“Excellent food and service”
Reviewed February 27, 2013

I ate here on a quiet February mid-week night but even though there was only one other couple in I did not feel uncomfortable as the lovely dining room has a relaxing ambience and the waiter Alex, was very friendly. I ordered the pheasant with a gorgeous tomato, ginger and fenugreek sauce. The presentation was exquisite and the dish was served with a light and crispy naan bread, spiced tian of vegetables and mango chutney. The complimentary welcome drink, pre-starter of a mushroom pakora and then after that a spiced lentil amuse bouche with another aubergine pakora were delicious. A lovely touch. Based on the price of a main (£10-17) I think that is excellent value for money, for such high quality food and even though I was alone and only ordered a main I was made to feel very welcome and the usual chore of eating out alone when away on business, was a pleasure!

“Balancing Atmosphere and Speed of Service”
Reviewed February 25, 2013

We booked online for a Monday night when the restaurant was in the process of not opening on Monday nights. The net effect was that the place wasn't very busy, and as the restaurant is located mainly in the two front rooms of a grand Georgian building on Rye's main street, then atmosphere and 'buzz' were always going to be the main problems. Compensating for all that, and aided by a roaring fire, the food, service and great value make The Ambrette well worth a visit. The food is delicious and ambitious, and represents a great leap forward from standard tandoori fare, but this type of menu does need time to get dishes out of the kitchen. So the balancing act for The Ambrette is always going to be being busy enough to create the right ambiance, and slick enough to cope with pressure on the kitchen. A tricky equation to get right.

“Wonderful experience”
Reviewed February 22, 2013

We visited Rye for my wife's birthday, staying at the White Vine House. The Ambreet is in the same building, so was the perfect spot. As my wife is gluten intolerant, it is normally a fuss to discover the 1 or 2 dishes she can have. Not here, virtually everything on the menu was fine for her to eat. They gave us a welcoming drink, and amuse bouche, along with palate cleanser, around some really great food. A great selection of wine at reasonable prices didn't hurt.
This can easily become our favourite local restaurant as we live in Ashford!

“More than your average curry house”
Reviewed February 21, 2013 via mobile

Wow!! What a restaurant!! Our first visit and it definitely won't be our last. Greeted with a complementary amuse bouche and welcome drink the food just kept getting better. The wife had the feather steak starter, which was lovely, but nothing on the chefs special lamb starter that I had...it was amazing! The started were followed up with a soup course, again it was complementary.

The standard of the food for the mains was just as high, pork for me and a lamb special for the wife, again both we're fantastic, washed down with the orange and popping candy sorbet. Desserts were just as good.

The staff were brilliant, very attentive and very helpful, we both can not wait to return!!

“Yes, it is very good indeed”
Reviewed February 21, 2013 via mobile

We've just been to The Ambrette for the third time and it really is very good indeed. Our first visit was a year ago and we were just blown away with the quality, the unique flavours, the service and the whole experience. Pius it was outstandingly good value for money. We've since been for lunch and that was equally as good but even better value.

In comparison, dinner last Friday was slightly disappointing in that the menu is more restricted, the prices have risen and the service was enthusiastic but inexperienced and sporadic. Putting this into context though, The Ambrette is still better than any other comparable restaurant I can think of. Certainly better than any of the numerous tourist traps in Rye (see my review of Lemon Grass for example).

The Ambrette is a deserved success and long may it continue.

We've booked to go back with friends next Friday (what greater recommendation is there?) and I'm really looking forward to it.
