cherry and the Monkey.

We were greeted upon arrival and shown to our room and were offered a welcome drink. The staff were very friendly. There is off-street parking which is probably just enough for the amount of rooms in the hotel.

Both rooms were immaculate and with nice White Company toiletries and comfortable beds. The breakfast the following day was perfect with a good selection that would suit most tastes.

The trip into Gunwharf Quay to eat in the evening is only £6 in a taxi although we would have liked to have gone to the Restaurant 27 just around the corner (highly recommended by Trip Advisor reviewers) was sadly closed on Sunday evening.

It is in a quiet side street and the view of rear of the flats on the opposite side of the street from our room wasn't exactly picturesque but if you ignore this and just enjoy nice walks along the sea front or relax in the the room with the huge selection of complimentary movies you won't go far wrong in booking this hotel.

Room Tip: There was a big difference in price between the Luella Cherry and the Monkey. Even if you went for...

My wife and I ended our two week long vacation in the UK with a one night stay in Portsmouth. We were luckly enough to get the last room in the hotel and during our entire vacation, this by far is the BEST hotel we have stayed in! The staff were warm and friendly and the room was emaculate. From the complimentary drink to check out, we have no complaints! We will definitely stay here again in the future.

Quite an unassuming little hotel in a quiet backwater. First impression was slightly shaky as no reception and we didn't know where to go but from then on everything was great. Lovely room. Beautifully clean. Excellent in room breakfast. Parking right outside. Nothing a problem with the staff. Highly recommended.
