“Great Wedding Venue”
Reviewed April 25, 2014

We arrived late after a 9 hour drive. Checked in by a very helpful staff member (Kyle) who was also on bar duty. He took us to the room which was very well set out; clean, warm and comfortable. The wedding supper was held the next day in a newly refurbished barn and it was excellent. Again, the staff were very attentive and amenable. Breakfast on both mornings was plentiful and tasty. Overall a very good place to stay.

Room Tip: Like us, best at rear of hotel.

We stayed 2 nights on a living and social deal. The receptionist at booking in was friendly and offered help with our luggage. The room was clean and comfortable. The food was excellent well cooked and well presented. The only negative thing I would say is that the cost of the wine was not placed individually against each wine on the sheet wine list making it appear that the all the wines listed on the sheet was the price listed against house wine. It was a bit of a shock to find the cost was £12 pounds more than appeared. But overall it was an enjoyable stay.

Once again a Living Social deal, and I sometimes feel a little ungrateful making negative comments when we have enjoyed a cheaper deal.
I wonder what prompts a company to set up such deals. If it is purely to generate more income then they are fair game but if, as I suspect, they want to promote their operation then surely they should be doing their utmost to present themselves in the best possible light.
This was not the case with The Fosse Manor.
We were in the Coach House which appears to be a purpose built block between the main hotel and the Barn, a wedding venue.
The approach was littered with fag ends and had not been swept in weeks or months. The room was ok, but a bit shabby. Cobwebs , flaking paint, stained carpet, damaged bed, dirty bathroom, a pretty poor selection of coffee/tea making stuff. One pack of biccies, awful pillows, curtain track hanging off , etc etc.And whoever designed the room should be shot for total incompetence and lack of vision. Go and work somewhere else because a designer you are not.
All we are talking about is attention to detail and some fairly easily managed and cost effective touches which would make all the difference.
The hotel is set in attractive grounds but there are several ornamental trees in pots which are dying through lack of water, the approach is lovely but spoiled through not having been swept in months, the grass needs to be cut, all basics but essentials .
But there are up sides. Yes indeed there are.
2 Young members of staff who seemed to be doing everything when we arrived, and doing it very well indeed. They were reception, bar and waiting staff and probably lots of other things besides. A shame the receptionist on our check out was chewing gum all the time she was dealing with our departure. That really let her colleagues down.
And finally the food. You can overlook all the faults, and there are lots of them, because of the food. Well cooked, beautifully presented, delicious. Such a delight and given all the other downs, not expected at all.
Day 2 not as good as day 1 but still good.
This hotel could be very good indeed. All the requisites are there. It lacks direction, vision and attention to detail. But I'd still go back tomorrow for the food alone.

Room Tip: Give the Coach House a miss

Stayed one night for a wedding couldn't get our room any earlier and had to get ready at a different location. The room was on the ground floor of the new block. We went to bed at 1130pm but could still hear the music from The Barn. The room was ok, the carpet was loose with lots of folds in it, a trip hazard, a noisy extractor in the bathroom and the room was boiling hot, we had to open the French doors to cool it down. Two single beds joined together and very uncomfortable. The Barn for the reception is modern, at odds with the main house and the chairs were quite tatty looking, should have been covered. On the plus side the food was decent for the reception but the service wasn't special. Poured your own wine and staff tried to take half full bottles away. Microphone didn't work so speeches mainly fell on deaf ears!

Me and my other half had stayed a few years back for a weekend which we really enjoyed and with high hopes for more happy memories we went for a lovely little mid week romantic celebration at Fosse and were not dissapointed. They have done some noticable renovations to the main hotel/ bar area since our last visit which have made the bar/ reception space feel much more sensibly set out which i think must have something to do with the new wedding venue they have built next door- didnt go in for a look about but from the outside it looks very snazzy! Being a wednesday there wasnt one on when we stayed so luckily the place wasnt packed out with people celebrating.

Hotel staff were brill. Really friendly front desk staff, and more important for me- knowledgable bar staff with a range of good local ales! Room was warm and well laid out with a powerful shower and a very grand bed. Only had a light supper but it was spot on and the staff were attentive but not invasive and made us feel well looked after throughout

All in all we had a lovely time, and will no doubt be back again :)

having read reviews of the hotel we went with an open mind, as stated in previous reviews the barn was excellent along with the staff, service and the food provided,
The price for the B&B I felt was quite expensive, the room was very dated, tatty, tired and is in need of a good makeover along with the coach house, i would seriously consider alternative accommodation unfortunately we are a captive market! friends of ours stayed in various B&B,s within the stow area and would thoroughly recommend them.
All in all we had a great time at the barn, with many thanks to the staff and the meal provided.
