“Its OK... but not if you're expecting a spa”
Reviewed December 4, 2012

The hotel has a very nice setting, especially as we used it as a base for travelling around the nearby Cotswold villages.

The hotel is nice with three main grand rooms housing a Bar, Lobby Area and Library. There are open fires in both the Bar and Lobby which filled the air with a lovely woody smoke which added to the ambience of the hotel.

The room was nice, as we were told we had been upgraded... unfortunately the room was above something which buzzed away all night (on and off). Wasn't too much of a problem really and we didn't bother trying to change rooms at all.

The food in the restaurant was lovely, as we were booked in for 2 nights dinner. We were a little disappointed that the same menu was used on both nights, as you already knew what the options were.

If you are looking at this hotel for the 'Spa' element... I really wouldn't bother (sorry). We popped down to use the free facilities one afternoon. There is one sauna and one steam room with a shower in between which we had enough of within about 20 minutes. Oh... and 10 points if you can find it first time without asking someone.

Overall, I don't think we can say we were overwhelmed by this hotel stay... but it certainly could have been much worse. Staff are polite, hotel is peaceful and the open log fires are lovely... just forget about the Spa.

Room Tip: Don't go for room 29... to 'buzzy'

I took my parents in law to this hotel as part of the private tour in Cotswolds. When we arrived at the hotel, it was not very clear where the reception was but managed to find a desk where a staff was dealing with checking-out guests. As there was one staff at the desk, we had to wait for a while to check-in. I do not know why but we were provided with rooms in the annex building which was separately but closely located from the main good looking English county house. It was a pity that we could not stay in the main building.

The room in the annex building was very spacious and cozy with everything essential equipped.
We had dinner in the restaurant but the food was not so impressive. Many of the staff were eastern Europeans and their untrained manners slightly ruined our expectation of the Englishness in the country side. There was hardly any element of Cotswolds other than some rabbits running around in the garden.

We were on a special deal from Waitrose magazine so knew we were going to get good value: champagne, chocolates and a fruit bowl in the room as well as dinner and breakfast.
We were staying in the Orangery (in room 50, which has been mentioned as being above the boiler - we didn't find it a problem). Our room was huge, as was the bathroom. Patio doors led onto a terrace with attractive seating. Unfortunately, a bit cold and windy at this time of year to make use of it. The main building has attractive public rooms, with welcoming log fires.
Our dinner in the restaurant was exceptionally good. I was not expecting much of a choice as we were on a special deal, but in fact it was hard to pick as they all sounded delicious. We enjoyed all three courses and received excellent service. Indeed, the staff generally were really friendly and helpful, not at all stuffy, which can be a problem in some hotels.
Our breakfast was also very good, with a wide range of continental options and an ample full English.
We used the sauna which was clean and comfortable with lovely thick towels and robes.
Overall, a lovely base for a Cotswolds trip - highly recommended.

We stayed over onSaturday night in the coach house. The room was huge with an enormous bathroom. A little chilly in the bathroom but very clean and well presented. The staff were friendly and very helpful. If you like roaring fires and a beautiful countryside view this hotel has it all. Our deal included a glass of chambers with a 3course a la meal an upgraded room and a full English breakfast excellent value would definitely stay again

Room Tip: Go for the main house ordinal part of the hotel over looking the back for stunning views and sunset...

Booked 3 nights and stayed in the 'orangery'. Room was clean and the bed was very large and comfortable. No glasses to drink from or brush teeth with in the bathroom but all in all no complaints there. Booked an evening meal for first night and one on our third night for our friends to join us. On the first night after the first 2 courses, which were very good we had a sweet. My wife's sweet was mediocre and basically slapped on the plate so looked a bit messy hence she did not finish it but I had ordered the cheese board and you can't go wrong with that or can you? It really was appalling, Very poor quality cheese and very very small portions not even mouse trap size. the grapes were dull and celery past it's sell by date.Yes I did complain politely and was barraged by a nazi style interigation After we left the restaurant the argument then cascaded into the bar where we were trying to have a quiet drink. This guy is not customer friendly and has no idea how to treat the public. We ended up booking a meal at the Lamb inn at Great Rissington and had an absolutely fantastic meal.

Same weekend every year when Paddy Power meeting is on,first time in a hotel in this area as book a cottage in stow area. Not disappointed from arriving in the hotels reception with the smell of real fire and a smiling face, after giving the bookies at cheltenham some hard earned cash things can only get better, room 61 coach house, just a short walk from the hotel, very clean with a great shower. After such a good breakfast we thought it would be a shame not to try the restaurant one day of our three day break,we were not disappointed, first class service and food.Restaurant manager very good with not being to over the top but kept the wine glass topped up throughout the evening.Stayed in many hotels none are perfect but for a long weekend this was just right

Room Tip: Coach house is nice and quiet away from the hotel

Had a lovely relaxing stay in the "Orangery", which was situated up the drive a little way from the main hotel. Room was very nice, large, clean and modern. Bathroom was also very clean and modern. No water for a shower on the Saturday morning but fine in the evening and on Sunday morning. Only had breakfast in the hotel but it was very nice and the best thing about it according to my husband is that you order your full English and it is then brought to the table rather you having to help yourself like most hotels. Service was excellent and staff were all very friendly and helpful. View from conservatory was beautiful.

Would definitely stay here again and would recommend to friends.

Room Tip: Stay in the Orangery if possible, Large, modern comfy rooms and no noise from the main hotel.
