“Excellent food and welcoming”
Reviewed September 27, 2013

We dined on a Monday night and the Falcon Inn was very busy - we sat in the comfy bar area as we had not made a reservation.

We only wanted soup, which was absolutely delicious and we felt that the waiting staff were very friendly and helpful, although things could take quite a while to arrive

“Extremely tasty food, well priced for the quality”

Great food, friendly, helpful staff. Well priced for the quality of the food, and good sized portions.

“Good food but not well managed”
Reviewed September 11, 2013

We booked a table for dinner, and the place was busy when we arrived. We were then told that they had a new menu, and the waiting staff apologized in advance for the fact that food was taking a while to come through. This was slightly concerning, but we weren't in a rush, so started looking through the menu and specials board. Unfortunately one of the dishes we from the specials board had run out - surely they could have crossed them off the board when they ran out ? So we placed our revised order, only to be told, just as the starters arrived, that one of the other main courses we had ordered, again from the specials board, was not available. This resulted in yet another round of hasty consultation of menus and boards, before settling on a different meal. To be fair to them, they gave us the more expensive replacement meal for the price of the original, but it was still disappointing to twice be told your meal was not available. All credit to the chef though, the food was excellent. My starter of cauliflower soup was delicious, and the little drizzle o truffle oil really lifted it, and my wife's salad with walnuts, goats cheese and caramelized pears was an intriguing combination.
For the main courses, my salmon was cooked without being over-cooked, my wifes steak was properly seared without over cooking the middle, my son's venison was very tasty (although he felt the blackberry sauce was perhaps a little too sweet) and my daughters chicken and sweetcorn pie was very nicely done. All in all very nice, and washed down with a very pleasant Pinot Grigio.

“Disappointing”
Reviewed September 10, 2013

I chose the Falcon Inn for dinner on a Saturday evening as I love Painswick and had visited the Inn twice before during lunchtime and for an evening drink and thought the ambience looked conducive to a pleasant night out. The Inn was very busy, which was good, but the knock-on effect was that the staff were so fully stretched the service just wasn't up to scratch. We waited some time at the bar before we were even acknowledged, which wasn't a good start, but not a deal breaker. Sadly, the opening glass of Sauvignon Blanc was unpalatable and had to be sent back - more waiting - but the replacement glass when it arrived was okay. The food was pleasant and, when they got to us, the staff were friendly and efficient. However, the rather wobbly start turned into overall disappointment when the not inexpensive bottle of Sancerre, we felt, was just plain mediocre. A better winelist and more staff would probably have made a visit to the Falcoln Inn a more worthwhile experience - and in view of other reviews and the lovely setting, I still think this restaurant is worth a visit. However, with such a huge choice of restaurants in and around the Cotswolds, we won't be rushing back. Shame.

“Painswick restaurant.”
Reviewed August 29, 2013

We liked the Falcon. A friendly, buzzy pub with good range of beers and wines. They were fully booked but managed to find us a table. The food was delicious and the staff were very friendly and efficient. They also do rooms and we wished we'd been staying there instead of elsewhere in Painswick.
