“Excellent service”
Reviewed January 23, 2013

A family stay at the Holiday Inn Express was booked to attend a funeral. From the moment we arrived the staff were friendly and professional and all staff throughout could not have been more helpful. Reception and bar staff made us feel very welcome and offered friendly help and service, even asking if we wanted anything more from the breafast buffet before closing up. A relaxed stay was just what we needed. Thank you to all. This hotel is very much recommended and this is what we have found at other Holiday Inn and Holiday Inn Express hotels too.

I stayed at the holiday inn January 2013 for four nights - I found the room was large and very comfortable as was the bed in which I slept soundly, the bathroom had a lovely big roomy shower and the towels were changed daily. The hotel was clean and staff were friendly and helpful. However, I did have to ask for more tea, coffee and milk for my room on the third evening as they were not refilled during my stay. The food was quite expensive for what it was, the menu did not vary and seemed to run out of supplies regularly. Breakfast also never varied, and consisted of a continental style breakfast, tinned fruit (Grapefruit and Mandarins) and an 'English' breakfast of sausages, scrambled egg and beans, although on one morning there were no sausages and it took a while before the there were more and the beans and scrambled eggs which were running low were refilled...not good when most of the guests were waiting to get off to work for the day. There was little noise from the A12 that runs by the hotel, and the parking was good. There never seemed to be many staff on duty at any one time and in the evenings they appeared rushed as they manned the reception, bar, brought out guests meals and cleared tables. Having said that overall the hotel suited my needs at that time, and I would stay there again.

Room Tip: The rooms at the back of the hotel do not get a signal for mobile phones but on the front of the hot...

Thank you for your review regarding your experience during your recent stay. I greatly appreciate you taking the time to do so.

I am glad to hear you found the hotel comfortable and had a sound sleep. I apologise that your room was not re stocked with tea and coffee, this should be the case and I will let our housekeeping manager aware of this.

Our Breakfast is Brand Standard consisting of continental breakfast with 3 hot options, of course our guests should not be kept waiting for a long period of time while items are replenished. Items that have run out should have a display on them to advise our guests they are cooking and on the way. We will look further into this and find out what exactly happened with missing items etc during your stay.

We appreciate your comments regarding the menu never changing and we have put this to our chef, who has taken your comments on board and will be changing menus more frequently.

It is our goal to consistently provide superior service and accommodations and your comments are very important to us. The feedback we receive from our valued guests, like you, enables us to target problem areas and take the necessary actions to ensure similar situations can be avoided in the future. We appreciate the candid feedback we receive and welcome any opportunity to improve.

Once again, we appreciate you taking the time to share your comments with us.

Yours sincerely,

Having stayed at this hotel before I thought I would give it the guest treatment of looking into every nook and cranny. The hotel is just out side colchester and next to the busy A12 London to Ipswich dual carriage way. The was no noise from the road and the room was quite close to the road. Guest noise was non exisistant even though we (the Wife and I) stayed over the new year. Breakfast is buffet style and was freshly cooked. You have a choice of Continental or English or both if inclined, There are coffee makings in the room which was comfortable although the bed was very soft and felt like a water bed, I preferred a firmer matteress. Evening meals are provided and are adequate. Bar prices are on a par with the local pubs prices. If you use a sat nav bedware that at the end of the journey it will tell you to "turn left and you have reached your destination" this is WRONG, Turn right head for the A12 and at the end of the road take the slip road to the filling station and look left and the Hotel is on your left. Overall I found that the staff are attentive and customer orientated with out being obtrusive. Would I stay again yes. One thing to note is that there is free WiFi in the lounge but it is not free in the room.

We stayed here at the beginning of December. Our room was clean and spacious. The bathroom beautiful with a huge shower. The breakfast were great the only bug bear I had was the water stains on the cutlery. The hotel was clean and the staff very friendly and welcoming. Plenty of parking. Handy for Colchester only a short drive to the town. I had expected to get road noise from the A12 but there was none. We were visiting family and friends as we do every year. We will be back.

Room Tip: We had room 42 very quiet.

The room was clean and comfortable. Lovely bathroom with spacious shower.

Three people (2 adults, 1 child) booked into room, and sofa bed was made up on arrival, however had to ask for extra pillow for sofa bed. Also only 2 towels available. Even after room was serviced for second night stay, still only 2 towels!

The room was surprisingly quiet, as was concerned due to hotels close proximity to busy A12.

Breakfast was poor, bread for toast not fully defrosted. Sausage, beans and egg where tepid. Also hotel seemed to struggle with amount of diners with everything running out, including cutlery. Even though in my opinion it was not that busy.
Also, the orange juice, which is obviously made from concentrate was under diluted and was rather sharp to say the least!!

I am assuming that due to holiday season it was skeleton staff and people filling in to other people's jobs, so it may not be a fair representation of the hotels normal standards so would give it another try!

One of the worst experiences of a hotel I have ever exxperienced. Despite the comfortable rooms and the overall cleanliness of the hotel, the experience was severely marred by several factors.

Point 1, the "Chef" seems capable only of cooking frozen £4 pizzas (which sell for £10), an assortment of bland curries (comparable to Tesco ready meals), and a distinctly sub par cheeseburger. Hardly suitable fayre when the nearest restaurant is over 4 miles away.

Point 2. Wifi is available only in the lobby/dining area. Room internet is restricted to wired £7 per night minimum iBahn internet (long reknowned as one of the biggest ripoffs in short term internet access).

Point 3. Despite having 4 bars of signal whilst sat in the car directly outside my window and 2 bars of signal in the corridor, upon entering my room, all mobile signals were completely cut off. Thus forcing guests to either sit in the lobby (where amazingly I got a full 3G signal), or paying for the afore mentione iBahn ripoff.

Point 4. Upon contacting reception (less than an hour after checking in) and asking for a room on the top floor, or the other side of the hotel so as to hopefully get a better (i.e. SOME) mobile phone signal, I was informed gruffly by the young man on the other end that "All the rooms are the same, there are no towers nearby".

Whilst most of the staff were quite friendly, the facilities (or lack thereof) and the blatant attempts to cash in on what appears to be room specific 3G deadspots made this a very poor experience compared to other HIE sites. The only postive point of this Hotel are it's easy access and the 24 hour garage virtually on-site.

I would not pay to stay in this hotel again if they offered rooms at £25 a night with a free meal.

Room Tip: There are no good rooms according to the staff, every one appears to be lined with lead if the young...

Dear Vernon D

Thank you for taking the time to write your review on trip advisor and I do apologise for any inconvenience caused to you during your stay with us.

As a Brand Standard of the Holiday Inn Express group it is our policy to offer light-bites snack / bar meal items. The Express style hotels normally do not offer any dinner options, although as there are no food outlets within the near vicinity we applied for a waiver so we could offer our guests a dining option within the hotel. We appologise if this wasn’t to your customer satisfaction.

With regards to your numerous points regarding your mobile phone reception, Dedham itself is known as a low signal area and we have in fact paid a large sum of money to have boosters placed within the hotel to allow us a better mobile reception for our valued guests to achieve stronger 2G signal.

We have a long term contract in place with regards to our hard wired in-room Ibhan internet connections and unfortunately this does incur a cost of £7.99 per night. Due to guests suggestions regarding this we thought we would provide free Wi-Fi in our Great Room to give our guests the option of using this for free when required.

We took advantage of the Holiday Inn Express 21-day cheap rate, so got a real bargain on the room. Paying less than £40 I wasn't entirely sure what to expect, but was pleasantly surprised by the facilities available. There are plenty of parking spaces and the front entrance of the hotel is very clean and well-presented. The room itself was also lovely and very clean. The bathroom was particularly fresh and well-presented - I really liked the addition of the blue lighting. The breakfast, also included in the room rate, had a good selection - scrambled egg, beans and sausage, warm pastries, toast, fruit, cereal and fruit juice - and there was plenty of space to sit and enjoy. Again, the room was clean and kept tidy, with staff ensuring that tables were cleaned and guests had all they needed. Although some may argue that more could be offered, I feel that as the breakfast was included in the such reasonable room rate that the selection was fine - I have been to other hotels that charge upwards of £8 for breakfast and the Holiday Inn Express' offered nearly as much for no charge! In terms of facilities around the hotel, there aren't any, but we used it as a base to visit the zoo and it was perfect - about 20 minutes in the car straight there. The free wi-fi has yet to roll into the rooms, but having read previous reviews I was already aware of this. When this is done, I think the Holiday Inn Express will be faultless. I will be recommending to friends if they need somewhere to stay in Colchester.

Dear Claire W,

We here at the Holiday Inn Express Colchester want to thank you for taking the time to write such a nice review on our hotel.

It is really rewarding when our guests can feel our passion about the hotel. The staff really do pride themselves on their customer service, guest satisfaction and cleanliness of the hotel. So when a valued guest such as yourself recognises this it really gives us a sense of satisfaction and drive to continue and grow going forward..

We are locked into a long contract that we are trying to negotiate with regards to the free Wi-Fi in our rooms and as soon as we can do that unfortunately we can’t budge on it, but we are trying!

We really hope to welcome you back to the hotel soon.

Yours sincerely,
