Combe Haven Holiday Park - Haven
Reviewed May 28, 2012

This was a surprise holiday for my children booked a 7 night stay in may everything was superb except for the beds in the caravan which need new mattresses that would be only gripe. The park its self is very clean and well presented the pool is very good and the outdoor pool is good when open which was only towards the end but imagine will be more now its warmer. The Mash and Barrel is a nice place to have a family meal with a nice 25% off if u eat before 5 mon-sat.
i highly recommended smuggles cave and the 1066 castle using the west hill lift some good shopping in hastings and eastbourne. However our family holiday would not have been complete without the Zoo Troop and Funstars especially Funstar Karl who captured my childrens attention whenever he was working with his fun, entertaining personality and magic tricks which im still trying to figure out how he does them . we are now planing a return visit later this year.

Arrived here on Monday , pleasantly suprised by the caravans.I agree with some of the other reviews that the caravans are too close together, too many packed in.
As we have have arrived on a week when good weather was forecast ,I can't understand why with some forward planning that they could have opened up the outdoor pool for people to use and take the pressure of the indoor pool. Take note Haven...
We watched an act on the evening in the live lounge and found the chairs to be very sticky and dirty And the floors seemed dirty and sticky .
We ate in the mash and barrel and found the food fairly reasonable and if you eat before 5pm you get25% off your bill, very friendly staff also.
Burger king is inside but expect to pay a little more than you usually would, that's if it even opens, one day it was closed and no explanation .
Also can't understand why they don't have digital tv , surely an essential in the 21st century.
Also a table and some chairs would be nice so you could sit outside the caravan ,seeing as you can't sunbathe round the closed outdoor pool.

We use various Haven sites for little breaks a few times a year and decided to book a 4 night stay in this park which we got for a very good price on their official website. This is the second time I've been to Combe Haven and it was good to see it had been improved and revamped since our last visit in 2008.
The site is very hilly and not particularly picturesque, especially in comparison with some of the other Haven sites we have stayed at. The caravans are all huddled close together and very few caravans have car parking spaces next to them, so it's a bit of a hassle having to lug your bits up and down the hills all the time!
We chose a superior standard caravan and for the first time in 4 years, we had to make a complaint and ask to be moved. The first caravan absolutely reeked of cigarette smoke and dogs, and we found a lovely little pile of half-eaten doggy chews in the bedroom which had obviously been overlooked by the cleaners. The last straw was finding green and black mould growing on almost all of the curtains in every room- we had guests staying with us and it was so embarrassing!
The lady in reception was very nice and listened to our complaint and did immediately offer us a new caravan, this one was far cleaner but we found green mould growing along all sides of the shower cubicle- we were too exhausted to complain again!
The site has a small arcade and a few places to get things to eat and drink, a little adventure playground and is only a few minutes drive from Hastings main beach and attractions.
We really enjoyed our stay in the end and found a couple of the staff to be amazingly friendly and helpful- its just a shame that the cleanliness standards in the caravans are definitely lacking. We will definitely be back but will bring a bucket of cleaning products with us!

Booked 7 nights for a our first family holiday for us and our 2 daughters (4.5 yrs and 10 months).
Glad we booked a deluxe plus caravan which meant we were located in a quieter more private location which also allowed us to park next to the caravan, however this was unfortunately right at the bottom of the steep hill which meant a struggle pushing the pushchair up to the shop, pool, play areas etc.
The caravan was modern, fresh clean linen was supplied and the caravan reasonably clean (we did have to complain about a used nappy left under the caravan and used plasters found stuffed in between the sofa cushions) and some of the bedding was covered in sand. Other points noticed during the week were the fact the side door had a noticeable gap at the bottom of the door (up to 5-8mm which seemed to get wider as the week went on) which meant there was a draft especially when the temperature dropped, the bathroom radiator leaked (odd green fluid which we think was antifreeze) and ants which seemed to be everywhere - the service desk said we should have reported them so housekeeping could hoover them up for us, however they were never in serious numbers and no sooner had we disposed of them more returned to take there place so house services would be useless and a more permanent solution would be better.
The heating was reasonable but if you used the fire it rendered the central heating useless as the thermostat was in the same room.
Non-stick pans were supplied but no non-stick utensils so the pans were very scratched.
We tended to spend our days off site as our plan was always to explore East Sussex/Kent, but did make use of the early morning (8-8.30am) 'Water Confidence' swim session for the girls which was nice but would have been better if the hadn't ordered us out of the pool at precisely 8.30am, I understand this was due to the fact a bookable swimming lesson was at 8.30am but considering this was unattended on 4 out of the 5 days we used the pool they could have allowed us a slightly longer session. There are a number of 'free' sessions but these filled up quickly and weren't suitable for the younger children. The price of the passes for additional paid sessions seemed excessive £36 -72!!
The outside adventure playground is good but really only suitable for 4yrs+ and could have done with more for the younger children. There is an indoor softplay area for under 5's but limited for my older child and it seemed a shame not to be outside when it was dry. We went to 2 of the LIVE lounge Zoo Troop shows which kept my girls entertained but as they didn't start until 6.30pm (their usual bedtime) my husband had to leave early with our youngest as she became fractious (she wasn't the only one but most other parents chose to ignore their cries) so an earlier (just after teatime) show would maybe be better. One thing the annoyed and disappointed me was the cost of things on site (the usual jacked up prices for a 'captured' audience) and I was horrified to pay over £5 for a coke and a shandy, plus the constant push to buy Haven merchandise... £5 for a photo with the characters, £7 for a cardboard frame with the characters on it! The shop was okay but again I stuck to basics as prices seemed on the high price (used the Tesco at Bexhill for everything else). Also to get to the LIVE lounge you had to walk through the arcade and was shocked to see a number of unsupervised children running around and using the machines (Law states: Children under 18 can go into arcades but cannot play on machines giving more than £5 payout or a stake of more than 10p." which most machines seemed to be however there didn't seem to be much 'policing' around the higher paying machines), plus children under 8 should be with an adult.
As there isn't a babysitting service we had to be in the caravan in the evening and were surprised to find the tv could only be tuned to BBC 1 - 4, CBBC & CBeebies...no explanation why (we would have brought our freeview box if we had known) and even though there was a DVD incorporated into the TV it was unusable (No CI module) - Only Platinum caravans had working ones!
In summary it made do as a base for our visit to the area but would have been disappointing/extensive IF we had to stay on site. We may consider using Haven again elsewhere but only for the kids sake and the fact they have a pool otherwise would use B&B or self catering cottage etc.

We are a retired couple in our early sixties, who enjoy the freedom to come and go as we please, and not have the constraints of meal times forced upon us.
I can't comment on the kids' stuff, but what I saw looked fine, lots splashing around in the pool and a good itinerary for them each day. Lots in the arcade trying their hand at winning a few pence.

Caravan and Price - We stayed Monday to Friday, 14th to 18th May 2012, the idea being to use the caravan as a base to explore the surrounding area. We paid £208.80 (this includes a £5 per night extra charge for a 2012 model caravan), which was a Prestige, situated in the very new Seaview Village part of the site. Accommodation was ultra modern, with a very contemporary themed decor, three bedrooms all with crisp white linen bedding, brilliant shower room and two toilets. Everything was bright, sparkly, clean and new. Only terrestrial TV programmes on the flat screen telly, but this was a bonus for me as my husband didn't have the zapper super glued to his mitt! The down side was there is a very busy main road nearby and the traffic noise was quite bad.

Mash and Barrel - This provides pub grub akin to a Brewer's Fayre, not overpriced, but I did think drinks were a bit expensive i.e. large glass of wine £4.65, a pint of guinness and half a lager £5.30, however, a bottle of wine was £8.95.

Spar shop - Very well stocked, prices reasonable, a bottle of Gallo wine here was £4.99, a bargain.

We have just got back from here and 1st off il start with the negatives- the outside pool and slide was shut all week which disappointed the kids big time, even tho 1 life guard said they would see on a daily basis as a favour lol and when we went swimming asked another if there was any chance he said it had only just been tested and waiting for results to come back oh did i fail to mention that the 1st one was actually outside with all the other life guards doing training which consisted of yep you guessed it going up and down the slide! There is only 1place where u can sit down and eat and our caravan was so far away from everything it was such a mission for the kids to get anywhere, the entertainment was crap and the 2 'club houses' are missions apart! The activities are not advertised very well (we had onlyto go ask main rec on a daily basis for them) but other than that the caravan was very nice, warm and clean, the food was nice and nothing was overly priced :) the kids loved the arcade and enjoyed the activities (which we had to pay for seperately) overall experiance was ok :)

We visited the Coombe Haven holiday park in Hastings for the easter weekend.
We upgraded our caravan, to the deluxe plus, to give us extra space and heating in the bedrooms. Space yes, but the heating was pointless. We were so cold, to the point where we slept in jeans and jumpers and huddled together to keep warm.
The bed itself was very unwelcoming and uncomfortable, with what seemed to be a plastic sheet under the main sheet, not helping with the cold!
The childrens beds were the size you'd expect but our daughters quilt cover was mouldy.
Even with all this we were the lucky ones, the other 2 families we were staying with had much smaller caravans with no extra heating.
Before our holiday we read that there were special easter events happpening, we even made the children easter bonnets before we went. We were therefore disappointed to find that nothing specific appeared to happen at all.
We therefore spent our days away from the site. Hastings itself was a surprise... and not a good one. It was really run down. Not a place we'll ever visit again.
There was evening entertainment after the bingo. The usual haven kids entertainment keeps the younger ones amused while the older children loved the arcade.
The problem was when the haven characters said goodbye, the next round of entertainment became so loud and unbearable that we had to leave. It was still aimed at children but consisted of a man shouting down a microphone with the speakers up far too loud. Our children were scared and the adults had headaches! We never stayed long enough to hear the cabaret, so instead chose to finish our evenings back at the caravan.
All in all a disappointing holiday from Haven, where I would expect better.
