“A True Gem!”
Reviewed September 5, 2011

I was looking for a one night break away with my husband, not too far from home and I came across this great find, The Clarence.

When you first arrive, the street the hotel is located in is a little run down, but once you’re inside, the hotel is beautiful. The staff are genuinely friendly and can’t do enough to make your stay comfortable, one particular front of house staff whom we both found to be friendly and professional was Gemma.

When we arrived at about 11.00 a.m. it probably wasn’t the most convenient time as it was still breakfast, so our arrival was a little disjointed, but once things settled down we were made to feel more than welcome, offered tea/coffee and given lots of information of what to see and do during our stay. After our day exploring, we returned to the hotel and was met by Gemma, who offered us a complimentary glass of wine each and then showed us to our room.

We stayed in the Gold & Bronze room which we loved. The bathroom is upstairs, which felt so cosy and novel and being able to watch TV in the bath was a luxury!

A few minutes walk from the hotel you reach Clarence Esplanade which is a great seafront walk, leading you to Quayside Wharf and the Spinnaker Tower, it’s approximately 2 miles. We got a cab back which cost £3.50. The Quayside is a buzzy, lively place with lots of chain restaurants (Jamie’s is particularly good!) and there are bars and lots of shopping too.

A short 3 minute stroll from the hotel brings you to fantastic fine dining restaurant called Restaurant 27. When I booked my room over the internet, they suggested this restaurant and went ahead and made a booking for me, unfortunately it was full. However, on Saturday late afternoon, I received a call from reception to say there had been a cancellation and did we want to take the booking, that’s service for you! Needless to say we did and dined at the restaurant, it was fabulous and another lovely touch, was receiving a complimentary glass of sparkling wine due to being residents of The Clarence. (See my restaurant review)

Breakfast at The Clarence was fantastic and cooked to perfection. We both really couldn’t fault the hotel, it ticked all the boxes, it was 5 star luxury for a short break away and we will definitely return.

From the minute you arrive at The Clarence you are made to feel special, we were there to celebrate our Anniversary you have the option of extras in your room such as Champagne Chocolates & Flowers(which I was lucky enough to get !) the owners have thought of everything & if they havent we could not find what it was!!Beds are comfortable with nice pillows the bathrooms are modern, we had a sunken bath in our room very nice. The staff were very helpful & freindly especially Louise who was very helpful nothing was too much trouble Gordon needs a mention as well as he entertained us at the bar with good conversation. The breakfast menu had a great choice something for everyone lovely fresh fruit & juices followed by cooked options & bread which was either home made or from a local baker. If you are looking for a relaxed break & want to be pampered then look no further than The Clarence.

Stayed at the Clarence mid August for 2 nights.
The hotel is situated in a residential neighbourhood within walking distance of the sea front and very close to Restaurant 27.
The staff were very accommodating, offering us a welcome drink on arrival.
We were shown up to our room (No 7) on the second floor. The room is very stylish in black, gold and bronze. The bathroom was up a further flight of stairs off the main bedroom. This was also very designer chic with double washbowls which were oblong and narrow in design. There was no overhead shower, but a large deep bath with central faucets and a television set into the wall at the end of the bath.
There were two large bathrobes for our use as well as slippers.
Although there is no restaurant at the hotel, the hotel has compiled a book of all the main restaurants in Portsmouth, each page given over to a particular cuisine ie Indian, Chinese, Fish, Romantic etc. This made it much easier for us to select somewhere to eat. The girl behind the bar (sorry, I can't remember your name) then telephoned the restaurant and booked a table for us. It seemed nothing was too much trouble for them.
The only downside that I found was that the bathroom, whilst definitely having the WOW factor, seemed to offer style over substance. For instance, the washbowls, while looking wsonderfully chic, were totally impractical. The bowls were only about 4 inches deep and so I couldn't get a decent wet shave as I couldn't get enough water to shave properly. The water came out in such a dribble that I had to run the bath half an hour before using it. Also there was no lighting above the bathroom mirror, so I had to shave with the night behind me thus casting a shadow over my face. This was a great pity as everything else, particularly the staff were wonderful. Maybe some of the other bathrooms were different, I don't know..I will still recommend this hotel to anyone staying in Portsmouth as the positive far outweighed the negative.

We stayed in the Follow Your Heart room which was gorgeous. The room had a lovely Victoria and Albert bath with an Aquascreen at the end so we enjoyed watching a movie from the extensive range available with a glass or two of bubbly. The staff were very friendly and attentive and we would most definitely return again. The only minor down point is that there aren't tea and coffee facilities in the room, you need to go downstairs for this.

We stayed for 1 night. Quiet location. Parking was not a problem.

Pleasant welcome. We paid £169 but had a double hot tub in the room which takes a lot of water, The breaakfast was fine. The room was well appointed.

Overall very good but a bit pricey?

Stayed at this charming boutique hotel for one night (August 12th 2011), and it was everything I had hoped it would be. Unobtrusive membersof staff who were helpful, pleasant and eager to offer advice and organise taxis. Enjoyed our complimentary drink upon arrival and were shown our room which was on the top floor. Quiet and comfortable, the only downside was that the bathroom ceiling was extremely low which meant that it was difficult to use the mirror without bending - this aside the little touches like the turndown service and the handmade chocolat made my husband and I feel like valued guests. Breakfast was delightful, with a good choice of freshly prepared dishes - just sorry we couldn't have stayed longer. Would definitely make a reservation again should we return to Portsmouth.
