Hare and Hounds

Looking to break a return journey from a wedding in Devon we were lucky enough to spot a very good deal for a single night’s stay on Hotel.com. How lucky were we? We arrived just after noon and on enquiring what was checking in time were very pleasantly surprised to find that, as our room was ready, we could check in here and then.

The room we were given (Room 5) was very well appointed and on the front of the hotel but we soon noticed there was a strong “buzzing” sound in the room. There was absolutely no hesitation to change our room when we queried it and we were even more delighted with the next room (Room 18)
We ate in the Jack Hare's Bar area in the evening and found that both the Fayre and the Staff were of top quality.

A good night’s sleep in an exceptionally quiet room (given that it overlooked the main road it was really quite amazingly quiet) was followed by a superb breakfast. We noticed that the hotel had received an award for its breakfasts and it was well justified. The breakfast choice is very wide and is to be thoroughly recommended. Again the service was excellent.

Highly recommended as a base for the Cotswolds and we will return, especially if we can find another Hotels.com saving!!

Stayed one night Dinner, Bed & Breakfast. Rooms comfortable and clean. Dinner was fabulous, the Waiting staff really attentive and good fun. Most enjoyable. Breakfast was good too, Overall the food was outstanding.
Hotel situation is ideal for visiting Highgrove.
Definately will visit again.

Would be perfect if they had a pool and Spa facilities

Room Tip: Front of hotel can be noisy from traffic

The hotel itself is in a beautiful area and is overall quite charming. The bathrooms were modernized but the room itself could use an update. The beds were not overly comfortable and it was not as clean as I would have had liked overall. (A bit dusty)

The shower was a bit strange in that the tub was very elevated making it a bit difficult to climb into and take a shower. The half glass wall in the shower was not overly effective in keeping the water out of the bathroom itself.

I had a room above the front entrance and facing the street- noisy during the day but not too bad at night.

The pub was nice and had a good selection as well as an outdoor seating area. The dining room and other small rooms were elegant and cozy. The service was very good and the staff nice and helpful. I did not care for the food in the dining room.

We ate one night- a five minute taxi ride from the hotel at the priory inn- had great pizza and beer! We had a taxi hailed from the hotel for us and was charged 20 pound for the ride- the locals were appalled at how much they charged and indicated it should have been about 8 pounds round trip.

We stayed here the night of our wedding at a nearby venue (Westonbirt School).
We booked a suit as I used the room to get ready that morning, the suite was spacious and clean. I did get an e-mail from the hotel a few weeks before our stay to advise us that there were weddings on both the nights we were staying and that it might be a little noisy, so I brought ear plugs and slept very well!
Breakfast was included in the room rate and was very tasty.

My only criticism would be that the bathroom light was on a sensor and kept going off, especially when I was in the shower, and I couldn't work out how to change this!

Expensive but worthwhile.

If you're planning to visit Highgrove, you'll probably want somewhere to either have lunch before or dinner afterwards and I can highly recommend the Hare and Hounds for both of these. We stayed the night as well, and it was great. The staff are very welcoming and friendly - they even left a birthday card in my mum's room as I had said we were going for her birthday. And then her dessert came out with a special birthday message on it. How thoughtful.
The 8 course set dinner with wine flight is great value. Don't fill up on afternoon tea though or you won't get through it!

Room Tip: The single rooms are a little plain, but that's often the way with a single room, eh?

Struggling to find anywhere for lunch pre Highgrove and came across the Hare & Hounds. Excellent light lunch in room adjoining the bar - really enjoyed the fish platter at £8.95 - good variety and quality and a good sized portion to boot. All washed down with a sensibly priced glass of rose. Very good service.

Went for a birthday lunch, website mentioned beautiful huge gardens to enjoy. There are...at the back..fabulous, with a small number of benches scattered, but we didn't get to enjoy them. You have to eat at the front by the roadside (busy A road between Bath and Tetbury, not pleasant to sit there at all, you're in what used to be the main carpark) or in the indoor bar seating areas. Massive disappointment and what a waste of lovely huge lawn where people could enjoy lunch or teas away from the traffic.

Super old building with a fabulous trendy refurbishment, didn't hear anything other than eastern european accents working there (seemed incongruous in the very English rural ambience) but service was good, if a tad brusque. Food was decent pub grub, on the pricey side of pub menus (av. £12-14 mains, for example fish and chips or duck confit with sauteed potatoes were both £12.95). Some of the lovely indoor seating areas deserved a menu with more finesse and style.

Not making the most of its grounds at all. The table next to us were first timers too and had hoped to eat in the wonderful gardens which are even advertised on their roadside hoarding..they were as hacked off as us having to be inside on a lovely day, having made a long journey there and not wanting to eat by thundering traffic.
