“Friendly Great Location Nice Decor”
Reviewed July 9, 2012

Stayed there this weekend for a Saturday night, very welcoming and helpful staff, large car park which should be OK for all 9 rooms. This is a premium in the tight streets of Southsea. The furnishing in the room was lovely and the bed very comfy, free Wi-Fi amd tea and coffee making the room was also a reasonable size. The bathroom was a little tight but perfectly OK, the shower was hot and powerful. We had drinks in the bar at lunchtime and these were reasonably priced. As mentioned great location not far from the front, The Pyramids, Kins Theater. The breakfast was continental, cereal, some cold meats, fruits, nuts, yoghurt with toast and croissants. You can pay extra for cooked breakfast and the prices seemed to reflect other establishments in th area. Overall an enjoyable stay with friendly helpful staff.

Last time I stayed here, I was able to write a very positive review. This time, I'm not so positive. The reason? Purely down to the room I was given. I had room number 9 which is about two metres from the front door and, as a result, the room is noisy at times. I didn't appreciate the idiots who came back at 12.30 in the morning and decided to repeatedly ring the doorbell and bang on the door until someone let them in. Also, this room is perhaps the closest to the yard of the backpackers lodge next door. Last time I didn't hear anything from them. This time, sadly, some of them decided to have a long, convivial chat and drink until gone 1 a.m. Of course, they're entitled to do so, but I don't want to be kept awake by them, thanks.

So, simple advice: if you stay at Stattons, ask which number room you have been allocated. If they say number 9, ask for a change!

The only other thing to mention about room number 9 is the ridiculously narrow en suite bathroom. It is literally only as wide as the single shower cubicle. When you're in front of the washbasin, you are squeezed between it and the door. I guess you could always leave the door open to get more room, but should you have to?

Room Tip: Avoid room number 9 at all costs! Or tell them when booking that you don't want the room directl...

We'd booked this as treat for ourselves at the end of our holiday. Clever welcome (office must overlook the car park?), lovely room with all facilities including a bath in room as well as shower in en-suite, service is friendly, there but not obtrusive. Walking distance to restaurants and just staggering distance from pub. Continental breakfast included in price, cooked available at reasonable price. Describes itself as a boutique hotel and it is - I could cheerfully have just stayed luxuriating in the room but for the fact that I was hungry and needed a walk out. A nice touch - if you want to order a takeaway they'll provide plates and cutlery!

I spent four days working in Portsmouth, and wanted a hotel that was an alternative to the usual Holiday Inns etc. That is exactly what I got in Stattons. The hotel is a little bit boutique. Service is friendly, but fairly 'hands off'. Parking is a real advantage in this part of town. Otherwise the location is great for most things: even Gunwharf Quays can be reached in a brisk 20min walk. Handily, there is a good Waitrose 5mins away.

I liked the fact that the included-breakfast is 'Continental'. You pay extra for cooked breakfast - I much prefer this as it encourages me to choose the healthy option!

One minor comment the very pleasant, older woman who covered breakfast in the second half of the week, did all her washing up in the sink in the breakfast room - which was very unrelaxing over breakfast! Couldn't she just carry all the crockery etc, to the kitchen?

Otherwise - very highly recommended. I'd happily stay again.

Room Tip: Rooms on the top floor get a little hot on warm days

I cannot fault this hotel, everything you want and expect from a boutique hotel at a great price. We have recommended Stattons to our friends and they have also loved the friendly welcome and excellent rooms and food. The sort of hotel that you want to just stay in and enjoy rather than go out!

This delightful little hotel near the centre of Portsmouth has well decorated, well maintained rooms and is a short drive from the wonders of the the museums at the naval dock; such as Nelson's Victory and the Warrior and within a kilometre of a good selection of popular restuarents. There are one or two flights of stairs to get to most of the rooms.
Our only complaint was the bed, which was the worst we have ever encounted, unless you like to roll into a V shaped valley. The nice man at reception expressed surprise at this. We find it difficult to imagine it is the first time it has been said.
