“Lots of charm and character in stunning location”
Reviewed September 22, 2013

Stayed Fri/Sat nights. Room was overlooking croquet lawn...very spacious, clean, comfortable, bottled water and flannels provided. Could probably do with a lick of paint but the character and charm of this lovely old building makes up for this. Huge car park. Staff very friendly/helpful. Fantastic breakfast included. Cosy bar with some good real ales. We did not have evening meal there so cannot comment on that. There is a wine warehouse in the car park which is worth loking at as you get 10% discount card from the hotel. Takes about 40 mins to walk into centre of Stroud (steep hill down and unless you are fit/keen walker you might struggle on the way back up !). The farmers' market in Stroud on Saturday morning is a must. One minor annoyance was someone vacuuming outside our room at 8am Sunday morning - not what we wanted to hear.

A good deal. Nice 3 star hotel - could have been a 4 star and I wouldn't have questioned it. Really friendly staff, good service - friendly atmosphere.
Nice room - ask for one facing over the valley if you are in the Country House Rooms. Otherwise you are looking at the car park. Spectacular view from our room no 53.
Visit the ice cream kiosk across the green - yum!
And Bin Ends Wine warehouse in the car park - Very friendly, knowledgeable staff.

For great views walk out the hotel front door turn left and head across the small green on your left to the far corner. This takes you on a route around the top of the hill, so no climbs, but excellent views and plenty of benches to stop and enjoy your surroundings.

Breakfast - good. Dinner in restaurant, good. Bar meals Very good. Well stocked bar, friendly staff. Lovely outside seating if you have the weather. Croquet lawn. Ample parking.

Great walks from the hotel.

Room Tip: As for a room with a view. I booked via Secret Escapes, but then contacted the hotel independently t...

Have been going down to the Cotswolds for years, hiring a cottage for a week and just walking the dogs with my wife and seeing the sights and enjoying the hospitality of a number of pubs, cafes and restaurants. We always go to The Bear after a walk on Rodborough Common, the wine list is good, the beer fresh and the choice of food, both bar and main menu, is large and tasty.
Thoroughly recommend this place - a great wine establishment/shop, better than majestic, next door too!

Stayed for a three night break to relax after 50th brithday celebration back in February! Room was lovely and clean with a huge comfy bed! We had dinner in the restaurant one night and ate in the bar on the other two - food served in both areas was really impressive with a good choice. Breakfast was served in the main restaurant which was exceptional, especially the local sausages!!! Great walks straight from the hotel which due to the rain we didn't venture on as many as we would have liked. Definitely will return hopefully with some better weather. Great hotel, great food and great staff.

We stayed over with friends to celebrate a birthday. My wife phoned before we arrived to ask whether a cake could be made; the chef made a beautiful chocolate cake even though they were extremely busy with a wedding!

The hotel is beautiful, the area tranquil and the rooms clean, comfortable and elegant. My wife was ill and had to stay in bed and the staff were so helpful, taking dinner up to her whilst we ate in the restaurant. We ate dinner and breakfast as part of a deal found on the Internet. The food was excellent and portions perfect.

We would definitely stay there again.

Booked direct with the hotel, arrived early on Saturday morning and booked in without any issues,Sian was very helpful having sorted a query out the previous day by e-mail (incredibly promptly).
Evening meal was arranged in the reading room as we had the dog, table reservation sorted by Martina, good move as the hotel was incredibly busy with a wedding and other guests.
Fantastic walks from outside the front door, great bar and beer, four ales, all well kept and served.
I have to comment on the bar staff, they were incredibly busy but managed to serve politely and efficiently given the number of guests, wedding party etc.
Waitress was also a gem, very polite, great service and we were not forgotten, food was superb, difficult to choose what to have, puddings even more of a dilemma!!! Chocolate fondant or chocolate fondant.
Breakfast was also arranged in the reading room and went without hitch, lovely full english, proper toast and juice, coffee was also good.
Bedroom was impressive, bed the size of a small country, decor good and quiet location.
Will definitely return for walking, beer food and wine, staff went out of their way to assist and are to be commended. Forgot the evening waitresses name but she is a real asset, polite and customer service excellent.
Will return for a winter break proper, also the wine warehouse with bin ends well worth a visit.

We stayed for 2 nights in a superior room on a 2 for 1 deal. The room was absolutely gorgeous although the two sides of the bed were in different time zones! The finish was of high quality. We had dinner both nights from the bar menu & were really impressed with the food quality & the attentiveness of the staff. In addition, our request to store some food in their freezer was readily acceded to. This was our second stay here & we will go back when there's another offer; it's a little pricey for us without offers!
