Dining options: Late Night, Breakfast
Description: We like to think we serve pretty great coffee & some amazing homemade cakes. We are vegan & vegetarian-friendly and everything is made fresh on site. We are fans of people who bring their dogs, but also provide a dedicated laptop room upstairs to those wanting to do a little work. There's also a fully licensed bar serving until late if you want something a little boozy.

“None Better”

Marwood Coffee is a delightful experience. Quirky and distressed interior - a sun trap out the back - and unconditional antipodean love from the staff!

Coffee is absolutely superb - amongst the best this side of Auckland and Melbourne!

An outstanding cafe.

“Not what we expected but great fun”
Reviewed February 1, 2013

A friend told us to try the Marwood Coffee shop if we wanted something different - it didn't disappoint! The eclectic interior made us chuckle, especially as we looked at all the old toys decorating the walls/ceiling etc.

The coffee and food were great, better than the chains although prices were comparable (this isn't a bad thing). Service was quick and friendly. I agree with a previous review - the cups are on the smaller size, but the coffee inside them was good.

If you want a change from the boring Costa/Starbucks template, Marwood offers something very different in its look, feel and overall atmosphere.

“Quirky with a real Brighton vibe”
Reviewed January 11, 2013

Good coffee (but small cups) and nice snacks in one of the quirkiest places around. I think it could be lifted by slightly more competitive pricing but love the fact this place exists and offers an alternative to the well known chains. Check out the stuff hanging from the ceiling!

“Eclectic, fun coffeeshop in the heart of the Lanes.”
Reviewed January 6, 2013

I lived in Brighton for a year and came to love Marwood. Let me start by saying that I'm an occasional coffee drinker so I probably can't critique coffee too strictly.

[pros]
-The interior is great - all kinds of random things all over the walls (dolls, movie memorabilia - basically anything you might find in your attic) and tables made with all kinds of random things (like doors).
-Definitely an eclectic vibe.
-Staff is friendly. You order and they bring it to you.
-There's 2 floors so that was nice, but it did get really crowded and sometimes even that was full.
-Coffee was good (not outstanding though), with nice coffee art that made it more interesting.
-There are also little desserts and tea as well.
-Right in the heart of the South Lanes - one of my favorite areas in Brighton.
-There's a back area too with random furniture that's great for sunny days.

[cons]
-Quite loud, but that's the vibe they go for I guess. Definitely not a good place for studying.
-Gets crowded!

Overall, it's a fun place to go to. I'd recommend it!

“Quirky arthouse coffee shop in the Lanes.”
Reviewed January 3, 2013

Marwood is tucked into a corner of the Lanes almost obsucred by a branch of Fat Face, and is one of the more interesting of Brighton's independent coffee shops. The decor is shambolic, battered, surreal and rock 'n' roll, giving the interior the atmosphere of a slightly weird clubhouse.

The staff are hipsterish and cheeky so if you're expecting conventional 'polite' customer service you might be taken aback by their attitude, but I personally find their cheekiness refreshing and an honest reflection of the personality of the place, which is a kind of laid back anarchism.

I don't drink coffee so can't comment on whether the signage's boast of 'Kick*rse coffee' is accurate but they do deliver the 'life changing cake' as promised- their brownies are particularly good and they've had some other delicious (and rather generously proportioned) cakes available in the past. The rest of the food menu is pretty basic but tasty and cheap nevertheless.

If you're looking to spend a few hours in a cafe soaking up the atmosphere, this is the place in Brighton to do it.
