“Disappointing and over priced!”
Reviewed October 28, 2009

My husband and I stayed at the Swan as part of a wedding party with the reception being held at the hotel. The rate was organised for us at £165 for one of the smallest double rooms I've ever stayed in, with an unnecessarily large bathroom in which the taps didn't work properly! For a rather expensive hotel the room's decoration was substandard, totally mismatched with a wall light missing from one side of the bed. The sheets were good and the bed was comfortable but that could be said for a Travel Lodge!
We feel rather sad that a poor and over priced room, for us, completely over shadowed the event we attended for in the first place.

Great location, nice decor. That gets two points.
But the service is slow - 30 minute for one starter and a club sandwich.
And over priced. £2.25 ($4) for a cappucino smaller than the smallest starbucks.
And the capper....?
£2.55 ($4.50) just to pay by credit card.
So a total ot £25 - ($40) for two sandwiches and 2 tiny coffees.
That is pure, unadulterated scalping.
So.. my advice, sit outside, take a few pictures, and go somewhere else to stay, and to eat.

My partner and I have just spent the weekend at this hotel. I wanted to share my opinion of our stay as we spent hours looking for a hotel prior to booking and are left feeling rather disapointed.

I'll start with positives: We stayed in room 17 at the rear, the room was clean and tidy and a fairly good size. The bathroom has shower gel and shampoo as you'd expect.
The room was quiet and comfortable, but a little over looked.

The village of Bibury is very picturesque and plesant although there's not a great deal to do. We had a 6.5 mile walk courtesy of the hotel which was very nice and enjoyable.
Your a short drive from Cirencester, which has a fair amount to offer.

Now the disapointment: There is no country pub (cosy, warm, open fire, welcoming staff, comfortable seats) the bar/hotel lounge is a thoroughfair, the bar staff weren't particularly friendly, the drinks were expensive. The menu was small fussy and expensive clearly aimed at the many tourists that swarm the hotel and surrounding area.
Internet costs £6 for an hour and a half. We were charged £16 for something we had not ordered.

There is another pub in the village called the cathrine wheel but this isn't much better. We had pint each of cider and a cheese platter to share costing £14.00. Although the staff were plesant the layout isn't comfortable, cosy or inviting.

The hotel was nice (as expected for £114 per night) but we would not go back. We expected a nice country visit with walks, a local village pub to get merry in, eat good reasonably priced food and stumble back to the hotel feed and watered for a good nights sleep. This didn't happen as we had to drive to get what we wanted.

My husband and I along with his parents spent two nights at The Swan in Bibury. Although Bibury is a touristy town, it is touristy for good reason - it's absolutely beautiful. The hotel is charming - both of our party's rooms faced the garden and they were very comfortable and pretty. Ours had a large bathroom with tub - my in-law's room had no tub but a fabulous shower. We found a good rate by diligently searching the Swan's own web site.

The staff was helpful in providing my husband and I with written directions for a hike. We went about six miles round trip through public footpaths to a town called Coln St. Aldwyn's. It was probably the nicest walk I have ever been on - fabulous scenery and a nice pub for lunch in Coln St. Aldwyn's. This turned out to be a great plan - Bibury is lovely during the morning and evening, but apparently completely overrun with coaches and etc. during the day.

Really our only gripe was with the restaurant. The staff ranged from merely inexperience and incompetent to outright surly, with one exception: a young lady from South Africa, who was very professional. This was bad enough in the cafe part, but unexcusable in the fine dining restaurant where the three course menu is 35 pounds. (You can get 10 pounds off if you book half board with your room). I don't like capers, so I asked for a different sauce with my fish and the waitress wanted to know if I wanted one of the gravies! (everything else was a meat dish). When my father in law asked for a clean plate at breakfast, he was told to get it himself!

The food was not bad but not brilliant. You might think twice about eating there if you don't mind driving somewhere else.

We booked a room at the Swan as part of their winter promotion, very impressed, especially at such a reasonable price ( which included 1/2 a bottle of very drinkable champagne). We arrived to be greeted and shown to are room by a cheerful and efficent receptionist. On the way we noticed a room set up for a forthcoming marriage. I mentioned in passing that it was our 10th Wedding Anniversary the following day. Our room was beautiful with views over the river which runs through Bibury, the decor was contemporary but traditional with large wide screen TV. The bathroom was large with Molton Brown products. Beautiful location with some road noise during day but none at night. We had dinner in the elegant dining room, an Anniversary card had been placed on our table and the waiter brought us 2 glasses of champagne which we thought was a lovely touch. Our meal was lovely, as was breakfast and the staff very curtious.
The hotel was stylish and beautifully clean throughout. We only wished we could have stayed longer.

A lovely hotel, which despite being relatively close to a fairly busy road, has a tranquil and peaceful ambience. The staff were attentive, friendly and always happy to help with any request. The food was excellent, very good selection, locally produced and imaginatively presented. The decor in the hotel is a minor irritation - in some areas bordering on bad taste and not in keeping with the historic nature of the building. The vilage of Bibury is lovely - very picturesque and so far relatively unspoilt despite the high numbers of visitors. It's also a good location for touring the area - lots to see and do within 1 hour's drive. Our stay was a very pleasant experience and we will return.

We approached Bibury across country and were almost run off the road by an enormous lorry as we drove down a delightful county lane. I would advise arriving via Cirencester. Feeling a bit cross and hot under the collar when we reached the hotel any anti feelings were soon disipated by the warmth of the welcome and the lovely setting in which the hotel sits. We stayed in "Dragonfly", one of the larger rooms with a four poster bed - super room but the bathroom was something really special. A jackuzzi bath big enough for two, a proper shower in its own cubicle and two handbasins that were big enough to bath the kids!

The staff are helpful, efficient and friendly (also understanding when yours truly enjoyed a little more champagne than was sensible for an old geezer). The food is outstanding and, for the quality, very reasonably priced - 3 courses for £32.50 with a discount if you book in advance on the net.

Bibury itself is beautiful and this hotel is recommended for a romantic break. We intend to return before the weather turns in the autumn.
