“A lovely way to spend our anniversary”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 22, 2011

This was our first visit to the Hare and Hounds; we had booked two nights accommodation in the suite located in Silkwood Court. Our plan was to eat in the bar for the Saturday evening and then we had pre-booked a 3-course dinner for the Sunday night. We arrived early evening, the first thing we noticed as we drove in, was a wedding in full swing, but there was enough parking at the rear so that wasn’t a problem. We checked in and the lady from reception guided us personally to our room, she was friendly, chatty and engaging and I mentioned in passing that Sunday was our 1st wedding anniversary. She offered to have our bags take to our room, but we had parked quite close, so we managed by ourselves.

The room was nicely presented, clean, with a large comfy bed, good sized bathroom with a shower and separate bath and being a suite a separate lounge. Plenty of tea and coffee provided, in fact the young lady who came turn down the bed, was keen to give us more if we wanted it. She also left tomorrows weather forecast on the pillow which was a nice touch (apart from it said rain!) If I was determined to be critical, I could say that the television only had the standard 5 channels (well four as one of them had, somewhat bizarrely, got the picture stuck on Rhubarb the dog from the Rhubarb and Custard cartoon). But then if I’d had wanted to spend my time watching TV I’d have stayed at home, so to us that didn’t detract from our weekend.

Once settled in we though it best to head straight to the bar (Jack Hares) and order food as having been to places with a wedding on before, we’ve had long waiting times and struggled to find a table. Although bustling, we had no trouble finding a table and after getting drinks at the bar, we ordered starters and main course from the bar menu. The quality of the food and service was excellent, if it hadn’t been for people wandering about in suits and tailcoats from time to time, you would never have known there was a large wedding going on. The food was lovely, perfectly cooked and seasoned. It was presented beautifully without being pretentious, and the quality and flavours would grace many an expensive high-end restaurants menu.

On the Sunday, unfortunately the weather wasn’t being co-operative, so after a very nice cooked breakfast we had a morning out and about, but decided to return for a late lunch, once again in Jack Hares bar. Having dinner booked for later in the evening, we decided to try the sandwiches, which were once again excellent. Both meals we had in the bar could not be faulted on service or quality, and although you’ll find bar food cheaper in other establishments, I have to say that the value for money when you look at what is presented on your plate is as good as, if not better, that anywhere else we have visited. After lunch we had a stroll around the grounds, we are nicely kept, with two tennis courts at the back, but sadly the weather wasn’t allowing us to spend much time enjoying the garden.

So to the evening, we had booked for 8pm, but we went for a drink in the bar before hand. I mentioned at the bar that we were here for dinner at eight, shortly afterwards they brought complimentary olive and breadsticks along with the restaurant menus to peruse while we enjoyed our drinks.

The restaurant food did not disappoint, as much care is taken with the food for the dining room as it is for the bar. We had booked a three course meal, but between each course was a complimentary extra, all beautifully prepared. I won’t go through each course, but we found everything to be perfectly cooked and presented, with fantastic flavours. The service was excellent, without feeling rushed or slow. I will make mention of the dessert when it came, on my wife’s plate they had piped in chocolate ‘Happy Anniversary’, which considering I only mentioned it in passing on arrival, which to me showed the thought they put into what they do, and it may be a little thing but sometimes these little touches are what can make an evening that extra bit special.

So to summarise my experience of the Hare and Hounds would be to say that every course of every meal was excellent, the staff we helpful, courteous and hardworking and the rooms and grounds were lovely. Will we be back? well my wife wanted to go back the next weekend! So yes we will return and we would happily recommend it, now if they can only find a way of controlling the weather…..

We steayed here on a sunny Friday in May. The room was near the main building, our own front door! We had our dog with us and a basket was provided and dog bowls.
The room had a four poster bed and flat screen tv and tea and coffee making facilities.
Molton Brown Bath accessories.
Dinner in the bar was good as was breakfast in the main dining room.
A pity it was only one night ....I could have stayed a week.!!

Took advantage of the Sublime Sunday offer. As always service excellent. Enjoyed an afternoon sitting in the grounds enjoying the sun (its that yellow thing in the sky that appears every now and then).
Room - Larch - lovely

My daughter got married here the day was the most magical day we could have wished for, everyone who came were so impressed with all aspects of the hotel the food was fantastic and the staff so friendly. we had one major hiccup when my Father was taken ill & had to be rushed to hospital but the way the staff & Penny (the wedding coordinator) helped us through this was second to none.we all would like to thank eveyone for making this day very special & we would have no hesitation in recomending The Hare and Hounds as a fabulous wedding venue.

we were in room 31 a very small Lshaped room with just enough space between the end of the bed and the wall for one person to pass through. the room looked out onto a flat roof and a chimney stack with a large sattelite dish attached to it.there was no drawer space and the only hanging space was in a cupboard in the batroom this had a shelf used to store an extra pillow. It was only possible to watch TV by sitting on the bed. We both had our sleep disturbed by what sounded like the noise from a boiler close by.

Thank you very much for your review posted on 18th August. As with many elderly hotel buildings, sadly, not every room is a good shape or has a pretty view, The room is nicely decorated, with a comfortable bed and pleasant bathroom, and we try to make sure that everyone recieves a high level of care and service during their stay. I do appreciate that for stays of any length a view can be a very important factor. The noise you reported has been investigated, so thank you for your observation.

Following a wonderful evening touring the Highgrove garden it was a great pleasure to finish off the evening with a stay at the Hare and Hounds. The staff were very friendly, welcoming and knowledgeable. Our room was spacious and very tastefully decorated. The grounds were beautifully manicured. My breakfast choice was very special too, smoked trout and scrambled eggs...fantastic! We had booked through bookings.com and had paid a very reasonable price for such a high quality establishment. Well done the Hare and Hounds, you helped to make our visit to Gloucestershire very special.

Getting there is simple, M4 junction 17 get to Tetbury and at the old market building follow the sign for Bath, its about a mile or so along the road and on the right..
Car park is to left and rear of the building, I suggest you leave cases etc in vehicle at this point. To check in at reception you need to go all the way back to the front and right of the building, check in was fast and simple...requested morning papers but none arrived.
We had a room in a seperate block behind the old building, (next to the car park) it was built in about 2006.
We were offered no help with cases but if you need anything I guess you just have to ask, room was large, clean and functional..Bathroom was a fair size and again spotless. Wardrobe contained only 9 fixed hangers so if you have lots to hang up bring your own...a shelf above it that had spare pillows came in useful as there was no drawer space at all... we couldnt understand why there were 5 table units in the room but none with a drawer??
Anyhow, the gardens are lovely and well kept, breakfast is lovely, and as for the restaurant oh wow...I will do a seperate review for that as it was so good...
Very fast FREE Wi-fi gets an extra mark, wish all hotels would do this.
Only downside was the double bed, 2 mattresses fixed together down the middle gave a nasty hard ridge, the mattres was also fairly thin and the springs creaked...not the most comfortable sleep we have ever had. Finally considering its a new ish room was there a TINY television in the room?? it was about a 18 inch flat screen...would have expected a 30+ inch in a room at this star rating... the channels were also very limited.
There was a nice tea and coffee selection, 2 bottles of water, ironing board/iron, and for a change quite a good hair dryer..
There were large bottles of of top quality Molten Brown products in the bathroom which you could purchase if required..this was a nice change from the silly little shampoo bottles.
To summerise points.. excellent food, generally good service, free wifi, lovely area.
dropped marks for...... tiny TV, no drawer space, average sleep quality.
We had a nice stay and look forward to trying out other hotels from the Clasic British Hotels web site..

Room Tip: New unit outside main building

Thank you for your very comprehensive review. I am pleased that you found the quality of the hotel acceptable and the food and service of a good standard. Thank you also for your feedback regarding the shortage of drawer space in your room. This type of review really does help us to see things from the guests point of view.
