It gets very warm in there during the winter but the open fire is fabulous - I wouldn't change a thing! ...and their chips with shredded pork are to die for!

Our son took us and our dog here yesterday. Wonderful. The waitress was lovely and brought our dog biscuits and water. Amazing log fire, fab beers and amazing menu. Best pub we have ever been in. Perfect.

Attended with friends for an evening meal in the dining room having booked in advance. Nice enough food, nice enough service. We had heard good things from local friends and family and our evening was pleasant.

We were staying just down the road, at The Laindons B&B, where the owner recommended the First In Last Out as a good place to get a drink and a bite to eat. She wasn't wrong. We came here twice over the weekend - once for a bite to eat before the Battle of Hastings re-enactment, and then the next day for a Sunday roast and to read the papers. Both times were excellent, in terms of food, drink, atmosphere and the friendliness of the welcome. I had a ham sandwich the size of a telephone directory, and the beer (brewed especially for the pub I think) was delicious and very reasonably priced. The centrepiece of the pub is a giant brazier, surrounded, when we were there, by a dozen snoozing dogs. This is one of the things that gave it such character. I'd definitely recommend it.
