“Lovely night (and incredible veggie club sandwich!)”
Reviewed April 14, 2014

We stayed here for Valentines day and had a really lovely evening.

We arrived early and our room wasn't ready so treated ourselves to cocktails and lunch. Two of the best vegetarian club sandwiches I have ever tasted - the cocktails weren't bad either.
The staff were friendly and helpful and our room was a decent size and really clean.

Unfortunately the entertainment system wasn't working so we couldn't listen to music. One of the hotel staff came up to have a look and declared it was broken and he'd bring up a set of speakers for us to use - the speakers never arrived.... MTV it is then!

We ordered room service, including cocktails and these were brought up to drink whilst we waited for our food - a nice touch. The room service food was OK. The room was quiet and comfortable.

Check out took a while as there were a lot of people checking out at the same time, but overall our stay was pleasant

This was our second visit to the hotel and they need to improve some pretty basic things. Firstly, the hotel itself was uncomfortably warm and we needed the air conditioning on in the room pretty constantly (in early April!). Secondly, the ipod connectivity was not working (it wasn't working on our last visit either) and when we reported it, we were offered a portable 'boom box' to replace the state of the art, multi functional entertainment centre. Thirdly, the breakfast was not as good as I remember. It was presented impressively as if it were freshly cooked when in reality it had obviously been pre-cooked and sitting on a hot plate for quite some time. In addition, the continental choice was extremely limited and not particularly inviting.

The staff however were helpful if not always fully attentive. We did have a cream tea in the lounge which was excellent and the general ambience is very nice with tasteful decor and comfortable surroundings.

Room Tip: Upgrade to superior for more space

This was the first time I had stayed at the Chapter house .I must say I was disappointed as the bedroom facilities fell far short of expectations. We were checked into room 123 , well it is the smallest room I have stayed in in about 25years and I travel 3 days a week ! How they expect two persons to have any comfort in this size of room defeats me I had to go down to the bar to enable my wife to have any room to get changed for the evening .It is obvious that no one from this hotel has spent a night in these rooms or things would not be left as the are .examples .

The shower facility is so narrow you have to stand side on to take a shower .That is if you can squeeze your way into the cubicle in the first place as when you open the door it is up against the WC . The high quality shower gels and shampoo are fitted high on the wall under the shower and are extremely difficult to reach when you do you lose most of it because you then have to bring your hands back under the water - crazy . The door to the bathroom just opens far enough to let you in because of the bed .The full length wardrobe cannot be used as when you open the door it is restricted by the wall mounted TV .There is nowhere that a lady can dry her hair in front of a mirror plugs and mirrors shall never meet ! .On a positive note the staff are friendly and helpful and the bed and linen is comfortable and the ambience of the public areas is very pleasant and location good however I cannot see my self return .

Room Tip: Make sure you get a large room

We stayed in a 'Feature Room' # 111 (unlucky for room numbers as well as cricket) that sadly had staff smoking directly below our window which we wanted open in the evening to cool our room. In the morning I was horrified to see a bucket filled with cigarette ends directly below our window that was right next to a waste cooking oil drum & card store which had a large NO SMOKING sign next to it (see photo View from room 111). I asked to speak to the manager in the morning (Saturday) and was told they would phone me Monday which they did. I was told the problem had been discussed at a H&S meeting the Thursday before and was being dealt with. If that is true, the management knew there were employees smoking in an area deemed as not safe to smoke yet had not put a stop to it. This is how fires happen! I’m glad to say a fire didn’t take place on the one night in our lives we decided to stay at this hotel. Now that would have been really unlucky!
Other minor negatives; English breakfast poor quality plus slow service. Room noisy. Shower suddenly ran VERY hot. Room extract unit made periodic whistling noises like a steam kettle.
Positives; great decor and ambience. Great evening meal. Very comfy bed / bedding. Enormous bath in the room. Great location.

Room Tip: You could choose a room in a different hotel where they follow Health & Safety!

The room was beautiful with a freestanding bath in the room, draped with fabric for extra privacy. The room facilities were accessed through an iPod In the room, with a music library. Great nesspresso coffee machine, free mini bar with soft drinks & beers. Lovely REN toiletries, every little detail thought of. We ordered breakfast in bed which arrived on time and was delicious. Expensive but well worth it for a special night.

I went to the Montpeillier Chapter hotel for meals, but not overnight. One was a Christmas lunch which was quite nice. Twice I had lunch with friends, and the food was nice, but service very slow. I would recommend the cheeseboard for desert, it's a meal in itself. Very good!
Wine was very expensive, about 3cms in a big glass!

Room Tip: I haven't commented on rooms as we did not stay overnight.
