“Beautiful hotel, perfect for a break away from the City”
Reviewed July 4, 2013

Booked this on the 3 nights for the price of 2 deal to celebrate mine and my boyfriend’s joint birthday, we both wanted a 3 day getaway in the country. My mother has stayed here many times and raved about it so thought we would book for our romantic getaway. Overall, it was a lovely experience and very good value for money - except the fine dining & breakfast.

The hotel itself is beautiful and in a great location, 10 minute’s drive away from Cheltenham centre and very close to cute quaint villages. The hotel itself is definitely 5 star, the staff are brilliant, they say hello to you before you have even seen them! We felt very welcome immediately.

We were slightly disappointed at the breakfast on both mornings we had it, price was included in the room cost but I don’t think it was worth £30 – the fruit, yogurt, gluten free toast etc was delicious but the cooked breakfast let it down. It was cold as if it had been lying around, the sausage was not cooked enough and the back bacon was chewy. Shame as the produce seems of great quality and from everything my mother said about it, I was a bit shocked when it arrived. On the day we asked for the bacon and sausages to be well done, it was much better.

We had dinner in the brasserie which was lovely, burger was great and so was the smoked chicken salad which we got as a main. Nice touch of gluten free or ‘normal’ bread on the table. Having heard rave reviews of the fine dining experience, we booked it for diner, only to be told by the manager on the day that they had binned a fridge worth of produce so we couldn’t order any fine dining starter, just mains or desserts. Also that it would be in the brassiere as opposed to the Beaufort dining room. This was very disappointing and although the food was good, £90 was steep considering we didn’t get the whole ‘fine dining’ experience – I had been told by previous guests you get a ladle of soup to start, the Beaufort room is beautiful, the whole experience from getting nibbles beforehand whilst you wait for your table in the Great Hall to dressing up in smart clothes was great etc. Next time we visit we will book the fine dining experience again and hope it’s the real deal. I am a real foodie and the presentation of the dishes was picture perfect, the dishes also delivered on taste.

The room itself was beautiful, just like the hotel it is total luxury. The bathroom is amazing – a roll top bath, his and her sinks, lovely toiletries. The bed was so comfy, the sheets and pillows were soft and I really feel like we got great value for money with the room deal. The evening turndown service is an unexpected surprise, especially the chocolates and water left as a nice touch. The hotel staff go over and above, nothing seems to be a problem and they are so friendly. The facilities are great, the pool would be lovely on a hot day and the grounds are beautiful, we got lots of amazing photos!

Overall, we really enjoyed our stay at Ellenborough Park and will be returning very soon. It’s a shame about the breakfast and that we didn’t get the proper fine dining experience, we put it down to being a one-off . I just feel it was a lot of money considering we ate in the brasserie and the ‘fine dining experience’ was not there, the food itself was delicious though, the Chateaubriand of beef was just amazing as was the jus! We wouldn’t have minded not being able to choose a starter, if it was hosted in the Beaufort dining room and we got the whole experience – we walked past and the room was empty!

The food hasn’t put us off returning and I will be booking again very soon, we have put it down to being a one-off. We got exactly what we wanted from the stay, a relaxing getaway in a countryside hotel.

We stayed here for our wedding anniversary in June 2013. Right from the start when our car was driven away to private parking to the rose petals and bottle of champagne in our room, the 5-star service was evident. We had a lovely room, near the pool and our own private terrace with gate so we could sit outside - and enjoy our champagne. We had dinner in the fine dining restaurant and felt the dishes were really creative and tasted amazing. We've been to a number of Michelin-starred restaurants and I would say the food is on a par with them, but felt the maitre d's attitude could have been improved. Our starters arrived cold (scallops) and when we were asked how our meal was, which wasn't until the end of the meal, we didn't even get a 'sorry' or the starter taken off the bill. We were just told that 'the kitchen service had changed around' which we didn't feel was good enough - and certainly, if they are going for a Michelin star, cold food/service like this won't cut it!
Apart from that (and another minor slip when we were brought canapés twice having our aperitifs), I would say this was a lovely trip. We felt very looked after and spoilt. Another nice touch was a bottle of still water left in our car when it was driven back to us, together with a note thanking us for our stay.
I think if they can just fix those small errors in the restaurant/bar service this place would be absolutely perfect.
Also, just a word to say the reception staff were terrific and really helpful when we arrived later than expected due to accidents on the motorway and they rescheduled my massage in the spa to the next day.

Room Tip: Try and get a room by the pool with a private terrace.

I stayed for the weekend at Ellenborough Park with my wife and was very impressed with the hotel. We ate in both restaurants, I preferred the Bistro due to the more informal atmosphere but both served good quality food which was well presented. The service was exceptional, our luxury room was pleasant if not a little small but had everything you would need such as wifi, Sky TV and a good sized bathroom etc. The heated outside pool and gym were excellent, my only criticism would be that the spa is a little small with only four loungers, tiny jacuzzi, steam room and sauna. Overall I would not hesitate in recommending Ellenborough Park.

We enjoyed a lovely weekend here last fall. Our room was beautiful. We stayed in the castle and had a huge suite with a large, comfortable bed. The bathroom was gorgeous. Our dinner was delicious, atmosphere exceptional. Breakfast was the best I've had anywhere! Would highly recommend this hotel for a weekend getaway.

All staff was attentive, friendly and helpful. The location is stunning with a view of Cheltenham Race course in the distance.
We arrived early but a big effort was made to get our room ready so that we could get changed. The reception area was too busy with a wedding party ready to leave. It may be an idea to try and manage that a bit more differently.
Our room was good size, clean and well equipped. (the WiFi speed could be better). Nice bed and bedding. Brilliant walk in shower with heated floor.
We needed help with some arrangements before we arrived; the concierge was very helpful and efficient.
Bar-Brasserie and Restaurant were both busy and buzzing the evening (a Saturday) we stayed.
We had dinner in the restaurant and it was just delicious. Very well presented and surprising tastes. Portions were small but that suited us on the night. We had had a nice lunch. I can imagine if you have dinner as your main meal, it would be a bit small.
Thanks for the tip from another Trip Advisor to book through IPrefer. Worth it!!
We liked it so much, we go back next week for a midweek break.
Definitely a place on the list for future reference.

Room Tip: Ask for a room in main house. We were in room 7.Great room. (shower only)

I stayed here this weekend with my boyfriend for our anniversary (we're mid 20s) and while it was definitely somewhere special to book, it was so overpriced for what it was. The room was really nice, but nothing different to every other 5 star hotel, no character and nothing worth writing home about. For the price, it was nothing special and you can go abroad for the cost of a room here!

But most importantly the food served in the whole hotel was below poor. I'm a real foodie and I like to go away and have one of the focal points be the food, whether it be good, traditional pub grub or small, well presented Michelin style dishes, I really don't mind- but it needs to be delicious. The food at Ellensborough was boring, unappealing and pretentious. The service was impeccible but it was a really horrible environment that my boyfriend and I both hated. The portions were tiny, the food was bland and while we had our hearts set on a 3 course meal, we couldn't even face having a dessert.

We instead had a dessert in the more informal brasserie- both again were bland, a pannacotta that could have been from a packet, and a pavlova that didn't taste handmade.

Then don't even get me started on the breakfast- how hard is it to get a fry up right? Instead it was another pretentious plate of boring, bland food.

Everything about the hotel is uninspired, and I would have much preferred it if we booked a small B&B in one of the lovely villages surrounding the hotel and stayed for 2 nights, rather than spend £250 on 1 night at ellensborough and over £250 on the food and bar tab.
