Description: A Brighton institution in the heart of the famous Lanes, Gars has been serving Chinese food with attitude for nearly 30 years. This family-run restaurant is smart, sophisticated and streamlined, with polished bamboo flooring and modern silk shades. It’s set over three floors, with a private function room and bar downstairs (with the possibility of karaoke if the mood takes you), a ground-floor section with red-leather panelling and soft lighting, and the first-floor dining rooms. The food is a clever mix of classic and modern Chinese, alongside other Asian favourites like Thai green curry and salmon teriyaki. Start with tender beef carpaccio served with sesame and chilli dressing, then dither between fresh scallops in black bean sauce, lamb shanks with ginger and spring onions or the sensationally savoury Cantonese roast duck.

“Always consistently good”

Busy Friday evening and the standard is always good. Service is swift but not too pushy and the food is of a good standard too. Probably a little expensive but the food will not disappoint here.

“Lovely Chinese!!!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 25, 2014

We actually ate here a few weeks ago and I forgot to write a review, and I was so impressed with the restuarant I thought I better write one!!! We chose Gars as we were going to the Theatre so were looking for somewhere who offered an early service, after seeing a chinese buffet restaurant and looking at reviews on TA we realised that we were limited and thought we would give Gars a try, so glad we did!!! The staff were very friendly and helpful, and even though they were booked they found us a table (had to leave by 7.30 but was great as we were in there at 6.00) in a cosy booth, very romantic!! we chose the Emperor buffet set menu and it was exquisite! beautifully cooked tempera prawns, scallops and the duck was lovely! then main course was lamb shank and chicken. It was absolutely delicious, not greasy or too much food - just perfect!! we decided it was the best Chinese that we have had and will definitely be back!! Thank you Gars you made our evening :)

“Third visit, consistently very good”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 18, 2014

We have eaten three times here recently and have received great food and consistently good service on each occasion.
We have tried few different main courses - all have been superb - but we both keep sticking to the same starters as they are so good - soft shelled crab and the squid!
Good location, very clean and tidy restaurant and professional but friendly staff.

“Pretty ordinary”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 11, 2014

Like many residents of Brighton I have been to Gars several times and keep hoping that it will justify its reputation as one of the town's most legendary restaurants. This time we were the guest of a good friend on the Saturday after Chinese New Year. The upstairs room is extremely pleasant and the staff friendly although the service was all over the place. Our starter of spiced chicken liver was good but hardly Chinese, I chose a seafood dish from the daily special menu, four prawns, some sliced squid plus a few vegetables all very under seasoned and no noticeable Chinese flavour for £16.50, not exactly good value. Our desert of 'homemade' ice cream was fine. Once again I found this restaurant to be just about OK, not particularly Chinese and quite expensive.

“Rubbish for Veggies”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 7, 2014

We went there last Saturday night. I ordered a veggie starter and veggie main course and it arrived mixed-in with a squid dish that someone else on the table had ordered. After eating some of the squid (which can't be pleasant for anyone let alone a veggie!) we complained. The waitress didn't apologise or think that anything was wrong with mixing veggie and non-veggie - it makes you wonder what happens in the kitchen! She did give me the dish on a separate plate, but the rest of the meal was un-appetising, and quite frankly I couldn't wait to leave!
