We ate a Bankers on 22nd July. Being a Monday evening, it was fairly quiet (about 8 tables occupied) in the restaurant although the take-away was doing a brisk business. We were seated immediately and given menus. Drinks order taken shortly thereafter. We chose the restaurant primarily that being in Brighton we wanted fish and chips. So we all ordered standard medium sized cod and chips. The portions are generous, freshly cooled and very tasty. No complaints. served with tartar sauce and curry sauce for chips if you so wish. Other condiments available on request (my wife wanted mayonnaise) The waiting staff were also attentive and helpful. Possible slightly off the beaten track but well worth the effort. Fish and chips about £10 but look for 2 for one specials on the website

We visited Brighton on what was one of the hottest Sundays of an already sweltering summer.

The night before, I popped ‘Best fish and chips in Brighton’ into Google, and out came the pecking order, with Bardsley’s generally top, and Bankers close behind.

Not being a betting man, I opted for Bardsley’s.

Not being too attentive, I didn’t notice – until we rolled up at their front door – that Bardsley’s are closed on Sundays, and Mondays. A bit of a downer all the same.

Well, as they (don’t) say in the fishing world, every cod has a silver belly.

That’s because we ended up at Bankers instead.

Situated in Western Road, a block or so from the seafront (a lot closer than Bardsley’s), it occupies quite an imposing building for a fish and chip establishment. Takeaways at one end, with the rest eat-in. Décor is dark-wooded, but modern, fresh and clean.

On the walls, you’ll see some fascinating photographs of Victorian Brighton, bathing machines, long-dressed ladies, and all.

More importantly, on your plate, you'll enjoy exemplary food for this kind of restaurant. We started with the fresh fish platter to share, which although featuring fairly standard fayre, mainly tuna and prawns, was a tasty counterpoint to the fish and chips which followed. The latter dish definitely fell into the quality bracket, with thin, delicate batter, clean and abundant cod below it, and dry thick-cut chips (soggy fans won’t approve). Unusually, you can opt to have your fish prepared in breadcrumbs rather than batter, or poached.

Service definitely deserves a mention. My son was feeling a bit peaky when we arrived – a waitress noticed and brought him a glass of water. Our waitress was quick, efficient and always polite. Waitresses who weren’t serving our table, still took time to come and ask if all was good.

Which it was.

So we’ll be back to Bankers.

Sorry Bardsley’s.

Very popular restaurant with plenty of tables. I had the scampi and chips and my husband a huge haddock and chips with very crispy delicious batter. The portions are huge but you can share one plate of chips which would be fine for two people. The wine was very cheap and all in all a great meal at a very reasonable price.

I visited Brighton yesterday and decided that for lunch I would take my girlfriend for a slap up fish n chip lunch. I reviewed the area for the best fish n chip place around and the same one kept coming up. Bankers.

All I can say is the people if Brighton don't know what good fish n chips are because this place us the worst fish n chips I've ever had. First off we had a prawn cocktail to start which was nice but uses frozen prawns why I have no idea? However the bread that accompanies the dish was literally plastered with thick horrid margarine. YUK!!

Then I asked what the house wine was ie was it a chardenay etc. no I was told it has no name? For some reason no one knew what grape variety it was just the name in the bottle which was something like Cricket wine??

I then ordered the fish n chips and when it came up you could clearly see the chips were old and tired soft and chewy not fresh hot crispy chips. I called over the waitress who said " yes I was going to get you some fresh ones as I noticed those weren't fresh"

So my question is why did you bother to bring over the food when it clearly wasn't fresh why not send it back yourself instead of waiting for the customer to notice? Il tell you why because most people wouldn't bother to complain they would just eat this rubbish and pay up. Well we didn't pay for either of our mains.

So people don't go to bankers because they serve really really bad fish n chips choose wisely and maybe next time in the area il know where to go. It's just a shame those people who's reviews said otherwise didn't do likewise.

Thankyou for your comments about your recent trip to Bankers Restaurant.
We have investigated the points that you raised with the staff and the Manager at Bankers, and would like to reassure you that we take all customer feedback very seriously.
As an establishment we would always recommend that if customers are disatisfied in any way that they bring this to the attention of the staff immediately in order for them to offer a replacement dish, as opposed to at the end of the meal, when we would not have the opportunity to address the issue.
With regards to the 'House Wine' our menu describes these choices as 'a dry crisp white, a medium dry and a soft fruity red'. If a customer has a particular preference we have a full range of alternatives available.
We are obviously disappointed that you feel that we did not live up to your expectations - as you are aware we have earned an excellent reputation in Brighton, and work hard to maintain this.
We thank you for taking the time to write this review, and apologise for any inconvenience caused on this ocassion.
