“We only had a drink here .”
Reviewed January 8, 2012

We only stopped here for a drink . However we met and got chatting to a local man that gave us some information and stories about the place and its history . We had a look around and found the Mermaid had lots of character and we felt we would of liked to of stayed here , even though it supposedly haunted !

“Amazing Bar!”
Reviewed May 18, 2011

We did not stay or eat in the restaurant of the Mermaid as both were too expensive (restaurant is very expensive even compared to London prices!) but as a lover of old and beautiful pubs we had too lovely evenings having a drink in the Mermaid bar and beautiful sitting rooms that are open to non residents. The staff we so incredibly helpful and told us about the history of the Mermaid which I find fascinating. Such a wonderful place to have a drink after dinner (or before!). Highly recommended.

“Atmospheric 850 year old smugglers' inn.”
Reviewed March 30, 2011

Stumbled upon this lovely old inn by chance after walking up the old cobbled street. Went in for a quick evening drink, and whilst it is quite expensive (the barman said it keeps out the riff raff), we enjoyed it tremendously. As you would expect from a place that originated from 1156, it has enormous charm and the owners have done well in maintainig the character of it. A tourists' delight!

“Look But Do Not Stay”
Reviewed January 26, 2009

I have been visiting this hotel since the mid 1960's, its a fantastic building with a lot of local history and great architectural details...but stop outside, or just walk through the front door and out the back door.
We went for a drink in the Firplace Bar, a fantastic feature, but it smokes and when you leave you smell like an old bonfire!
The drinks are overpriced, no local beers, the service is unhelpfull and almost rude, they are ver good at ignoring you. The bar is filled by a few European visitors veiwing the expensive snacks and a group of locals, who receive good service, but make you feel unwelcome. The general furnishings are unconfortable and un-imaginative. Although I have never stayed there, I have eaten there on a few occasions, it's only just OK.
Its a shame the management appear to have lost interest.....have a look at the place and then go and eat at The Ferry in Stone in Oxney
