“superb again”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 31, 2013

we introduced some friends to this favourite restaurant, and were delighted at their reaction - one of the very best meals they had ever had! and for three courses for four people, including a nice bottle of Malbec, the cost was £67 per couple. stunning value. very friendly front of house as usual.

“5 North Street - Don't bother!”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 29, 2013

All the locals that recommend this place obviously don't get out much! For a Michelin Starred restaurant it was a complete disappointment.
Stuck on a pokey table with no room at all, the food was ok, but not good enough for a Michelin star. Staff were nonplussed and with the personalities of a dead ant.
Oh no, not for me I'm afraid, especially not at these prices.

“Excuisite”

Took my discerning parents for Sunday lunch, and we were "bowled over" by the freindly, unpretentious service, and the most amazing food! My parents think it is the best place they have ever eaten at!
Highly recommended.

“Best in Gloucestershire”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 20, 2013

Came here for lunch yesterday and not disappointed. Food was interesting and well-executed although I think the evening menu would be a little more adventurous. Some of the flavours/textures didn't work perfectly for me but dishes were consistently good and I particularly enjoyed the pheasant with mushy peas and black pudding. Service was very friendly, accommodating and welcoming and perfect for the type of restaurant. The restaurant is along the main village high street (well, North Street actually) and quite small but for me this works perfectly as a cosy and attractive place if not exactly over the top optimism. To my mind, the informality works great in the Cotswolds and the tableware provided by local potters is a nice touch. If you are in the area and looking for a great meal- this would probably be my choice (even above Le Champignon Sauvage which was a little stiff for my taste). Well worth a go.

“Mmm!”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 14, 2013

What a pity. This used to be such a pleasant dining experience.

The "amuse gueule" of Welsh Rarebit pales after half-a-dozen visits. Can they please ring the changes?

Beyond that, the small premises are charming if you are tucked away to the left, close to the fireplace and the loos, away from the front door and the bar/serving area. If, despite having eaten here for 5 years or more, you are condemned to having the draught from the front door and the apologetic shuffling of the wait staff between the bar and your table, don't expect a relaxing evening.

The food has, I think, gone ever so slightly downhill over the past five years. It retains its star but I feel that this is probably inertia on the part of the Michelin inspectors. My present view is that I'd sooner eat at the Wine and Sausage (decent pub food, no pretentions) or the White Lion (ditto) or the Roal Oak at Gretton. True, none offers "fine dining" but I think No5 has lost the plot!
