Number Four at Stow Hotel & Restaurant
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed August 31, 2010

We came looking for a night or two but stayed three.

Just for the record ... we tend to be hard to please and are wary about where we stay. With that as a starting point we have been delighted on all fronts by Number Four. The entire place has been fitted to a very high standard in all areas, rooms, en suites, bar, restaurant and common areas.

We've had great nights sleep here with excellent beds (clean, crisp linen) ... and  the road noise mentioned in another review just isn't an issue. The breakfast is first class and the food at the restaurant ( we dined there twice after long days looking around this beautiful area) is excellent. Location is also very good being about a mile from Stow on the Wold and easy access the key areas of the Cotswolds.

If you traveling from afar and Internet access is important ... and it is to us, then you'll be very happy with the wi fi access it's  great quality in fact the best we've had on this holiday.

Having said all the above the killer punch for this place is the staff. Everyone has been extremely efficient and friendly in all of our dealings. Special thanks to Tricia, Caroline and Ann who have been marvelous and extremely welcoming (thanks for the maps and touring info Ann). But they couldn't do it without their staff ... and every one of them were the type of staff you'd want to meet when you are on holiday - so our rating of the Staff - Sensational.

This will be a place that gets special mention in our stories when we get home and a place we recommend unreservedly

We hope the remainder of your trip was a success and that you had a safe journey back to Australia. Thank you for taking the time to write a wonderful review. We have passed your comments on to the staff which has been much appreciated.
We do hope that sometime in the future we will have the opportunity of welcoming you back to the UK and to Number Four at Stow...perhaps when you bring your daughters on a "world trip"!

With kind regards
Caroline and Patrica Losel

We booked this hotel after looking at reviews on Trip Advisor. It was a great choice! We were touring the Cotswolds for a few days and this hotel's location ensured we were ideally placed to visit the various villages and attractions in the area.

The hotel has been re-furbished and the new owners have furnished everywhere to a very high standard. The rooms are very comfortable, particularly the suties. We stayed in a suite and really enjoyed the bonus of a full size fridge and a separate lounge. Both the bedroom and the lounge have a flatscreen TV with freeview programmes.

The king size beds have separate duvets, which I've encountered previously on the continent. They really work! As far as I could tell, the duvet and pillows used hypo-allergenic materials (not feathers), which means that no geese or ducks were put through any pain for the sake of my good nights sleep!.

The two sisters who run Number Four, Patricia and Caroline, are hands on and part of a family who have a lot of hotel experience - and it shows. The staff are very professional and provide help and advice for local walks and places to eat, if you don't want to eat in the hotel.

We had dinner at Cutlers, which is the hotel's restaurant and would thoroughly recommend it. We are vegetarians and, as well as the vegetarian options on the menu, the chef was very happy to offer other suggestions to ensure we had an interesting and delicious dinner. We were pleased to find that the kitchen uses free range eggs and, where possible, free range, local produce. I can recommend the poached eggs at breakfast... done to a turn!

The restaurant has a really nice atmosphere and everyone was enjoying their food! There's a piano, nice lighting and attentive staff. The restaurant isn't open on Sundays, so the kitchen made us some great sandwiches!

The outside area is nicely furnished, with comfortable chairs. In the warm weather, this is a pleasant area to sit. The hotel has a huge car park and easy parking. The grounds are still being planted up and will look great when finished.

At present the main entrance is not at the 'front' of the hotel, but round the side. I think there may be two entrances, once all the work is complete. If you are travelling up from the south, turn right at the lights, rather than turning into the main road entrance, which is then difficult to reverse out from. The hotel entrace is also the entrance to Cutlers.

The main road didn't cause us any particular noise problems, as there is double glazing. Also, if you are in a suite, the lounge is roadside and, once the door is closed, the bedroom is much quieter.

Last minute decision to visit the Cotswold for the Bank Holiday weekend and as expected spent a good few hours on the telephone a few days before trying to find somewhere to stay that had availability. Clicked onto Tripadvisor and found Number Four thanks to its excellent reviews and I have to say all the positive comments are justly deserved.

We arrived mid afternoon on Friday and were greeted by friendly faces at reception and immediately made to feel welcome. We had booked one of their suites and the standard of decor was excellent ( the entire hotel has recently been refurbished ). The only negative in regards to the rooms I would offer at this stage is that the suites are on the upper floor and invade into the apex of the building, therefore the only windows are Velux style and offer no views of the beautiful Cotswold surrondings. Also as a result of the roof shape they feel slightly small and a little claustraphobic - the standard rooms on the ground floor may therefore actually be a better option. In addition the beds/mattress are very firm and are unfortunately two singles pushed together leading to a very uncomfortable spot on the join - you also get two single duvets as opposed to a double/king duvet. Having said that this would be the ONLY criticism I could make of our entire stay.

We ate in the restaurant on both evenings and the food was superb. Menu was well balanced and had something for all tastes. As per the rest of the hotel the restaurant had recently been fully refurbished and was decorated in a very warm and cosy manner. It did lack a little bit of ambience/atmosphere which we could only put down to the lack of any music ( there was a grand piano in the restaurant so I guess it must be used at some point ). The waiting staff are extremely attentive and very helpful.

All things considered if you're looking for a functional and comfortable base to explore the beauty of The Cotswolds then you can't go far wrong with Number Four. If you're looking for more of a boutique / character hotel like some of the other hotels in the vicinity ( Lords of the Manner in Lower Slaughter, The Close in Tetbury, Washbourne Court in Lower Slaughter ) then it doesn't quite deliver in term of the splendour, room views or location but it really does make up for that in terms of service and good value.

Thank you very much for taking the time to review Number Four. Your positive comments have been passed on to all the staff.
We did alot of research before purchasing our beds, however we are currently looking into a solution to offer a "softer" option for the guests that would prefer this. We also do have larger duvets available on request. Hopefully, you will return to Number Four again soon and please do advise us of your requests.

With kindest regards

We only stayed one night when travelling between the Lake District and Dartmoor, but found it to be a comfortable, well run hotel. The place has been opened quite recently, and is shaping up nicely for anyone wanting to stay in a convenient Cotswolds location. It is modern, clean and well equipped. The staff are friendly and efficient, and the restaurant served good, well prepared food. The owners are very 'hands on' and welcoming. I can certainly recomment it based on our experience.

Arrived to a lovely smiley greeting, was checked in straight away, room was upgraded to suite, we hadn't requested that, it was given just because it was available, nice touch. Breakfast was lovely, couldn't have asked for more, all of staff were very friendly and nothing was too much trouble. We had dinner in Cutlers restaurant on our last night there, it was really delicious, could had eaten a little more though, but all in all an excellent meal.

The hotel, having recently been refurbished, was of a standard you would expect to find at the Mayfair, the Lowry and other classy world city hotels.

The service, from initial reception through to dinner, breakfast and departure was impeccable with each and every member of staff very well polished but with a natural ability to make you welcome and feel at ease and well looked after.

The Rooms:

We were lucky enough to get a mini suite which was perfect. The room was spotless, not just new, but clearly the daily maintenance took care of every minor detail. Not a finger print in sight! The bed was firm but comfortable with 1st rate fine white cotton linen, 5* Hotel standard. Needless to say, a great night's sleep.

Dinner @ Cutlers:

A lovely ambience, great attention to detail and superb food, fine but not pretentious. Worth the visit and sure to be placed in the Michelin guide at some point as it's well worth a trip.

Breakfast:

Served in Cutlers dining room, was exactly as we'd expected, again, simple, well done and top quality produce - a perfect end to our stay at Number 4.

Overall, from booking, special arrangements, the service from all staff, standard of accommodation and food were first class and I'd love to return! (we were invited to bring our baby who I'm sure would be well cared for here!).

Well done.
