we visited this little gem of a property,by being members of the historic houses association.
What a way to spend a couple of hours going round an old Elizabethan house, that is still a family home, even better, our guide was the current owner,Mr.David Lowsley-Williams,what an interesting man he is,even with his more mature years,he can still deliver, a very interesting history of the house, interlaced with the occasional amusing story or two.
Visiting times are restricted to certain times of the year, but,is still worth a visit.

Almost a secret, and accessed by a lane that sneaks under a line of trees in the Gloucestershire countryside, Chavenage has been in existence over 400 years - and it shows, for you half expect horses and carriages to be parked up. There is nothing quite like having a family member give you a tour of their historic home. In the case of Chavenage it is done with great pleasure and enthusiasm. The owner's son showed our group round and he couldn't have been more charming and well-informed, so that I hung on to his every word. And what a delightful property this is, with that lived-in feel and no cordons. As a bonus it has beautiful grounds, a private chapel and peace. Cromwell was here but, unlike most places connected with him, he was a guest rather than a wrecker of fine architecture. In his room you can feel the ghosts, whose stories are told convincingly.

We made a point of going here on Sunday. Lovely weather. Obviously a family home . Shown around by the mother and son in relay! Both were enthusiastic and love the challenge that owning such a house throws at them.
They were mines of information about all aspects and kept up a witty and entertaining commentary throughout
Good value and a more personal visit than many .

What a great way to spend an afternoon! The family act as tour guides and are very charismatic! The house is beautiful and full of interesting tales of history. Lark Rise to Candleford and Tess of the Durbevilles were also filmed there which makes it even more interesting if you are a fan. All in all very pleasant.
