My husband and I stayed for one night we wish it had been more. We found the staff all very happy and helpful, food very good, rooms decorated very well, in all a very pleasant stay. this was a travel zoo deal. Which made it very reasonably priced

Room Tip: There was not a swimming pool or fitness centre but I could not delete the rating on these two thing...

The George Hotel in Rye is a privately owned Boutique hotel, recently refurbished. We went there for a two day break. Our room was excellent. The design and comfort were well thought out and little touches like heart shaped lavender pillows and hot water bottles (not likely to be needed as we were nice and warm) wearing the same material as the décor. There were also umbrellas in the wardrobe should they be required. The restaurant food was good and well-priced although the wine was a little hiked up, there was plenty of choice. Rye is a beautiful old medieval town with interesting shops and steeped in history. The location of the George is central but let down by the fact that there is no parking so don’t take too much luggage, as it’s a steep climb from the nearest car park. Most of the staff were exceptional but I have two negatives one and my pet hate, my husband’s plate was cleared whilst I was still eating on two occasions and the other, the bar staff. There were two barmen one who was welcoming and chatty and did his best to rustle up an Irish coffee for my husband and bring it through to the lounge even though he was working on his own. The other had no personality at all and really looked like he didn’t want to be there. He delivered service without a smile and made everything seem an effort, shame he let the team down. Would we go back? Yes for the comfort, location and service we received from the rest of the staff.

Room Tip: If you want peace and quiet ask for one of the rooms off the courtyard we had 43. There was a weddin...

My wife and I recently returned from a Sunday night stay at the George, we had a lovely time. The staff had good customer service skills and were hepful and friendly. We arrived in Rye on a Sunday morning and had Sunday lunch at a nearby pub, The Old Bell, billed as Rye's oldest pub - chicken or pork, roast spuds, cabbage, swede, stuffing, yorkshire pud and gravy, very nice and only £8.50. Dinner at the George was also very good, oysters and salt and pepper squid to start and steaks perfectly cooked for main course. The Queen room was a little on the small side, but it was fine, the tea and coffee facilities included good quality tea and ground coffee with a cafetiere. Delicious breakfast with cereals, poached pears, full English, freshly squeezed orange juice etc. There is no parking at the hotel, but the Cattle Market Car Park is only a short walk away and only £1.50 for 24 hours. I'm amazed at some of the previous negative reviews; a rowdy wedding party who were asked to pay for damage caused, creaky floorboards in a centuries old hotel and being woken by seagulls in a fishing town! We had a geat time.

We recently visited the George for a family weekend, having been regular visitors to the hotel in the past. We stayed in the modern extension at the back, and the accommodation was fine, apart from one unfortunate problem in that when we returned for an afternoon nap on the first day we found that the bedding smelled, and so we had to call reception to send housekeeping down to change the sheets and duvet. However the pillow cases werent changed and so we spent the night smelling a rather unforuntunate musty smell.

This was not the main problem though, which occurred when we went to have dinner in the evening which we booked in advance. We were seated in the bar, and were told that on Fridays and Saturdays the bar is "classified" as part of the restaurant, which is an excercize in fantasy management in itself. This was problematic for us because of the noise in the bar and of constant movement of people going to the loo and outside to smoke. We waited for a table in the restaurant itself but eventually as one did not become available we had to settle for staying in the bar. Becauseof the time this took some of the dishes we wanted were no longer available. The Maitre D abandoned assisting us to a rather flustered waitress. Our family meal which was a special occassion for us was spoiled although we made the best of it. But firstly when the table booking was taken we should have been informed that our table would not be in the restaurant proper but in the bar, then we could have had the opportunity to make an informed decision - the assumption that customers will be equally happy to sit in a public bar rather than a restaurant is a false one.

It seemed to me this time that the bar and waiting staff (not the reception staff) are cheap local casual staff and although well meaning are not trained to a 4* standard of either presentation or service.

We complained to the manager on leaving, having spent probably about £1500 at the hotel over the weekend as a family. He was absolutely hopeless in dealing with our complaint, wasting an hour of our time discussing the matter but refusing to acknowledge the problems we had suffered other than with platitudes. All we asked at the time was a £50 refund on our bill as a nominal recognition of the problems we had encountered, which the manager refused (although he cheap skatedly eventually offered us a £50 voucher to spend in the hotel (a different thing altogether) after an hour of argument when we were leaving the hotel and would not use it). What should have been issues easy to resolve left us with a very bad taste in the mouth.

We have been regular visitors to the George in the past and so we were disappointed on this occassion, as it seems to us that the expansion of the accommodation and refurbishment has lead to a concentration on volume rather than quality and that the hotel is now being poorly managed. I hope that the owners manage to do something to raise the standards back to where they used to be when it was a 4 star boutique hotel - it isnt at the moment.

My wife and I have just enjoyed a short stay at The George in Rye, to celebrate our wedding anniversary.
It was brilliant - difficult to fault. The staff were friendly and accommodating and the rooms were finished to a very high standard with high quality furnishings, a large flat panel TV and a massive - supremely comfortable - bed. Our bedroom was across the small courtyard from the main building and had a small outside seating area with table and two chairs - perfect for a quiet drink on a warm evening.
Everything about the hotel was done to a high standard without being in any way flashy. The bathroom had both a marble-topped bath and one of the larger showers I have seen in a hotel. It could not have been better - it was such a joy to stay there after suffering other hotels which made promises they simply could not keep.
We would not hesitate to spoil ourselves by staying there again. It is a triumph of understated quality.

Room Tip: The rooms across the courtyard from the main building seem to be the newer, more luxurious ones.

Thoroughly recommend the George in Rye. It was our first visit to the lovely little town. The rooms are tastefully decorated in a nice contemporary yet cosy style. Attention to detail is high. The staff are most attentive, polite and charming. The George is perfect for a romantic break.
Breakfast was fabulous, I had boiled eggs and soldiers and pink grapefruit, it was a perfect breakfast.
We will definitely be going back.

Truly lovely hotel. Tardis like exterior, you would never imagine the number of rooms and space there is behind the facade. And super stylish. Lucky enough to be in Room 1 - stunning ground floor suite off the courtyard. Amazing interiors, sumptuous bathroom and biggest bed ever. Perfect romantic hideaway. Good food and attentive service. Scallops highly recommended and the lamb. Really lovely spot for a night away. Breakfast service was quite busy so try and get there early!

Room Tip: Room 1 - ground floor suite. Awesome! :)
