The Landgate Bistro is at the top of historic Rye and is a quite small but light and pleasant restaurant. The food is British based on local produce and is very accomplished indeed. We both started with the local foraged wild mushrooms served on a slide of fried puffball. For main I had the local rabbit which was really excellent although the vegetarian main was fairly routine. Great Raspberry Mille-Feuille for desert and a very good cheese selection. Good wine list - we had an excellent Alsace wine. Their own bread was also very good.

The service was friendly although a little bit erratic.

Overall really enjoyed the experience and Rye is lucky to have a place like this

The landgate bistro offers both excellent food and precise and friendly service. All three courses were very much enjoyed, especially the pea and mint soup. I would highly recommend the landgate and look forward to coming back!

We had dinner at the Landgate Bistro almost 20 years ago and were anxious to return with our friends from the US. Service was a bit spotty this time due to a full house and only one waiter but we weren't in a big hurry and enjoyed the relaxed atmosphere and his pleasant demeanor. The food was very good, and as others have noted, the homemade sour dough and focaccia are both to die for. I could have eaten the entire basket (but didn't!).
Fresh picked mushrooms on toast was a hit as a starter and my husband loved the pork belly and others enjoyed the cod, sole and lamb dishes. We shared some of the lovely local cheeses and a delicious creme brûlée. We were so happy to return!

Bistro's been going for 30 years (only 2 chefs during that time) so it's nice to welcome returning customers. You'd thought we'd be better at predicting numbers of customers but we're not: we were unexpectedly busy hence the understaffing. Sorry about that, but glad you loved the food.

Lovely restaurant. Excellent food and wine. Very friendly staff. And not too expensive. Would definitely recommend a visit.

Cheers for that. Good food at reasonable prices: it's what we're trying to do.

Situated close to Rye’s medieval gateway, Landgate Bistro welcomes you with a magnificent setting - the dining space is understated with tables gathered around an ancient fireplace. The menu offers a wide variety of mouth-watering starters. I had the griddled scallops with parsnip crisps and pomegranate, while my wife tried the creamy mushrooms (picked that afternoon) served on sourdough bread. They were exquisite. The main course consisted of a three-ways pork with Savoy cabbage & potato cake and lemon sole fillets served with crispy kale and crushed new potatoes, which really thrilled us. It all was followed by a delicious cheese board served with chutney and biscuits. All the products were fresh and the dishes had the warmth of home-made food. Martin, the chef-owner takes great care in selecting the best quality ingredients. There are plenty of wines to choose from around the world with prices to suit all wallets. Plus, nothing beats freshly baked focaccia bread. Really attentive and friendly service too. Having said that, we loved the restaurant overall and will definitely go back at our next visit to Rye.
