“great location and clean, well-designed room”
Reviewed August 21, 2011

Exactly what you want from a budget hotel - good price, quality and location. It's the same as all other Holiday Inn Expresses, which is fine by me.

You've got to pay for your parking with this one - but it is in the city centre! You can get it cheaper via reception - they'll explain how it works.

Good staff and design of room. Best thing is you are right in town so can walk wherever you need to. Would return.

As many others have mentioned, the hotel has a problem with cool air circulation in the guest rooms. We thought it would not be a problem because the outside temperature was not that hot (high 60s low 70s f) and there was a very nice breeze outside. However, there seems to be no relation between the outside temp and the guest room temp/air quality. Our room on the 5th floor was very hot and stuffy. the windows open only slightly and the unit in the room blows hot air.

Shortly after arrival we asked the front desk for a fan; a clerk went into a room in the back for about 5 min and returned to say all the fans were being used. Later that night we asked another clerk if she could rustle up a fan as we are priority club Gold and she said the hotel had NO fans. The next day around noon we asked if anyone had checked out and returned their fan and again were told the hotel had no fans. So I don't know for sure if the hotel has fans or not but...

Question #1: the hotel responds to complaints on this board so they know many guests are dissatisfied with the quality of the air in the rooms. Why can't they invest a few dollars a buy some fans for those guests who are uncomfortable?

Questions #2: the front desk told us the majority of complaints they get on the hot air problem in the guest rooms is from guests on the 5th floor. the 5th floor is their Priority Club Elite floor. Why don't they make the first floor where supposedly the air is cool -- into their Priority Club Elite Floor. Wouldn't it make sense to give PC Elite members the most comfortable rooms instead of the least comfortable rooms??

Or at least can't the hotel allow the windows to open more than a sliver and put a screen on the window so the bugs don't eat guests alive???

Otherwise it's an ok property. Well located if you want to be on that end of town. Good breakfast. Expensive internet and no free computer to check email in the lobby.

All hotels these days should offer free internet or at the VERY least have once computer downstairs to check email and make reservations for free.

I can't return or recommend this property because of the heat discomfort.

Room Tip: I was told lower floors have cooler rooms but i don't know that from first hand experience

It is with great regret that you experienced problems with your room comfort cooling system during your stay. Your feedback has been fully noted. Our comfort cooling facility is designed to maintain an ambiant confortable temperature in the room when fully operational, and we are continuously looking to improve this facility for our guests to ensure they have a comfortable stay.

I have stayed at the Holiday Inn Express in Cheltenham on several occasions and up to a week at a time. The rooms are clean and the staff is super friendly. The location is good, you are right opposite The Brewery with a good selection of restaurants. Breakfast is okay but nothing fancy.

We paid £35 for one nights stay. I think I’d have happily paid £50 and perhaps more.

The breakfast is a little bit of a free for all/bums rush. Saturday morning I think it says it opens at 07:30. We got there at 07:35 and it was full!! I really think they could do with opening earlier to give early birds (like me) a chance to get out quickly and therefore help with the volume of people at peak times.
Food was good though and worth the money, (coffee wasn’t up to my standards)
The location is really good and I cannot imagine that, even for £50~£80 we would have found a better hotel in the area.
When staying at this Holiday Inn Express you also get a voucher for 20% off various local (and some national) restaurants in the area. As we weren’t too fussy we thought we’d make use of this and ate at Slug and Lettuce.
Check in and Check out were simple and enjoyable. I cannot recommend this hotel high enough. Its fairly new so still a high quality interior. The shower is decent (but not a sand blaster!) and the rooms are far far bigger than some £100 hotels I have stayed in.

We had a great experience at the Holiday Inn Express in Cheltenham. Staff were really friendly and it's a great location from which to explore Cheltenham by foot. We arrived late with small children and the staff couldn't do enough to ensure we were settled in quickly, including making up extra beds really quickly. Hotel is clean and bright, the hot buffet breakfast was ideal for a young family and the bar/cafe area was comfortable and relaxing. We would definitely recommend it to others.

Me and my partner stayed in Cheltenham for one evening and the holiday inn was quite close to the town centre as well as being near the brewery which is home to lots of restaurants. The staff were very helpful and also advised that as we were guests we could take advantage of discounts at the brewery including 15% off at frankie + benny's and 20% off at Chiquitos, we did take enjoy a meal out due to this. The rooms were quite basic but included everything you needed, we were slightly disappointed as we had been given a twin room but had been expecting a double but other than this the rooms were fine. Car parking was a bit expensive as you are required to park at the ncp which costs £9.50 for an overnight stay. Breakfast was included in our rate of £55 but it was self service with not a great variety, I had scrammbled egg on toast but the eggs were a bit powdery tasting, however breakfast was fine for a quick snack. May stay here again but would possibly look at other options first.

The good: Cheltenham is a pleasant town, and the HI Express is a couple blocks from the high street with lots of restaurants and shops. The coach/bus station is a short walk away, and most of the floors are nonsmoking.
The bad: though clean, but rooms are basic with little storage space, and very expensive for what you get. Most of the customers seem to be businessmen who have their companies paying for the rooms. Most of the staff are non-native English speakers, and communication is a problem.
The ugly: there is no air conditioning. The staff tell you that the rooms have "coolers" which will cool the room to 20C, but they lie. All they have is blower which just moves the hot air around. Most of the year this is not a problem, but if you happen to be here during a hot spell, as we were, it is impossible to sleep. We tried opening a window, but they have no screens, and mosquitoes came in. The hotel has a business center, but the computer costs 3.75 pounds for 15 minutes which is the most expensive internet access I have seen. No one touched the computer while we were there.

Room Tip: Courtyard rooms are quieter

Dear Guest,

Thank you for taking the time to provide feedback about your stay. Your comments are very useful in ensuring we continue to improve our facilities and services to exceed our guest's expectations.

Our rates do fluctuate in line with the Cheltenham market demand, and remain very competitive as a town centre hotel. I am disappointed to hear you did not find this hotel value for money as we pride ourselves on a superior quality product with modern en-suite bedrooms fitted with everything you need when travelling. We also offer a 24 hour bar area, free hot breakfast, 25% discounts at local restaurants, free entry to a state of the art gym pool & spa, and we train our staff to provide exceptional service for our guests. Although we are a 3* hotel, our facilities & services are far superior to many of the other town centre hotels and we offer 4* amenities right on our doorstep with added-value discounts for everyone to enjoy.

We do not advertise air conditioning in guest bedrooms, however, your comments about our comfort cooling facility have been noted. Since your post, we have arranged for a full recalibration and service on the system which has since made a significant improvement ensuring temperatures are can be controlled down to 18 - 21 degrees during these warm periods so guests can enjoy a comfortable stay.

If I can assist with any queries on the above comments please do contact me driectly and I will be more than happy to assist personally.
