Please note that the property may not be suitable for elderly or infirm guests, due to the wooden staircases, a small step from the reception area into the kitchen and access to the shower, which is over a large, deep bath. Seakale is dog-friendly and up to two dogs are very welcome to stay for an additional fee of £30. The cottage has been decorated in muted off-whites and blues, in keeping with its coastal setting, together with quirky vintage finds. Textured cushions and throws will ensure you feel comfortable and snug. On cooler nights, simply throw a few logs in the woodburner for that cosy cottage feel.  White-washed floors and plantation shutters add to the 'beach house' feel, together with far-reaching views of the nature reserve, river and sea. On the ground floor is a cosy living area with a wood-burning stove and Smart TV. Adjoining this is a spacious dining area comfortably seating up to 6 adults, with french doors that lead out to the garden. Open to the dining area is a well-equipped kitchen stocked with all the kitchen essentials. The kitchen is a very efficient space with all the appliances you would expect, including a good-sized fridge/freezer, electric oven, gas hob, full-size dishwasher, microwave, toaster, kettle, and a Nespresso machine. On the first floor is the master bedroom with a king-sized bed, double wardrobe and a chest of drawers. There is a family-sized bathroom with marble-topped twin sinks, and a spacious bath with an overhead shower, perfect for blasting off sand after a long day on the beach. There is also a laundry cupboard housing a washing machine. An ironing board and iron are also available. On the top floor are two twin bedrooms, one with a blackout blind, making it ideal for young children. Both bedrooms have a chest of drawers and hanging pegs/space. The staircase is fitted with a retractable stairgate at the top of the stairs. To the rear of the cottage is a long, enclosed private garden that is child/dog-friendly, with an outside tap and hosepipe, handy for washing off sandy feet/paws, and a washing line for the drying of clothes/beach towels. There is outdoor furniture seating up to 6 adults and a Weber charcoal BBQ. Attached to Seakale is a lockable barn providing plenty of storage for bikes or sporting equipment, such as a windsurfer. There is a host of beach paraphernalia that you are welcome to borrow. FOR THE 'LITTLE PEOPLE' We have tried to think of everything to make a stay with little ones as easy and child-friendly as possible. You will find 2 travel cots, 2 stairgates (one fixed at top of 2nd staircase), bed rail, plug-in night lights (one on the landing and one in each twin bedroom), highchair, booster seat, plastic cups, plates & cutlery, fireguard, toddler step, toilet training seat, potty, and anti-slip bath mats, perfect for weekend visits when you want to travel light. PLEASE NOTE: The staircases at Seakale are wooden and we are unable to fit a stair gate at the top of the first staircase due to the design of the staircase. There is a fixed stairgate at the top of the 2nd staircase and a pressure-fitting gate fixed at the ground floor level. PARKING There is a small space for parking for 1 medium, or 2 small cars, in front of the attached barn, with plenty of additional free parking on the nearby village street. PLEASE NOTE: The access road starts off as a tarmac road and leads into a short section of unmade, shingle road, before reaching Seakale. The cottage can be accessed by driving very slowly through this section, especially during wet weather, when there can be surface water. This might not be suitable for very low vehicles.

Lovely Cottage in sleepy village
This is a very cute cottage which is bigger inside than it looks. There are 3 good size bedrooms, although be aware the stairs are steep. The bathroom is huge with a lovely deep bath and 2 sinks. Downstairs the kitchen and living area can comfortably accommodate 4-6 people and the kitchen itself is well equipped. All rooms appeared to have been recently decorated and the whole place was immaculate. Outside there is a table and bench but it might be worth bringing some camping chairs if you want something more comfortable to sit on outside. The owner did advise that the access to the cottage is up a narrow track and this was ok for a small car but might be a struggle for a bigger one. There is a free carpark nearby though. There isn't a lot in Rye Harbour itself as only a basic shop but there is a very good pub that has a varied menu and the marshes leading to the sea behind the cottage are great for walks and bird watching. The owner even had a plan for when we managed to lock ourselves out one day and the welcome apple juice drink and crisps were a nice touch. Overall a lovely place to stay away from the hussle and bustle in a sleepy little village. Would definitely recommend as close to lots of nice coastline and stunning gardens. There is a bus into Rye itself if you don't have a car but it only runs in the daytime.

Thank you for your lovely review. I'm so glad you had a great stay. The cottage was built in 1880 when stair treads were not quite as deep as today's modern standards, but they are not dangerously steep. You can also fit any size car outside the cottage and the housekeeping company regularly park their van there. There is a table set, consisting of two benches and two chairs in the garden. However, we are not technically allowed to have garden furniture, which is the reason I don't supply garden chairs. The gardens were sold to the properties on the proviso that they were kept as natural as possible, so we have placed the table set close to the property. The village shop has recently undergone new ownership and is now incredibly well-stocked with all you could need. There is also the Discovery Centre on the nearby nature reserve, which has a great cafe overlooking the nature reserve and sea and is a great spot for morning coffee and croissants! Best wishes, Jane

No Trams to Lime Street
A Christmas rental - and a mystery to solve. Where are the trams and where did they go ? Jane's story was that the trams ran along 'Tram Road' and the ticket office was the house across the street. But careful investigation shows that the passenger tram line that ran to Camber Sands on the opposite side of the river ? The tram that ran along 'Tram Road' was horse drawn, pulling concrete blocks to the quayside for lighterage down the coast to the pier at Dover ? No tickets and no 'ticket office' required ? We did find some sea kale on the reserve and had a very small portion with our Christmas dinner. A lovely cottage and the family all liked it !

Thanks for your great review.....a mystery indeed! The house opposite Seakale is called 'Dover Cottage' and I've been told by its owner that it was the original 'ticket office'. So not sure how to solve this mysterious mystery haha. Glad you had a great Christmas! Best wishes, Jane

Perfect seaside cottage
We had such a lovely stay at Seakale - my husband and I, our 2 year old daughter, and my parents. There are a lot of very thoughtful touches throughout for children - including stairgates, travel cots, plastic tableware, highchair, nightlights, and an amazing black out blind in one of the 2nd floor bedrooms which allowed us a lie in every morning. Also appreciated things like the good toiletries included and the Nespresso machine. The cottage is clean, nicely decorated with a very nautical theme, and was bigger than we expected - the master bedroom and living space downstairs are both spacious and the bathroom has double sinks and a huge bathtub. The garden is sunny and quiet, perfect for drinks or a bbq in the evening and our daughter enjoyed running up and down the little hill at the bottom and collecting stones in her beach bucket. Rye Harbour is very peaceful and we enjoyed coastal walks, and drinks at the William the Conqueror pub a 5 min walk away (although disappointed it closes at 8pm!) Rye itself is beautiful with its cobbled streets, church, castle, and interesting shops - we had nice meals at the Mermaid Inn and the Globe Inn Marsh (a bit further out of town), and great fish and chips from Marino's. Camber Sands is a 15 min drive away with a huge expanse of soft sand, sand dunes and shallow water, which was ideal for our 2 year old - she had the best time and it felt like we were abroad in the sunshine. Jane, the owner of Seakale, is very approachable, friendly and helpful. A really lovely little break and I would not hesitate in recommending this cottage and location to anyone.

Lovely holiday cottage
Had a great stay at Seakale and would definitely recommend it for a family holiday. The beds are all very comfortable with good quality bedding. Good sized dining table and seating for 6. Everything you need is provided including all the kitchen essentials which means you don’t have to worry about the boring things! The cake and milk were very welcome and I particularly liked the plentiful wooden coat hangers! The decor is lovely. We stayed during a very warm Bank Holiday week which meant we were able to take advantage of the many outdoor activities locally, including bike hire. We loved our evening walks along the Nature Reserve and there are some nice places to eat locally which are dog friendly. Jane was very helpful and the locals friendly. Only downside was the track leading to the cottage which was uneven to say the least. We would definitely recommend and return.

Just the thing
We booked Sea Kale for a half term break for two adults, two teenagers a dog and visiting parent and second dog. plus as it turns out an extra teenager for a night. Everyone had plenty of space and the open plan layout downstairs encouraged sociability and it was easy to get everyone round the table - something often missing from cottages but which we like as we don’t often eat out. The bathroom was lovely and felt a real treat - warm and spacious with two basins handy with five of us at times. The kitchen was sunny (😁) and big enough and well equipped for one person be in to do main meals - I even managed a quiche having made the pastry and then been relieved to find a rolling pin. Beds were comfy and linen smooth and storage good in the double room. I didn’t really clock what was in the bigger twin room but the smaller room would require tidiness and good organisation if for example you had two people with own cases for a few days. However if it was children then having stuff in the first floor bedroom is the obvious answer. Throughout the home the styling was practical (eg well placed hooks) as well as neat. It made us feel we were somewhere loved and cared for. The garden was nice space to have and contained for small children (we had none)and well behaved dogs (one visited). It wasn’t really the time of year to sit out though. A motivated large dog could leap over the fence and our Lakeland terrorist was supervised as if she had spotted a cat or other temptation she would have been up it like a ladder 🙄 but then she is an escape artist. We loved the location near the reserve.

Thank you so much for your review. I'm so glad that the cottage managed to suit your needs, especially as you were all of various ages and stages, with dogs as well! It is certainly a well cared for and much loved cottage, with the aim of providing a real 'home from home' for guests. Re the storage, if there were 6 friends staying, then there is enough space in the larger twin room, which is adjoining the smaller room, to share some luggage space. Best wishes! J

Relaxing stay
Very nice cottage in relaxing Rye Harbour. Ideal for dogs - we went for a walk to the beach each day and there was hardly anyone on the beach. All the pubs and cafes in Rye Harbour accepted dogs which was great. The cottage was very clean, bed linen lovely and furnishings very nice. Jane had thought of everything - fresh milk and lovely cake for us on arrival. Hot water on demand and lovely big bathroom. The garden was great and a sun trap. By day two I felt relaxed as it was so quiet and peaceful.

Our third visit!! Excellent as always.
This was our third visit and once again we have had an amazing time. The cottage is so lovely and comfortable. It has all essential commodities and is very clean. We love Rye and Rye Harbour is incredibly charming so the location of the property is perfect for us. There is a little pub just 5 minutes walk away where we like to go for a drink in the evening plus you can do some great walks from the property. We will certainly return again!!

What a treat!
What a treat! Well maintained and comfortable. It had everything there that you would want on a weekend break. On arrival there was a cake which was a lovely touch. This delightful cottage is just a few minutes walk from the nature reserve and has a couple of pubs close by and some cafes for food, so no one had to cook. Definitely a place to return to and recommend to friends.

About the neighborhood
RYE HARBOUR VILLAGE Rye Harbour is a working harbour, located close to the estuary of the River Rother, with an active fishing fleet. It's not a picture-postcard village designed for tourists, but a friendly community of fishermen, artisans and labourers, in which many generations have lived all their lives. The village consists of a mixture of weather-boarded properties, period cottages and tumble-down seaside dwellings, surrounded by a marshy, mystical landscape full of pools and lagoons. Tram Road is an unmade shingle track with a hotchpotch of new and ramshackle properties, giving a distinctly bohemian feel to the area. Seakale is nestled at the far end on a separate grassy track, with its own attached barn on one side and an identical cottage on the other. It is incredibly peaceful and quite often the only sound you will hear is the cries of the gulls. RYE HARBOUR NATURE RESERVE Just a stone's throw from Seakale Cottage is the 800 acre Rye Harbour Nature Reserve, with paths endlessly criss-crossing in the directions of Rye, Camber Castle, Winchelsea and the uncrowded beach, which has no seasonal dog restrictions. It's ideal for those wanting to escape the crowds at nearby Camber. Here you will find outstandingly beautiful landscapes whatever the season, with pools and lagoons and wide-open skies. It's a haven for bird watchers, artists, dog walkers, ramblers and cyclists alike. In September, there are the spectacular signs of bird migration, when thousands of Swallows and Martins assemble before flying south, sometimes tens of thousands in one day! It's the perfect place to relax and unwind from the hustle and bustle of everyday life and offers a varied programme of activities throughout the year, many of which are ideal and interesting for children. The village is well served by a village store, two pubs (one waterfront) and two cafes, one of which has 5* reviews and displays the works of local artists, so well worth a visit. There is a dinghy and yachting centre and a lifeboat station. The village has was built 200 years ago on an extension of the shingle beaches. A Martello Tower dating back to the Napoleonic War stands close to Seakale's garden where the original shoreline once stood. The Watch House was built in 1825 to assist the blockade detachments in their attempts to halt the smuggling trade. The church of the Holy Spirit has a thought-provoking memorial to all those who lost their lives in the Mary Stanford Lifeboat Disaster in 1928. These coastal flatlands make an ideal base for a relaxing holiday with dogs. There are literally miles of flat, dog-friendly footpaths, where dogs can roam off-lead for hours. The Romney Marshes provide an endless variety of walks as well as a choice of uncrowded beaches, where they will enjoy racing across the vast expanses of shingle and sand at low tide. WINCHELSEA Adjoining Rye Harbour beach is Winchelsea beach. At low tide there are plenty of rock pools to keep the little ones amused, ideal for crabbing, shrimping and fishing for flat fish. There is free parking along the beach road. There is also a wonderful walk running alongside the Military Canal, amongst fields of sheep. Winchelsea Village is very pretty with the 1066 Country Walk running through it. Visit the farm shop which has a butcher/gourmet deli and coffee shop all under one roof. RYE Perched high on a hill, above the marshlands that spread out to the sea, is the medieval Cinque Port town of Rye. Famed for its attractive cobbled streets full of antique and quirky shops and a popular array of eateries, there is something for everyone here. Children (and grown-up children!) will enjoy the old-fashioned sweet shops selling nostalgic sweets by the jar. Climb up the church tower and enjoy the far-reaching views. Enjoy a traditional fish and chip lunch, an indulgent cream tea, a first-class gastronomical dinner, or stop at one of the many exceptional deli and farm shops that sell quality local produce (Rye Bay scallops, Romney Marsh lamb, local cheeses, etc), perfect for an impromptu picnic on the beach. Both Rye and Hastings have active fishing fleets so you can enjoy freshly caught fish for supper. CAMBER SANDS Only a short drive from Rye is the glorious Camber Sands, an award-winning 7-mile stretch of flat sand, backed by magnificent dunes, popular with a whole range of watersports. FESTIVALS & EVENTS 2014 The Rye area hosts a number of increasingly popular festivals, including the Rye Bay Scallop Festival, 15-23 February, which has firmly put Rye Bay scallops on the culinary map. The whole area is a magnet for artists and each year, Rye takes part in the South East Open Studios' event, where you can view the works of local artists in their own homes and studios. This year's event will be from the 6-22 June. The 21-25 August sees one of the finest Jazz festivals running over 4 days and 5 nights. The Rye Arts Festival will be from the 13-28 September and includes a whole host of literary, theatrical and music performances, as well as other special events, including themed walks and special activities for children. In November each year, the Rye Bonfire Society hosts 'Rye Bonfire', which is a spectacular firework event, drawing in large crowds to what is described as 'perhaps the best in the South East'R>
