“A hidden gem”
Reviewed February 17, 2013

Once you discover this hidden gem you will keep returning. The food is fresh, delicious and rustic. A changing (short) menu means that the best ingredients are used, hence a treat for the tastebuds.

Lots of different cakes including a nice range of gluten free fayre. Great for a morning or afternoon cuppa and a slice of cake.

Indoors, outdoors or in the cosy basement - you choose where you'd like to sit and enjoy!

My first visit was over a year ago when the cafe hosted an afternoon tea with Edd Kimber (The Boy Who Bakes - winner of the first Great British Bake Off) and I've returned regularly since including this morning for The Big Bite-Size Breakfast. Four playlets performed by a theatrical group; croissants, tea or coffee, fresh strawberry and a disc of dark and white chocolate - what's not to like?

“Delicious food, prepared and served by lovely people.”
Reviewed February 7, 2013

We had a wonderful lunch here today (our first visit). A delicious bowlful of soup, with the most fantastic salad on the side - comfort food at its best. Sadly it left no room for cake,of which there were several - they all looked gorgeous. The short menu (4 options) changes and is freshly prepared every day. Claire and her team were without exception warm and friendly, which makes all the difference. Lovely decor too. We shall return often.

“A gem tucked away but well worth seeking out”
Reviewed January 24, 2013

I've been to the Buttercup cafe a couple of times now and the food and service is really good. The food is freshly cooked and very appealing to the eye and the tummy! We have a lot of cafes in Lewes and no shortage of places to get a good coffee but the ambiance of this cafe far excedes the others (yes, even Bill's) and I would highly recommend that anyone in Lewes takes the walk down to South Street and give it a try.

Reviewed November 7, 2012

Love eating here it's a fantastic little restaurant and now they have opened up a large seating area in the basement it's not so little any more. Pretty seating area outside, fantastic home cooked food, happy and helpful staff. Great place to eat I highly recommend.

“Fab”
Reviewed October 24, 2012

This quirky cafe is fun, cool, fab & a lovely change to the norm. If you want 5 star service then go elsewhere...the service matches the cafe...its relaxed and doesnt take itself over seriously!
With limited space/covers then I think the menu, the service & the pricing all work very well together...a lot of effort and thought has been made & it all makes for a very chilled experience.....get in the mood and enjoy!
Well done to the great little team here.
