Established 60 years ago, Le Talbooth has grown from a quiet tearoom into the award winning restaurant it is today.Fine dining at its best, in an enviable location beside The River Stour. Le Talbooth suits every occasion from intimate dinner for two to family celebrations or business functions. The 15th century building has three individual dining rooms. The River Room restaurant unfurls onto the impressive open air dining space which is covered by a striking architectural sail. This makes dining outside possible whatever the weather. The old Room, a smaller intimate room with inglenook fireplaces and rich decor and The Waevers Room on the first floor are ideal for private dining parties. Whichever you choose, Le Talbooth will ensure an unforgettable dining experience.

Went there on the 26th June for lunch. Sat outside by the river.
Been going to the Talbooth for almost 40 years and it has always been a favourite. On this occasion it was very embarrasing as our friend was treating us. Usual good service but food very mediocre. A crab starter was £12.50 for a miniscule portion. Two of us had guinea fowl which was very poorly presented with a thin sauce. My wife could have made a much better dish. We asked for an extra portion of vegetables which in fact was a bowl of cabbage!
The bill for three was £183 not included service. We left a tip as the staff as always were very. pleasant. Total bill for three was £201 including a not too expensive bottle of wine.
Frankly the food was not up to the usual Talbooth standard. A week ago my wife and I had lunch at a top London hotel where the food was much better and the bill proportionately less.

On the following day we went to Aldeburgh and had lunch at the the main hotel there. A very good comparable meal at half the price.

Sad really but I feel awful having to post such a critique but we will not be returning to the Talbooth. We expect to pay a little more for the surroundings etc but if the food is not much good what is the point.

My wife and I had an event to celebrate a couple of weekends ago, and she suggested the Talbooth. We were to visit on a Sunday evening. I assumed that it would be the usual indoor tables, superb food and exemplary service. Instead, it was an outdoor barbeque (albeit beneath the awnings on the riverside patio).

The food was well up to the usual Talbooth standard, though (obviously) a little different in that it was a serve-yourself buffet, with a whole roast pig, steaks, chicken and home-made sausages. As usual the vegetables were locally sourced and very fresh, and the salad selection was superb. The usual waiting staff were on hand and service was just as good as usual, though different, being outside.

The wine list is spectacular (as are some of the prices of the more specialist tipples!), but the basic South American Malbec went really well with the roasted meats.

There was a limited choice of desserts, but this didn't really matter - the starters and the main course more than made up for any limitations in that department.

To finish off the experience, there was a Steel Band playing at one end of the terrace, which certainly added to the atmosphere. As it got dark, the staff lit the patio heaters which serve a dual purpose of warming the area beneath the awnings, and keeping the flying insects at bay!

All in all, a thoroughly enjoyable experience. Apparently, the Steel Band play on alternate weekends - a Jazz Band play on the other Sundays. One piece of advice - if you're after intimate conversation, insist on a table at the end of the patio as far from the band as possible!

Service is very good, all silver service. The staff are very friendly and attentive. Food was amazing. There wasn't a time limit on our table either which made it even more enjoyable.

We previously visited two years ago when we found Le Talbooth very good indeed. We were not disappointed this time either. Again a group of six on a sunny June lunchtime, so able to dine outside in the perfect riverbank setting. Everyone very happy with their choice of food, especially me as, on account of allergies / food intolerances, I needed to vary the composition of my choice. This was done very willingly, without previous notice, and to a very high standard (others often fall down on any or all of these three). Needless to say the food, service and ambience were all excellent. Would recommend highly.
