We had booked an early evening meal for 6.00 but by 5.00 were freezing in our boots. We turned up an hour early - no problem to the staff who quickly found us a table.

Decor in the Cafe Rouge chain is beginning to look a little jaded but hey! we didn't go for the wallpaper!

A busy restaurant with tables maybe a little too close for comfort.

It was very noisy and full of late afternoon sales shoppers (we think - lots of Hobbs carrier bags around anyway)

However we were served promptly - starters of pate and a salad with walnuts and blue cheese were delicious.

His fish casserole (Bouillabaise?) was thoroughly enjoyed. My Chicken tagine was very ordinary and somewhat lacking in flavour.

We didn't do desserts but enjoyed a bottle of house red - no complaints there.

The real downside was the coffee - undrinkable and absolutely awful. Come on Cafe Rouge, you're supposed to be French and they know,or should know, how to make a decent coffee .

Still for around £55 we left a lot warmer and we saved some money - by the time we left the shops were all closed!

We called into Cafe Rouge late afternoon an had a wonderful welcome. We weren't rushed in any way and got great food and great service. We were there for about 5 hours - our choice. We had a long gap between our starter and main course just because we wanted a very relaxed, slow meal. Also pleased that the house wine was decent and only £15 a bottle - not bad at all. Thanks for a great eating experience.

Went into town for a spot of 'sales shopping' and popped into Café Rouge for a late lunch (around 2.30pm) and it was still really busy, but they did manage to find us a table. The food was very good and actually swift considering how busy it was! The price is pretty cheap for Cheltenham, although we did only have a 'snack lunch'.

I do, however, feel that the decor is lacking. It has had the same decor for as long as I can remember - the dreadful, my apologies DREADFUL naïve art pictures make it look like a playschool, rather than a French style café. Oh, the fan in the gents sounded as if it was going to expire very soon (diesel engines are quieter). It's a shame about the decor, as the place has a lot going for it - perfect location, good food, good price, good waiters (and waitresses).

I will go back next year (I'm only in Cheltenham for the week) so hopefully we'll see a change or two.

Another trip to Cafe Rouge on a busy day during the post-Xmas sales. Served by the very attentive & humorous Rhys! Service was prompt & attentive. Food good. For a chain restaurant this venue rarely disappoints

Having just read the last review where the reviewer felt unwelcome I had to make an entry, Every time we enter this place we are asked whether we have booked - despite the place usually being empty.

Cafe Rouge is also supposed to be a French style cafe where you have a drink or lunch etc depending on what you want. Today when it was raining we went in for a drink to be asked whether we where here for lunch We said no and mysteriously there we no tables available - we were obviously not profitable enough.

I used to enjoy going to Cafe Rouge's - now it seems to be a struggle. There are plenty of other better places in Cheltenham - I suggest you go there.
